Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Zachary Packard Jul 2015

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Zachary Packard

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can occur after witnessing or experiencing a terrifying event (Mayo Clinic, 2015). PTSD can manifest in a variety of symptoms including, nightmares, flashbacks, insomnia, irritability, and anger (Mayo Clinic, 2015). The extended combat engagement in Afghanistan and Iraq have caused many casualties for American service members, both physically and mentally. The Veterans Affairs (VA) stated that 476,515 people sought treatment for PTSD in 2011 alone (Veteran Affairs, 2014). The veterans returning home from combat require adequate services to support their transition to civilian life. Barriers may exist for those members with PTSD symptoms seeking treatment. The …

Differences In Health-Related Behaviors And Attitudes Between Urban, Rural, And Isolated Households In Western West Virginia, Michael Newsome Phd, Tim Hazelett, Monika Sawhney Phd, Msw Jul 2015

Differences In Health-Related Behaviors And Attitudes Between Urban, Rural, And Isolated Households In Western West Virginia, Michael Newsome Phd, Tim Hazelett, Monika Sawhney Phd, Msw

Economics Faculty Research

This study uses data from a 2013 survey of 275 randomly sampled households across nine counties in western West Virginia to examine the significant differences between the health behaviors and attitudes of rural and isolated populations. The results show that age, education, and income are significant factors in explaining differences in health-related behaviors and attitudes for all urban, rural and isolated respondents. However, after controlling for socio-demographic differences, isolation is found to have only a few significant effects, and some of the effects run counter to stereotypes of isolated populations. Rural respondents are significantly more likely than isolated respondents to …

Hand Use Predicts The Structure Of Representations In Sensorimotor Cortex., Naveed Ejaz, Masashi Hamada, Jörn Diedrichsen Jul 2015

Hand Use Predicts The Structure Of Representations In Sensorimotor Cortex., Naveed Ejaz, Masashi Hamada, Jörn Diedrichsen

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

Fine finger movements are controlled by the population activity of neurons in the hand area of primary motor cortex. Experiments using microstimulation and single-neuron electrophysiology suggest that this area represents coordinated multi-joint, rather than single-finger movements. However, the principle by which these representations are organized remains unclear. We analyzed activity patterns during individuated finger movements using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Although the spatial layout of finger-specific activity patterns was variable across participants, the relative similarity between any pair of activity patterns was well preserved. This invariant organization was better explained by the correlation structure of everyday hand movements than …

Changes In Visual And Sensory-Motor Resting-State Functional Connectivity Support Motor Learning By Observing., Heather R Mcgregor, Paul L Gribble Jul 2015

Changes In Visual And Sensory-Motor Resting-State Functional Connectivity Support Motor Learning By Observing., Heather R Mcgregor, Paul L Gribble

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

Motor learning occurs not only through direct first-hand experience but also through observation (Mattar AA, Gribble PL. Neuron 46: 153-160, 2005). When observing the actions of others, we activate many of the same brain regions involved in performing those actions ourselves (Malfait N, Valyear KF, Culham JC, Anton JL, Brown LE, Gribble PL. J Cogn Neurosci 22: 1493-1503, 2010). Links between neural systems for vision and action have been reported in neurophysiological (Strafella AP, Paus T. Neuroreport 11: 2289-2292, 2000; Watkins KE, Strafella AP, Paus T. Neuropsychologia 41: 989-994, 2003), brain imaging (Buccino G, Binkofski F, Fink GR, Fadiga L, …

Levels Of 8-Oxodg Predict Hepatobiliary Pathology In Opisthorchis Viverrini Endemic Settings In Thailand., Prasert Saichua, Anna Yakovleva, Christine Kamamia, Amar R. Jariwala, Paul J. Brindley, Jeffrey M. Bethony, + 8 More

Microbiology, Immunology, and Tropical Medicine Faculty Publications

Opisthorchis viverrini is distinct among helminth infections as it drives a chronic inflammatory response in the intrahepatic bile duct that progresses from advanced periductal fibrosis (APF) to cholangiocarcinoma (CCA). Extensive research shows that oxidative stress (OS) plays a critical role in the transition from chronic O. viverrini infection to CCA. OS also results in the excision of a modified DNA lesion (8-oxodG) into urine, the levels of which can be detected by immunoassay. Herein, we measured concentrations of urine 8-oxodG by immunoassay from the following four groups in the Khon Kaen Cancer Cohort study: (1) O. viverrini negative individuals, (2) …

Embracing Multiple Definitions Of Learning, Andrew B. Barron, Eileen A. Hebets, Thomas A. Cleland, Courtney L. Fitzpatrick, Mark E. Hauber, Jeffrey R. Stevens Jul 2015

Embracing Multiple Definitions Of Learning, Andrew B. Barron, Eileen A. Hebets, Thomas A. Cleland, Courtney L. Fitzpatrick, Mark E. Hauber, Jeffrey R. Stevens

Eileen Hebets Publications

Definitions of learning vary widely across disciplines, driven largely by different approaches used to assess its occurrence. These definitions can be better reconciled with each other if each is recognized as coherent with a common conceptualization of learning, while appreciating the practical utility of different learning definitions in different contexts.

Learning is a major focus of research in psychology, neuro- science, behavioral ecology, evolutionary theory, and computer science, as well as in many other disciplines. Despite its conceptual prevalence, definitions of learning differ enormously both within and between these disciplines, and new definitions continue to be proposed [1]. Ongoing disputes …

Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy, Angela J. Occidental Jul 2015

Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy, Angela J. Occidental

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is a rare, reversible form of cardiomyopathy. First cases of takotsubo cardiomyopathy were described in Japan, twenty years ago (Milinis, & Fisher, 2012). takotsubo cardiomyopathy is a transient left ventricular dysfunction, typically triggered by severe emotional or physical distress. Left ventricular ballooning is characteristic of Takotsubo syndrome. Images of this ballooning resemble a takotsubo vessel used in Japan for collecting octopus, thus the reason for the syndrome name (Pelliccia, et. al, 2014). In recent years, this cardiomyopathy has been described as “Broken heart syndrome” because severe emotional stress has been implicated as the cause of this cardiomyopathy in …

Investigating Duchenne’S Muscular Dystrophy, Ashley Beaujon

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

Young boys usually present with disordered or delayed motor development, muscle weakness, and possible speech delays in early childhood (Ruiten et al, 2014). The first symptoms almost always show up prior to the age of six years. Parents may notice their young child with DMD having a hard time standing up, walking, or climbing stairs, and many will eventually need a wheelchair to get around (Brennan, 2014). Initial blood tests obtained are remarkable for an elevated creatine kinase (CK) and then diagnosis is typically confirmed with a genetic test showing a mutation in the dystrophin gene (Ruiten et al, 2014). …

Acute Pancreatitis, Laura Skidmore Jul 2015

Acute Pancreatitis, Laura Skidmore

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

Acute pancreatitis (AP) can be a singular incidence, a relapsing process or exacerbations of chronic pancreatitis. AP is a rapidly developing inflammatory disorder of the pancreas and can affect other organ systems. The process begins when pancreatic enzymes are activated prematurely and leak into surrounding tissue. The digestive process begins before reaching the intestines. AP is characterized clinically by abdominal pain and elevated levels of pancreatic enzymes in the blood. The pathogenesis is not fully understood however, a number of conditions are known to induce the disorder such as gallstones and chronic alcohol abuse (Schub & Kornusky, 2014)

Cardiac Tamponade, Ashley Miner Jul 2015

Cardiac Tamponade, Ashley Miner

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

The topic the author chose to research is cardiac tamponade. Cardiac tamponade occurs when fluid builds up in the pericardial cavity, which is the cavity that surrounds the heart. Cardiac tamponade can occur due to various reasons, including myocardial infarctions, pericarditis, traumas, and placement of pacer wires. Palpitations, chest pain, and shortness of breath are common symptoms that occur with cardiac tamponade. Pericardiocentesis and a pericardial window are two interventions that are commonly used to treat cardiac tamponade. Cardiac tamponade is a medical emergency and without any intervention, may lead to cardiac arrest and possible death. The author chose cardiac …

Myasthenia Gravis And Implications For The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, Matthew Predick Jul 2015

Myasthenia Gravis And Implications For The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, Matthew Predick

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

In healthcare and, specifically anesthesia, there are many conditions that require various considerations by the prudent provider. An example of a condition requiring special attention is myasthenia gravis. Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune disease in which skeletal muscle weakness and rapid fatigue result from destruction of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors [7]. Although the prevalence is not overwhelmingly high with most recent estimates of prevalence around 14 to 20 per 100,000 people in the United States [5] and 20 per 100,000 worldwide [9], inappropriate perioperative management of those with this ailment can result in serious consequences. Understanding the pathophysiology, various treatments (both …

Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis: Understanding Has Led To Exciting Treatments, William Metz Jul 2015

Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis: Understanding Has Led To Exciting Treatments, William Metz

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

Pulmonary fibrosis can be described as an excessive amounts of fibrous connective lung tissue in the lung. Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis(IPF) is the most common form of interstitial lung disease(ILD). When an obvious cause cannot be determined, a diagnosis of Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is made. The mean survival for patients is approximately 3-5 years from time of diagnosis. IPF is found primarily in men over 50 years of age, with a history of cigarette smoking with concurrent environmental and occupational inhalation exposures(Leslie, 2011, p. 592). Pulmonary fibrosis has been identified by early pathologists at the beginning of the last century. During …

Cervical Spinal Cord Injury, Melissa Schimmel Jul 2015

Cervical Spinal Cord Injury, Melissa Schimmel

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

A spinal cord injury (SCI) can occur at any level of the spinal cord. A SCI involves an interruption between the brain and the body due to an injury or damage to the spinal cord (Sheppard Center, 2011, p1.). The location and extent of the injury is important because it will determine the severity and extent of dysfunction. The higher the injury is to the spinal cord, the more severe the loss of motor function (Sheppard Center, 2011, p.4). The spinal cord injuries are classified by based on the extent of injury, motor and sensory losses. The injury is considered …

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm: A Silent Killer, Kristen Springer Jul 2015

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm: A Silent Killer, Kristen Springer

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

Rupture of an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a significant cause of mortality in the United States. “Often asymptomatic, AAA is considered a silent killer because it frequently remains undiagnosed until the time of rupture or the patient’s death” (Gordon & Toursarkinssian, p. 242). As healthcare professionals, being aware of the pathophysiology, risk factors and symptoms influencing this disease is important in aiding early diagnosis and treatment, helping to reduce complications and mortality rates of those affected.

Pathophysiology And Treatment Of Life-Threatening Angioedema, Stephen J. Hoffman Jul 2015

Pathophysiology And Treatment Of Life-Threatening Angioedema, Stephen J. Hoffman

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

Angioedema is a potentially lethal swelling of the interstitial space from extravasation of intravascular plasma (Wood, Choromanski, & Orlewicz, 2013). Angioedema may present in any medical setting with a broad range of severity. Angioedema is commonly seen in emergency departments and intensive care units. According to Barbara, Ronan, Maddox, & Warner (2013), “angioedema is of particular importance to anesthesiologists, as it may present at any point in the perioperative period and it may rapidly become life-threatening if it involves airway compromise” (p. 335). Anesthesia professionals may also respond to airway management emergencies throughout the hospital setting and may treat angioedema …

Preparedness Of Nurses For Malignant Hyperthermia, Melissa Flemming Jul 2015

Preparedness Of Nurses For Malignant Hyperthermia, Melissa Flemming

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

Malignant hyperthermia (MH) is a potentially life threatening disorder that occurs following exposure to certain inhaled anesthetics such as halothane, isoflurane, sevoflurane, desflurane, enflurane, ether, and methoxyflurane alone or in combination with the depolarizing muscle relaxant, succinylcholine (Seifert,, Wahr, Pace, Cochrane, & Bagnola, 2014, p. 189). Patients experiencing malignant hyperthermia may progress to death if it is not recognized and treated early. Patient outcomes improve the earlier an intervention is given. Malignant hyperthermia is not a common condition and, therefore, nurses are frequently unfamiliar with the common signs, symptoms, and treatments. Malignant hyperthermia can occur in a variety of settings …

The Importance Of Evaluation And Management Of Sepsis, Severe Sepsis, And Septic Shock, Katherine Herda

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

Sepsis is a life-threatening and complicated host response to the presence of infection that is affecting millions of individuals around the world each year (Dellinger et al., 2013, p. 583). According to Gray et al. (2013), sepsis is not only one of the primary causes of hospital admission but it is also a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide (p. 397). Severe sepsis and septic shock are the more advanced and detrimental stages of sepsis, which are starting to increase in incidence and are killing one in four (and sometimes more) individuals infected (Dellinger et al., 2013, p. 583). …

Dualism And Doctrine, Dov Fox, Alex Stein Jul 2015

Dualism And Doctrine, Dov Fox, Alex Stein

Indiana Law Journal

What kinds of harm among those that tortfeasors inflict are worthy of compensation? Which forms of self-incriminating evidence are privileged against government compulsion? What sorts of facts constitute a criminal defendant’s intent? Existing doctrine pins the answer to all of these questions on whether the injury, facts, or evidence at stake are “mental” or “physical.” The assumption that operations of the mind are meaningfully distinct from those of the body animates fundamental rules in our law.

A tort victim cannot recover for mental harm on its own because the law presumes that he is able to unfeel any suffering arising …

The large size of the pig and its similarity in anatomy, physiology, metabolism, and genetics to humans make it an ideal platform to develop a genetically defined, large animal model of cancer. To this end, we created a transgenic "oncopig" line encoding Cre recombinase inducible porcine transgenes encoding KRASG12D and TP53R167H, which represent a commonly mutated oncogene and tumor suppressor in human cancers, respectively. Treatment of cells derived from these oncopigs with the adenovirus encoding Cre (AdCre) led to KRASG12D and TP53R167H expression, which rendered the cells transformed in culture and tumorigenic when engrafted into …

Clinical Spectrum And Radiographic Features Of The Syndrome Of The Trephined, Cara L. Sedney, William Dillen, Terrence Julien

Neurosurgery Faculty Publications

OBJECT: Craniectomy is a common neurosurgical procedure. Syndrome of the trephined (ST) occurring after craniectomy results in neurologic symptoms that are reversible with cranioplasty. While well-documented, previous literature consisted of case reports, symptom spectrum and risk factors have not been well characterized.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of 29 consecutive cases who underwent decompressive craniectomy within a 30-month period was performed. Patients were considered affected by ST if a previously stable neurological deficit improved within 3 weeks after cranioplasty. Prevalence of ST was measured and association with demographic information, clinical symptoms patterns, indication for and size of craniectomy, as …

Effects Of Cocaine Sensitization On Drug Self-Administration, Mesocorticolimbic Sapap Levels, And Prefrontal Ionotropic Glutamate Receptors, Kyle Christopher Summers Jul 2015

Effects Of Cocaine Sensitization On Drug Self-Administration, Mesocorticolimbic Sapap Levels, And Prefrontal Ionotropic Glutamate Receptors, Kyle Christopher Summers

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Towards the goal of improving the knowledge base of how drugs of abuse function to create addicts and using currently uninvestigated areas of this knowledge base, we focused our research studies the male albino rat, and strived to explain how cocaine sensitization alters particular molecular mechanisms in the mesocorticolimbic system related to glutamate receptors, SAPAPs, and affects drug self-administration. Taking all the previously discussed research studies into consideration, we hypothesized that low-dose cocaine self-administration would yield a significant elevation in drug seeking behavior for psychostimulant sensitized animals. For specific changes at the PSD, we hypothesized that acute cocaine exposure and/or …

PURPOSE. An alternative cancer therapy based on RNA interference (RNAi) has shown considerable promise but the possibility of resistance development is not known. This study explored the possibility of therapeutic resistance against siRNA nanoparticles in human cancer cells. METHODS. Two approaches to siRNA treatment were undertaken using lipid-modified polyethylenimines, a single high concentration (shock) and repeated increasing concentrations (gradual). The targets were Mcl-1, RPS6KA5 and KSP in MDA-MB-435 cells. RESULTS. There was no evidence of resistance development in shock-treated cells, while the decrease in mRNA levels of targeted proteins was not as robust in naïve cells in gradual treatment. However, …

Neural Plasticity In Response To Intervention In Adolescents With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Sheryl Jayne Stevens Jul 2015

Neural Plasticity In Response To Intervention In Adolescents With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Sheryl Jayne Stevens

Dissertations (1934 -)

Current theories of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) suggest that they may develop from the transactional interaction between biological risk factors and environmental processes (Dawson et al., 2009). Due to the brain’s experience-expectant nature, one’s degree of social exposure may have a significant impact on their brain development and behavioral presentation. In addition to the primary critical neurodevelopmental period identified in early childhood, recent research has demonstrated a second period of substantial neurodevelopment during the adolescent period (Sisk & Foster, 2004). This study investigated the neural and behavioral impact of participation in an empirically validated behavioral intervention (The Program for the …

Higher Hepatic Mir-29 Expression In Undernourished Male Rats During The Postnatal Period Targets The Long-Term Repression Of Insulin-Like Growth Factor 1, Gurjeev Sohi, Andrew Revesz, Julie Ramkumar, Daniel B. Hardy Jun 2015

Hardy

Physiology and Pharmacology Publications

A nutritional mismatch in postnatal life of low birth weight offspring increases the risk of developing the metabolic syndrome. Moreover, this is associated with decreased hepatic insulin-like growth factor 1 (Igf1) expression, leading to impaired growth and metabolism. Previously we have demonstrated that the timing of nutritional restoration in perinatal life can differentially programhepatic gene expression. While micro RNAs also play an important role in silencing gene expression, to date, the impact of a nutritional mismatch in neonatal life on their long-term expression has not been evaluated. Given the complementarity of miR-29 to the 3i-UTR of Igf1, we examined how …

A Structural And Functional Comparison Between Infectious And Non-Infectious Autocatalytic Recombinant Prp Conformers, Geoffrey P. Noble, Daphne W. Wang, Daniel J. Walsh, Justin R. Barone, Michael B. Miller, Koren A. Nishina, Sheng Li, Surachai Supattapone Jun 2015

A Structural And Functional Comparison Between Infectious And Non-Infectious Autocatalytic Recombinant Prp Conformers, Geoffrey P. Noble, Daphne W. Wang, Daniel J. Walsh, Justin R. Barone, Michael B. Miller, Koren A. Nishina, Sheng Li, Surachai Supattapone

Dartmouth Scholarship

Infectious prions contain a self-propagating, misfolded conformer of the prion protein termed PrPSc. A critical prediction of the protein-only hypothesis is that autocatalytic PrPSc molecules should be infectious. However, some autocatalytic recombinant PrPSc molecules have low or undetectable levels of specific infectivity in bioassays, and the essential determinants of recombinant prion infectivity remain obscure. To identify structural and functional features specifically associated with infectivity, we compared the properties of two autocatalytic recombinant PrP conformers derived from the same original template, which differ by >105-fold in specific infectivity for wild-type mice. Structurally, hydrogen/deuterium exchange mass spectrometry (DXMS) studies revealed that solvent …

Taranis Functions With Cyclin A And Cdk1 In A Novel Arousal Center To Control Sleep In Drosophila., Dinis J.S. Afonso, Die Liu, Daniel R. Machado, Huihui Pan, James E.C. Jepson, Dragana Rogulja, Kyunghee Koh Jun 2015

Taranis Functions With Cyclin A And Cdk1 In A Novel Arousal Center To Control Sleep In Drosophila., Dinis J.S. Afonso, Die Liu, Daniel R. Machado, Huihui Pan, James E.C. Jepson, Dragana Rogulja, Kyunghee Koh

Department of Neuroscience Faculty Papers

Sleep is an essential and conserved behavior whose regulation at the molecular and anatomical level remains to be elucidated. Here, we identify TARANIS (TARA), a Drosophila homolog of the Trip-Br (SERTAD) family of transcriptional coregulators, as a molecule that is required for normal sleep patterns. Through a forward-genetic screen, we isolated tara as a novel sleep gene associated with a marked reduction in sleep amount. Targeted knockdown of tara suggests that it functions in cholinergic neurons to promote sleep. tara encodes a conserved cell-cycle protein that contains a Cyclin A (CycA)-binding homology domain. TARA regulates CycA protein levels and genetically …

BACKGROUND: Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) occur predominately in males. However, AAAs in females have rapid growth rates and rupture at smaller sizes. Mechanisms contributing to AAA progression in females are undefined. We defined effects of ovariectomy, with and without 17-β estradiol (E2), on progression of established angiotensin II (AngII)-induced AAAs in female mice.

METHODS: We used neonatal testosterone exposures at 1 day of age to promote susceptibility to AngII-induced AAAs in adult female Ldlr-/- mice. Females were infused with AngII for 28 days to induce AAAs, and then stratified into groups that were sham, ovariectomized (Ovx, vehicle), or Ovx …

Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second leading cause of cancer-related death afflicting United States males. Most treatments to-date for metastatic PCa include androgen-deprivation therapy and second-generation anti-androgens such as abiraterone acetate and enzalutamide. However, a majority of patients eventually develop resistance to these therapies and relapse into the lethal, castration-resistant form of PCa to which no adequate treatment option remains. Hence, there is an immediate need to develop effective therapeutic agents toward this patient population. Imidazopyridines have recently been shown to possess Akt kinase inhibitory activity; thus in this study, we investigated the inhibitory effect of novel imidazopyridine derivatives HIMP, …
