Pathophysiological Significance Of Blood Rheology, Oğuz Keri̇m Başkurt Jan 2003

Pathophysiological Significance Of Blood Rheology, Oğuz Keri̇m Başkurt

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Tissue perfusion is determined by both blood vessel geometry and the rheological properties of blood. Blood is a non-Newtonian fluid, its viscosity being dependent on flow conditions. Blood and plasma viscosities, as well as the rheological properties of blood cells (e.g., deformability and aggregation of red blood cells), are influenced by disease processes and extreme physiological conditions. These rheological parameters may in turn affect the blood flow in vessels, and hence tissue perfusion. Unfortunately it is not always possible to determine if a change in rheological parameters is the cause or the result of a disease process. The hemorheology-tissue perfusion …

Reversible Conduction Block In Frog Sciatic Nerve For Three Different Concentrations Of Bupivacaine, Belgi̇n Büyükakilli, Ülkü Çömelekoğlu, Oya Öğenler

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

We examined the effects of various concentrations of the bupivacaine commonly used for spinal anaesthesia on the reversibility of conduction block in isolated frog sciatic nerves measured by the extracellular recording technique. Seventy-two isolated nerves were divided into 3 groups (n = 24), each of which was bathed in a different bupivacaine solution in a range of concentrations (10, 20 or 30 mM for 20 min). In each group, the extracellular action potentials were recorded before exposure to the bupivacaine solution to provide the control data. The extracellular action potentials were recorded after 20 min exposure to the drug by …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Overexpression of erbB-2 protein is a marker of clinically aggressive behavior in breast cancer patients. In general erbB-2 status is reported on a scale from negative to 3+, depending on staining intensity, if more than 10% of the tumor cells are stained. However, the original definition does not take into account the percentage of stained cells in detail, since all samples score in the same way if they are above the cut-off, established at 10%. In this study, we evaluated the erB-B2 overexpression by immunohistochemistry in 169 patients and evaluated any correlation with the other well known prognostic parameters. We …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Echinococcosis is an infection caused by Echinococcus granulosus and E. multilocularis. It manifests as cyst formations in various organs, affecting both humans and animals. The cysts may be unilocular (E. granulosus) or multilocular (E. multilocularis). Multilocular cysts have particular significance, for their macroscopic appearance is reminiscent of malignant tumors and their prognosis is poor. The purpose of this study is to describe our cases and to start a discussion on the current echinococcosis problem in İzmir, western Anatolia. The pathological features of 80 cases of echinococcosis diagnosed at Dokuz Eylül University Pathology Department over the last 21 years have been …

The Serum Levels Of Il-1\Beta, Il-6, Il-8 And Tnf-\Alpha In Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver, İlyas Tuncer, Hanefi̇ Özbek, Cevat Topal, İsmai̇l Uygan

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Nonalcoholic fatty liver (NAFL) has an extensive clinical spectrum ranging from simple fatty liver to steatohepatitis and cirrhosis. Its pathogenesis is multifactorial. The aim of our study was to measure the serum levels of some cytokines (IL-1\beta, IL-6, IL-8 and TNF-\alpha), which are thought to play a role in the pathogenesis of NAFL. Thirty subjects (18 males, 12 females) with clinical and laboratory features of hepatosteatosis were enrolled in the study as the patient group (group 1) and 30 healthy subjects (21 males, 9 females) served as controls (group 2). The levels of hepatic transaminases, gamma-glutamyltransferase, alkaline phosphatase, total cholesterol, …

Determination Of Alkaline Phosphatase Activity In Patients With Different Zinc Metabolic Disorders, Zine Kechrid, Rabah Kenouz Jan 2003

Determination Of Alkaline Phosphatase Activity In Patients With Different Zinc Metabolic Disorders, Zine Kechrid, Rabah Kenouz

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Our purpose was to investigate the effect of different zinc metabolic disorders on alkaline phosphatase activity. Serum zinc, glucose and alkaline phosphatase activity were studied in 32 patients with liver cirrhosis, 30 with chronic renal failure and 42 with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) compared to 42 healthy volunteers. Serum glucose concentration was significantly higher (P < 0.001) in IDDM and liver cirrhosis patients (P < 0.05) compared to the controls. Serum zinc concentrations tended to be lower in all different diseases but did not reach statistical significance. Alkaline phosphatase activity was higher in IDDM (P < 0.05) and liver cirrhosis patients (P < 0.01) compared with the controls. No positive correlation between serum zinc and alkaline phosphatase activity was recorded in any disease. In conclusion, the investigated diseases did not affect the level of serum zinc; however, there was an alteration in alkaline phosphatase activity in patients suffering from diabetes and liver cirrhosis. Consequently, this may be attributed to the functional disturbance that occurred in these patients. Finally, zinc concentration did not follow alkaline phosphatase activity as indicated by the weak correlation obtained.

The Role Of Oxidative Stress In Alzheimer's Disease, Robin Petroze Jan 2003

The Role Of Oxidative Stress In Alzheimer's Disease, Robin Petroze

Kaleidoscope

Over four million individuals in the United States currently suffer from Alzheimer's disease (AD), a devastating disorder of progressive dementia. Within the next several decades, AD is expected to affect over 22 million people globally. AD can only be definitively diagnosed by postmortem examination. Thus, investigation into the specific pathogenesis of neuronal degeneration and death in AD on a biochemical level is essential for both earlier diagnosis and potential treatment and prevention options. Overproduction of amyloid [3-peptide (A[3) in the brain leads to both free radical oxidative stress and toxicity to neurons in AD. My undergraduate biochemical studies with regard …
