To evaluate the protective effect of tryptophan on an experimentally produced hypoxic myocardial injury via biochemical and pathological parameters. Materials and methods: A total of 26 rabbits were divided into 3 groups. Group 1 (n = 9) was only exposed to hypoxia. Group 2 (n = 10) was exposed to hypoxia and received L-tryptophan (200 mg/kg per day, orally for 5 days). Group 3 (n = 7) was the control group. Prolonged duration of nocturnal melatonin increase has been implicated in the pathogenesis of the seasonal affective disorder (SAD) winter depression. This study was designed to investigate behavioral and physiological consequences of constant dark exposure in male rats for its potential application to human affective disorders. To evaluate whether subclinical hypothyroidism (SH) is associated with anthropometry and fatty infiltration of liver in obese adolescents. Materials and methods: The adolescents attended with the complaint of obesity aged 11 to 15 years included in the study. Patients were diagnosed as obese adolescents with fatty liver. Age-, gender-, and body weight-matched obese adolescents without fatty liver seen during the same period served as controls. Breast tuberculosis is a very rare disease of the breast. This report aimed to review our clinical experience of 20 years and 7 cases of breast tuberculosis. Materials and methods: The records of 7 patients with breast tuberculosis were reviewed retrospectively. Results: The surgical procedure applied for breast tuberculosis comprised 1.3% of all surgical procedures of breast surgery. The mean age of the breast tuberculosis patients was 36 years, and all of the patients were female. The mean symptom duration was 12.8 months. Urodynamic studies have been associated with an increased risk of bacteriuria and symptomatic urinary tract infection (UTI) because it is applied by invasive catheterization. In this study the value of antibiotic prophylaxis in decreasing the risk of bacteriuria and symptomatic UTI has been questioned in children. Materials and methods: Urine samples of 90 patients, who were taken before and after urodynamic testing in Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine Videourodynamics Laboratory of Child Surgery Department, were cultured microbiologically to determine the presence of bacteriuria. To determine the effect of passive smoking on the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) among persons who spend a long time in cafes. Materials and methods: The study sample included 348 male smokers who were older than 40 years and spend a long time in cafes. The questions were derived from the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) questionnaire. We also inquired about the nature of cafe visits (hours/day, visits/week, visits/month). To determine the incidence, risk factors, etiology, and antibiotic susceptibility of hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) in nonintensive care units (non-ICU) and nonintubated adult patients. Materials and methods: A prospective surveillance study was performed from January 2006 through December 2007 in the medical and surgical wards of the İzmir Teaching and Research Hospital. Results: During the study period, data on 57,133 patients with a total of 413,515 patient-days were analyzed. A total of 106 HAP episodes occurred in 99 patients. To determine the sociodemographic and behavioral characteristics of adolescents who attempt suicide and evaluate them by different scales. Materials and methods: The study was conducted with 116 adolescent suicide attempters and 98 age-matched healthy controls. Results: The mean age of all adolescents was 13.8 ± 1.2 years, with ages ranging from 11 to 16 years. Of these adolescents, 82.7% were girls. The total Suicide Probability Scale score was negatively correlated with the total Reasons for Living Inventory (r = -0.42, P = 0.001) and positively correlated with the Problem Solving Inventory score, which is indicative of low problem-solving capabilities (r …

To determine the possible relationship between toxoplasmosis and patients with first-episode schizophrenia (FES). Materials and methods: Seventy-three subjects with FES (15-54 years old; mean: 23.4 years) and 40 healthy individuals (20-54 years old; mean: 30.3 years) were enrolled in the study. Most of the FES patients (90.4%) and the control individuals (95.0%) were male. Specific IgG and IgM antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii were investigated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and the total amount of antibodies was investigated with the Sabin-Feldman dye test (SFDT). To analyze urinary tract stones obtained in our clinic using various methods and to determine the spectrum of stone composition in the Eastern Anatolia Region, Turkey. Materials and methods: A total of 300 stones were obtained at Atatürk University, Faculty of Medicine Urology Clinic through open surgery, percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PNL), ureterorenoscopy (URS), and extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy (ESWL) between 1 January 2005 and 30 December 2008. To investigate the effect of Viscum album, a plant used for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma that has immune-modulating properties, on acute hepatic injury in rats. Materials and methods: Hepatotoxicity was induced by CCl_4 orally (0.28 mL/kg). Rats received either Viscum album at 1 of 2 dose levels (0.1 or 0.2 mL/kg) once weekly subcutaneously alone or with silymarin (25 mg/kg, orally), or silymarin (25 mg/kg) once daily orally for 1 month, starting at the time of administration of CCl_4. To investigate the disc-capsule complex and condyle attachments of the lateral pterygoid muscle and its variations. Materials and methods: Forty-nine temporomandibular joint (TMJ) specimens were used, obtained from 26 human cadavers. The insertion point of each muscle head was determined. The widths and lengths of the heads were measured. Results: In 32 specimens, 2-headed muscles were present, while 3 heads were observed in 17 specimens. To investigate the characteristics of Salmonella serotype Typhi and Salmonella serotype Paratyphi B, which still remain significant in Turkey. Materials and methods: Eighteen S. Typhi and 42 S. Paratyphi B strains isolated from clinical samples were investigated by plasmid profile analysis, enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus-polymerase chain reaction (ERIC-PCR), and pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) methods. Results: Plasmid profile analysis showed that 10 out of 18 (56%) S. Typhi isolates harbored 1 to 3 plasmids, and 11 out of 42 (26.2%) S. Paratyphi B isolates harbored 1 to 4 plasmids. To investigate the effect of melatonin added to preservation solution on liver cold ischemia. Materials and methods: Twenty male Wistar albino rats were divided equally into groups treated with University of Wisconsin (UW) solution with and without melatonin. The LDH, AST, and ACP activities of the preservation solutions were determined in samples collected at 2, 24, 36, and 48 h. In this study, we sought to evaluate percutaneous transthoracic biopsy results using a coaxial system. Materials and methods: The records of 302 patients (mean age, 63.1 years) who underwent percutaneous CT-guided coaxial cutting needle lung and mediastinal biopsy were retrospectively evaluated. The measurement of ocular alignment can be challenging and difficult to reproduce. A method for the measurement of ocular alignment with accuracy, speed, and reproducibility would be a useful clinical addition. Materials and methods: A hand-held device consisting of a rotary prism and a red Maddox rod was constructed. This was used to evaluate 18 patients with ocular misalignment and the results were compared with the ones obtained using the prism cover testing. To investigate the effects of essential hypertension on QTc dispersion (QTcd) in patients with intracerebral haematoma (ICH). Materials and methods: This prospective study included adult patients presenting with acute ICH within the first 24 h of ictus to the Emergency Department (ED). On admission, following the first clinical assessment of patients, a complete 12-lead ECG and non-contrast computed tomography (CT) were obtained from each patient. Dendritic cells (DCs) are potent antigen-presenting cells crucial for initiation of cell-mediated immune responses to foreign antigens. They also contribute to the innate resistance against microbial pathogens. The present study examined the effect of microorganisms such as Escherichia coli (E. coli), Serratia marcescens (S. marcescens), Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), coagulase negative staphylococci (CoNS), and Candida albicans (C. albicans) on cytokine secretion in bone marrow-dendritic cells (BM-DCs). After conventional aqueous disinfectant solutions, it was shown that microorganisms were still protected in hair follicles. We hypothesized that those aqueous disinfectant solutions when used in combination with alcohol may be more effective on the inhibition of recolonization of skin and therefore catheter tip colonization. Materials and methods: Skin surface samples were taken from epidural catheter insertion sites prior to catheterization, and before and after disinfection with different combinations of povidone-iodine, chlorhexidine, and alcohol. To evaluate the efficacy of the biphasic and triphasic dynamic multidedector computerized tomography (MDCT) in the preoperative prediction of histological subtypes of renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Materials and methods: The preoperative dynamic MDCT findings of 51 patients with renal mass who had undergone nephrectomy were reviewed retrospectively. Twenty-five of the patients had biphasic (portal and excretory) and 26 had triphasic (arterial, portal, and excretory) MDCT images. Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a common condition in healthy people, causing morbidity and mortality worldwide despite latest advances in therapy and immunization procedures. Causative agents cannot be detected in approximately 50% of CAP episodes and therapy is initiated empirically.
