Sprinting, Isokinetic Strength, And Range Of Motion Of Ankle Joints In Turkish Male And Female National Sprinters May Have A Relationship, Habi̇be Serap İnal, Burçi̇n Erbuğ, Christos Kotzamanidis

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

We aimed to observe the isokinetic muscular strength differences of the ankle-foot complex of sprinters of both sexes to understand the effectiveness of the ankle and subtalar ranges of motion on the sprint performances of elite athletes. Materials and methods: Elite Turkish national sprinters (n = 11; 5 females and 6 males) were assessed regarding their ankle joint isokinetic performance (30°/s and 120°/s), joint ranges, and sprint times. Results: A significant difference was observed between the average power of the right dorsiflexors (P < 0.001) of female athletes and the right invertors (P < 0.05) of male athletes at 120°/s for the 100-m sprint time. The average powers of the right (P < 0.05) and left (P < 0.05) evertors of the male athletes at 30°/s were significantly negatively correlated with sprint time. Additionally, only the plantar flexion range was significant for male athletes' sprint times, and the dominant invertors' peak torque at 120°/s in female athletes was significant (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The strength of the nondominant side dorsiflexors of female athletes and the nondominant invertors of male athletes are important in decreasing the strength asymmetry to disregard the strength of the nondominant side in relation to sprint performance.

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The present study was designed to investigate the relationship among the serum paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) activity, lipid levels, and thyroid hormone status in patients with hyperthyroidism. Materials and methods: The study group comprised 30 patients with primary hyperthyroidism and 18 normal healthy controls who were matched for age and sex. Serum PON-1 activity was determined by spectrophotometric methods. Results: Serum PON-1 activity was found to be lower in patients compared to controls (P < 0.05). Free triiodothyronine (T3) and free thyroxine (T4) levels were significantly higher in the patient group compared to the control group (P < 0.001 and P < 0.001 respectively). Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and total cholesterol values were found to be lower in patients than in the controls (P < 0.001 and P < 0.001 respectively). Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were found to be decreased in patients compared to controls (P < 0.005). Triglyceride and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were not significantly different between the 2 groups (P > 0.05). Serum PON-1 activity was found to be negatively correlated with free T4 levels (r = -0.324, P < 0.05) and positively correlated with total cholesterol (r = 0.330, P < 0.05) and TSH levels (r = 0.577, P < 0.001). Conclusion: Our PON-1 results show that there is decreased antioxidant defense in patients with hyperthyroidism. Therefore, we think that effective antioxidant therapy to increase PON-1 activity may be a therapeutic option in patients with hyperthyroidism.

The objective of this prospective study was to evaluate the potential role of 2-[18f]-fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) in the differentiation of malignant and benign breast masses and the evaluation of axillary lymph node involvement. The secondary objective of this study was to assess the value of FDG PET in the initial staging of patients with breast cancer. Materials and methods: We evaluated 82 lesions in 79 consecutive patients (mean age of 54.4 ± 13.0; age range: 25-82 years) with FDG PET. While ultrasounds were performed in all cases, of the 79 patients, 72 had mammography and 58 had …

Bloodstream infections (BSIs) due to Staphylococcus aureus have become increasingly common in hospitals worldwide. The aim of this study was to evaluate the risk factors for mortality of nosocomial BSI due to S. aureus. Materials and methods: We analyzed risk factors for mortality of methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) bacteremia in a prospective case control study in a 1196-bed tertiary referral medical center. Logistic regression analyses were used to determine risk factors and prognostic factors of mortality. Results: Between July 2006 and January 2009, 176 patients were identified with clinically significant and microbiologically confirmed nosocomial bacteremia …

The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of handmade transobturator tape (TOT) devices (tailored polypropylene mesh by the surgeon during the operation) with commercially available ones. Materials and methods: We included 78 consecutive women with the complaint of pure stress urinary incontinence recalcitrant to lifestyle modifications, pelvic floor muscle training, and medical treatment. The patients underwent TOT procedures either with a commercially available product (I-Stop, CL Medical, Lyon, France) (group 1) or with a device prepared during the operation with polypropylene mesh of 35 × 2 cm in size (Prolen®, Ethicon Inc., Somerville, New Jersey, USA) (group …
