Online Sexual Health Education With Rural Independent Study Charter School Students, Crystal L. Gardner Msn, Phn, Rn
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Background: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unwanted pregnancies continue to be public health problems in the United States. Each year there are about 20 million new STIs in the United States with about half of the infections occurring in people 15 to 24 years old (The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2016).
Objectives: The purpose of this descriptive pre- and post-test study was to determine if an online STI prevention program increased knowledge about STIs, STI related resources, and lowered STI risk-taking behaviors in rural northern California students attending an alternative high school.
Methodology: “Positive Prevention PLUS” curriculum and …

Evaluation Of A Simulation-Based Nurse Residency Program, Cheri A. Van Wyngarden
Evaluation Of A Simulation-Based Nurse Residency Program, Cheri A. Van Wyngarden
Doctoral Projects
Upon completion of nursing school, new graduate nurses sit for licensure examination to demonstrate the minimal knowledge necessary to practice safely as an entry level nurse. Despite satisfactory completion of this examination, many new graduate nurses lack the competency and confidence to safely practice (Jung, Lee, Kang, & Kim, 2016 & Liaw, Palham, Chan, Wong & Lim, 2014). Traditional models of preceptorship with orientation are not adequately preparing new graduate nurses for practice. Nurse residency programs narrow the gap between demonstrated knowledge and competent practice. Varying types of nurse residency programs have successfully replaced traditional nursing orientation methods across the …

A Case Report Of Case Report Pursuit By Medical Student, Jonathan Li, Jennifer Wilson, Wayne Bond Lau
Student Papers, Posters & Projects
Medical students often seek case reports as vehicles for academic writing opportunities, conference presentation avenues, and residency/fellowship application highlights. Here we review a case where, due to unfortunate circumstances, a student made a unique diagnosis central to proper patient clinical care, wished to write up the case subsequently, but was ultimately excluded from the final work stemming from the patient case. We review the pitfalls that occurred in the process of pursuing publication of an interesting case, the educational value of pursuing case reports for students, the necessity for strong mentorship in this process, and general principles that medical students …

New Internal Medicine Residency Program At A Community Hospital Improves Mortality Without Increasing The Cost Or Length Of Stay: A Two-Year Follow Up., Javad Savoj, Christine Mikhail, Rajesh Gulati, Napatkamon Ayutyanont, Alina Popa
Medical Education
Opening new residency programs in community hospitals is one strategy to address to address physician shortage. Previous reports have shown better mortality outcomes in university based hospitals. However, less is known about teaching community hospitals. Disrupting well-established workflows in community hospitals is feared to cause an increased cost and possibly a slide in quality of care. Our aim was to assess the impact of starting a new Internal Medicine residency program in a Graduate Medical Education (GME) naive community hospital.
