Sustainability In Quality Improvement And Patient Safety Initiatives, Angelo P. Giardino, Eileen R. Giardino Apr 2019

Sustainability In Quality Improvement And Patient Safety Initiatives, Angelo P. Giardino, Eileen R. Giardino

Journal of Nursing & Interprofessional Leadership in Quality & Safety

The question often asked of a quality improvement initiative is whether the improvement process has been sustained within the organization. Rarely is the question answered satisfactorily. The sustainability of an improvement process is important as it justifies the investment of human and financial capital. The term 'evaporation of improvements' addresses the dilemma that between 33% to 70% of all innovations are reportedly not sustained (Fleiszer, Semenic, Ritchie, Richer, & Denis, 2015) . This evaporation of improvement captures the frustrating inability of many institutions to maintain the achieved improvement after the newness of the initial effort wears off (Buchanan, Fitzgerald, & …

Telemedicine Training In Undergraduate Medical Education: Mixed-Methods Review., Shayan Waseh, Mph, Adam P. Dicker, Md, Phd, Fastro

Student Papers, Posters & Projects

BACKGROUND: Telemedicine has grown exponentially in the United States over the past few decades, and contemporary trends in the health care environment are serving to fuel this growth into the future. Therefore, medical schools are learning to incorporate telemedicine competencies into the undergraduate medical education of future physicians so that they can more effectively leverage telemedicine technologies for improving the quality of care, increasing patient access, and reducing health care expense. This review articulates the efforts of allopathic-degree-granting medical schools in the United States to characterize and systematize the learnings that have been generated thus far in the domain of …

Bridging The Gap Between Academia And Practice: Possibilities For Research Collaboration And Funding, Anne H. Zachry Apr 2019

Bridging The Gap Between Academia And Practice: Possibilities For Research Collaboration And Funding, Anne H. Zachry

Faculty Presentations

Preparing a successful small grant proposal involves research, planning, preparation, and determination, but obtaining funding for a creative project is not unrealistic. Practitioners are in the trenches on a daily basis, and many likely have novel ideas and relevant questions, especially when it comes to interventions. These intervention questions are important, with the American Occupational Therapy Association reporting that more studies are needed to investigate and support occupation-based intervention. By developing partnerships, educators, practitioners, and students can engage in small scale projects to further the knowledge base in the field of occupational therapy.

Healthcare Students’ Abilities To Translate Interprofessional Education To Collaborative Practice, Sally A. Mccormack Tutt Apr 2019

Healthcare Students’ Abilities To Translate Interprofessional Education To Collaborative Practice, Sally A. Mccormack Tutt

Physical Therapy Faculty Publications

Interprofessional education is considered the first step to providing students with the knowledge and skill required to participate in interprofessional collaboration. The lingering question in research is if students can take these skills from the classroom to clinical practice. The answer to this question will help guide educators when developing effective IPE training. This quantitative, correlational study aimed to explore if healthcare students that participated in a two-part, case-based interprofessional educational session were able to transfer that skill to their clinical experience. Data was collected from healthcare students in the professions of physical therapy, occupational therapy, and nursing. The participants …

A Pilot And Feasibility Study Of Virtual Reality Guided Meditations In First-Year Medical Students, King John Pascual, Benjamin Blatt

GW Research Days 2016 - 2020

Virtual reality (VR) is a popular technology that places users in an interactive 3D environment. VR has been used to enhance surgery training, rehabilitation of brain injury survivors, and telepsychiatry. Our aim for this study is to assess the perception of first-year medical students on the value of a VR meditation program on stress reduction, both immediate and longer term. We recruited 10 volunteer participants. Each participant completed a guided meditation using a commercially available VR headset paired with a meditation app and oximeter that calculates a heart rate variability (HRV) index. Each meditation was five minutes long and participants …

An Examination Of The Flipped Classroom's Efficacy On Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Medical Students, Archita Chandra, Genevieve Schmitt, Rohini Ganjoo

GW Research Days 2016 - 2020

Existing flipped classroom (FC) research focuses on a typical, homogenous student population in terms of age. Research focuses on student satisfaction and perception of the FC to assess if student performance translates to actual perceived learning. Further, a growing number of studies show that outcomes of FC depend on student motivation. This study examines student performance, perception, and satisfaction in the FC in a novel demographic: Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Medical students. These students, who vary widely in age, experience, and prior knowledge of subject matter, are career changers who become full-time students to complete prerequisite coursework for medical school. Students enrolled in …

Blended learning (BL) is an e-learning approach that combines the strengths of both online and face-to-face learning, creating meaningful interactions between students, teachers, and resources. This paper explores students’ expectations and satisfaction with, and participation in, a basic science course offered through BL approaches in an undergraduate medical education programme in Pakistan. Developmental anatomy (embryology) was redesigned as a BL course and offered to a hundred first-year students. Both online activities and technology-assisted face-to-face interactive discussions were used in each topic. Students’ expectations were gathered at the start of the course and perceptions regarding their satisfaction with the course was …

Improving Undergraduate Student Engagement In A Hybrid Research Course, Genevieve B. Elrod Apr 2019

Improving Undergraduate Student Engagement In A Hybrid Research Course, Genevieve B. Elrod

Peer Reviewed Articles

Undergraduate nursing students have traditionally struggled to appreciate and understand research. Traditional teaching and learning methods in the research classroom are not meeting the needs of current students (McCurry & Martins, 2010), and innovations must be sought to overcome students' resistance to research. Efforts to improve the early research utilization skills and attitudes of students is critical if we are to hope for the grounding of their future practice in evidence.

To engage students in one hybrid research course, the faculty member created an innovative “March Madness” assignment that assists students in applying their learning. This article details …

Facilitating Transition To Practice For Millennial New Graduate Nurses, Tiffani Marie Wise Apr 2019

Facilitating Transition To Practice For Millennial New Graduate Nurses, Tiffani Marie Wise

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Despite the growing nursing shortage and the dire need for a full nursing workforce, attrition rates among new graduate nurses (NGNs) continues to be of concern. One answer to the nursing shortage includes the next generation of nursing graduates: millennials. It is vital that nursing administrators and educators collaborate to develop a transition-to-practice process that meets the unique needs of millennial NGNs to increase job satisfaction, thereby increasing intent to stay in the profession. The MSPM was implemented in an NGN medical-surgical residency as a means of maintaining job satisfaction, perceptions of support, and intent to stay, among NGNs. A …

Effects Of Teach-Back Method Of Education On Knowledge Of Heart Failure Self-Care Management And Post-Discharge Knowledge Retention, Ama Awuah-Asamoah Msn, Rn, Acnp

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background: Approximately forty to eighty percent of patient education is immediately forgotten, and about fifty percent of retained information is inaccurate; knowledge is an essential bridge between patient teaching, comprehension and knowledge retention by using the teach- back method (Farris, 2015; Rouse et al., 2016; Stamp et al., 2014).

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to compare teach-back education method versus standard education and care, on knowledge of heart failure (HF) self-care management at discharge and retention of knowledge at three to ten days post discharge.

Methods: A non-probability convenience sampling of 22 HF patients, 65 years and older, …

Designing Ethakul: A Mobile Just-In-Time Learning Environment For Bioethics In Pakistan, Azra Naseem, Kulsoom Ghias, Sohail Bawani, Mohammad Ali Shahab, Sameer Nizamuddin, Waqar Kashif, Kausar S. Khan, Tashfeen Ahmad, Murad Khan

Institute for Educational Development, Karachi

In developing countries such as Pakistan, bioethics has not been included in mainstream thinking in medical education. The authors’ experiences suggest that current methods of teaching bioethics are problematic as students are unable to translate theory to practice. Alternative pedagogies, such as just-in-time learning (JiTL) using mobile devices, may be able to foster the development and implementation of ethical reasoning among nurses, doctors, and medical and nursing students. This research was conceived to determine the effectiveness of mobile JiTL – anytime, anyplace learning through mobile devices – for teaching bioethics. After obtaining ethical clearance, a participatory design (PD) approach was …
