Examining Instructional Methods In End-Of-Life Nursing Education: Lecture Vs. Simulation, Jonathan M. Benson Jan 2020

Examining Instructional Methods In End-Of-Life Nursing Education: Lecture Vs. Simulation, Jonathan M. Benson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Undergraduate nursing programs have historically glossed over end-of-life care, if their curricula addressed it at all. This lack of instruction can leave practicing nurses feeling poorly prepared to deliver this specialized care. Feeling incompetent and lacking confidence may lead to poorer attitudes regarding this nursing specialty. Thus, effective continuing education activities are paramount in equipping nurses to provide this care and improve attitudes towards caring for terminally ill patients and their families. The purpose of this study was to examine how registered nurse attitudes towards end-of-life care are impacted using a simulation-based learning experience compared to a traditional face-to-face lecture …

An Evaluation Of The Factor Structure And Internal Consistency Of The ‘Conceptions Of Learning’ And ‘Preferences For Teaching’ Measures In American Occupational Therapy Students, Tore Bonsaksen, Adele Breen-Franklin Jan 2020

An Evaluation Of The Factor Structure And Internal Consistency Of The ‘Conceptions Of Learning’ And ‘Preferences For Teaching’ Measures In American Occupational Therapy Students, Tore Bonsaksen, Adele Breen-Franklin

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

When planning to use measurement scales in new samples and contexts, examining the scales’ psychometric properties is an important initial step. This study examined the factor structure and internal consistency of two measures that are part of the Approaches and Study Skills Inventory for Students (ASSIST) – the Conceptions of learning and Preferences for teaching and courses – in a sample of American occupational therapy students. The students (n = 115) completed the measures and provided basic sociodemographic information. Scale structure was examined with Principal Components Analysis (PCA), while consistency between scale items was assessed with mean inter-item correlations. …

Student Perceptions Of Research In An Occupational Therapy Doctoral Program: A Cross-Sectional Survey, Kristin A. Valdes, Stephanie Dalton, Deandra Modeste, Jacqueline J. Moskalczyk, Troy Olmo, Jacklynn M. Smith

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

Student perceptions of research in graduate programs play a role within the Occupational Therapy Doctorate (OTD) curriculum and how future clinicians value Evidence Based Practice and research. The Student Perception of Research Integration Questionnaire (SPRIQ) was utilized to examine students’ perceptions of research in their graduate coursework. Participants included in this study were all students enrolled in an occupational therapy doctorate program. All items were scored on a 5-point Likert scale. Mean scores were calculated for each item on the respondents’ submissions. The items were further categorized into subscales. The mean score of all items of the SPRIQ was 4.44 …

The Use Of Video In The Occupational Therapy Graduate Classroom, Stephanie Bachman Jan 2020

The Use Of Video In The Occupational Therapy Graduate Classroom, Stephanie Bachman

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

As the cost of graduate education continues to rise and occupational therapy moves toward a value-based reimbursement system, the development of clinical reasoning skills in a short timeframe becomes increasingly more important in occupational therapy education. Incorporating the use of video into occupational therapy curricula is an effective method of introducing and reinforcing material, developing critical thinking skills, and refining skills of interpersonal communication, observation, and documentation. Determining which technology to use, and how to integrate it effectively into a course, can be overwhelming for instructors, especially those new to using video applications. This article introduces various types of video …

Preparing Future Health Care Workers: An Assessment Of Undergraduate Student Integrative Pre-Health Education, Haley Bevza Brennan, Pamela Erickson Jan 2020

Preparing Future Health Care Workers: An Assessment Of Undergraduate Student Integrative Pre-Health Education, Haley Bevza Brennan, Pamela Erickson

Undergraduate Papers

This paper analyzes the current state of, and demand for, integrative pre-health education in the undergraduate setting, specifically at the University of Connecticut. Students’ knowledge of, exposure to, and attitudes towards complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) are assessed through a web-based survey and semi-structured interviews. This paper compares this research with surveys conducted in undergraduate, medical school, and medical professional settings to gauge current efforts to provide a more holistic approach to educating health care workers in subjects such as mind-body therapies, lifestyle contributors to health such as diet and exercise, culturally competent care, and therapeutic techniques outside of the …

Implementing Peer Instruction In Medical Education And The Impact On Student Success, Alexander Chase Jan 2020

Implementing Peer Instruction In Medical Education And The Impact On Student Success, Alexander Chase

Scholarship in Medicine - All Papers

In 1991, a physicist at Harvard University, Dr. Eric Mazur, implemented a new style of classroom learning into his introductory physics courses named Peer Instruction.1 The objective of Peer Instruction (PI) was to engage students in interactive discussion throughout the time spent in the classroom. In the PI format, students were assigned reading that was then tested at the start of each class through a reading quiz. Dr. Mazur then spent the remainder of class quizzing his students with questions that were designed to highlight the important aspects of the material in question. All students were required to participate by …

Grit And Medicine: Practicing Physicians, Residents, And Medical Students, Michael Bamisile

Scholarship in Medicine - All Papers

Introduction: Since 2012, researchers have focused on understanding the relationship between grit and the successful completion of medical school1. This study seeks to determine how grit levels, measured by survey at matriculation, relate to first year medical school academic performance. This study also seeks to address the discrepancy concerning measurement of grit and implications of grit in medical students before and during COVID-19 and the shift from in-class to on-line instruction. Methods: The data from this study were collected from Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine (WSUBSOM), a Midwestern allopathic medical school in the United States. Data were collected …
