COVID-19 negatively impacted students' abilities to participate in live, in-person events; students were unable to interact with peers or build relationships critical to success and well-being. Quarantine, social distancing and video conferencing did not create this problem however, it simply amplified the fact that dental students seemingly lack camaraderie and a sense of belongingness. The Curriculum and Cultural Ambassador group was created to allow students to bond over shared goals in the hopes of improving their experiences within dental school. This group gives students the ability to “Be the Change” on campus and enact real-time change to foster a sense …

HIPAA Infringements Correlate Linearly with Number of Social Media Users.
Social media use has made information sharing much easier – including protected health information. Interestingly, as social media has become more popular over the years, HIPAA violations have also become more common.
The calculated R and P values suggest a strong correlation exists between social media use and HIPAA complaints.

Potential Cost Savings With Implementation Of Systemwide Rasburicase Protocol, Parker Gundersen, Adalyn Lee
Potential Cost Savings With Implementation Of Systemwide Rasburicase Protocol, Parker Gundersen, Adalyn Lee
Annual Research Symposium
Purpose: Tumor Lysis Syndrome is a condition that takes place when apoptosis in cancer cells occurs within a short time period. This condition can lead to organ dysfunction and even death. Rasburicase is used to treat high uric acid levels in patients that are experiencing tumor lysis syndrome and is expensive. Dosing and frequency of rasburicase varies across health care institutions. This project evaluated if adherence to a systemwide rasburicase protocol could help reduce drug waste and reduce costs across a healthcare system.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective data analysis reviewing rasburicase doses administered across Intermountain Healthcare over the course …

Evidence-Based Best Practice For Discharge Planning: A Policy Review, Marissa Lewis
Evidence-Based Best Practice For Discharge Planning: A Policy Review, Marissa Lewis
Student Scholarly Projects
Ineffective discharge planning produces poor patient healthcare outcomes, potential adverse events, and medical errors. A primary deterrent to successful discharge planning is communication, either within the interdisciplinary team or during handoff to the receiving transition of care facilities of home health, skilled nursing, or acute rehabilitation.
The purpose of the evaluation project was to determine if current policies, communication tools, and workflows of three healthcare organizations were based on evidence and make recommendations for policy revisions. The Johns Hopkins Evidence-Based Practice for Nurses and Healthcare Professionals Model (JHNEBP) was used with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Policy Process (POLARIS) …

Oral Care Bundle Impact On Staff Assisted Oral Care, Sabrina Oliver
Student Scholarly Projects
Practice Problem: Non-ventilator hospital acquired pneumonia (NV-HAP) is more common than ventilator acquired pneumonia. Oral care is the only modifiable risk factor for all patient populations.
PICOT: The PICOT question that guided this project was: In non-ventilated patients in a tertiary care setting (P), how does implementing an oral care bundle (I) compared to the current practice of individual tasks without a bundle (C) affect adherence to facility oral care standard of patients receiving oral care at least once a day (O) over six weeks (T)?
Evidence: Lack of an oral bundle that has been proven to decrease …

Observers Have Similar Improvements In Student Learning Outcomes As Participants In Athletic Training Simulation Education, Alma Mattocks
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones
The use of standardized patient (SP) encounters in athletic training education programs have become more common; however, due to time and space constraints, it is possible that not all athletic training students will be able to directly participate in engaging with the SPs and instead some must be observers. The objective of this study was to determine if student participants who observe a simulation encounter, experience similar improvements in student learning outcomes as students who directly interact with SPs during the simulation encounter.
A pretest/posttest, randomized controlled trial was utilized. Nine athletic training students volunteered to participate in the research …

EMET Projects
Integration of the arts into medical education has numerous benefits, including reducing burnout and producing empathetic physicians. Investment in arts-related activities has expanded considerably. However, funding remains a common limitation for further integration of arts into medical education. Clarifying student preferences and barriers to music programs can optimize such limited resources to best suit medical student needs.

EMET Projects
Introduction: It is critical to evaluate student experience with any newly integrated educational resource. In 2018, a Distal Upper Limb (DUL) Anatomy eModule was developed for first-year medical students at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, who have historically identified the DUL as a region of difficulty. This mixed methods study sought to (1) evaluate learner perception of the eModule relative to other resources, and (2) identify eModule content and features that students found valuable.
Methods: The DUL eModule was made available to first-year medical students in 2019 (n= 132), 2020 (n=131), and 2021 (n=131) as a voluntary, …

Boonshoft 50th Anniversary Oral History Project
Kristen Dilger interviews John Lyman, a graduate of the Boonshoft School of Medicine. He worked in emergency medicine until his retirement where he works part-time doing occupational health. Part of the class of 1980, Lyman discusses his collegiate career, including why he chose Wright State University's new medical college and talks about what it was like attending the college. He talks about the challenges and processes of attending a new medical college, and how attending the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine assisted him in his early career.
