Establishing The Content Validity Of A Student Pharmacist Patient Counseling Competency Assessment In Oncology, Matthew Newman, Emily Pherson, Bradley Burton, Eric C. Nemec

Physician Associate Studies Faculty Publications

Objective. The main goal of this project was to establish content validity and describe internal consistency of a patient counseling competency assessment instrument used to evaluate student pharmacists practicing in an oncology setting. Methods A modified e-Delphi panel of oncology clinical pharmacy specialists, clinical pharmacy generalists, and oncology pharmacy residents was employed. Iterative rounds of the e-Delphi process were conducted until consensus was reached on a majority of the instrument items. Consensus was defined as agreement by at least 75% of participants that an item was, or was not important. Internal consistency of defined sections of the instrument was determined …

Genetics And Genomics Education Among Physician Assistants, Wesley Patterson Aug 2022

Genetics And Genomics Education Among Physician Assistants, Wesley Patterson

All Dissertations

This dissertation comprises five chapters to describe genetics and genomics education among physician assistant/associate (PA) students and practicing PAs. Chapter I introduces the gap in supply and demand of genetic services, the need for non-genetics healthcare providers to fill the gap, and the PA profession as a solution.

Chapter II is a rapid literature review that summarizes the available literature regarding genetics and genomics education for PAs. A paucity of literature exists to describe the current state of PA genetics-genomics education. The few studies retrieved describe content being taught in PA programs, the number of genetics-genomics contact hours PA students …

OBSERVATIONS: We describe the COVID-19 Tele-Huddle Program, a novel approach to communication between key stakeholders in COVID-19 patient care through a daily video conferencing huddle. The program was implemented during a 4-week surge in COVID-19 cases at a large, academic medical center in Houston, Texas. Data collected during the COVID-19 Tele-Huddle Program included the type and number of interventions implemented, number of patients discussed, and …

Becoming A Doctor During A Pandemic: Impact On Medical Student Social Identity Formation, Sanghamitra M Misra, Nital P Appelbaum, Maria A Jaramillo, Ruifei Wang, Connor T Hoch, Nadia Ismail, Jennifer Christner

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

The COVID-19 pandemic required modifications to undergraduate medical education that likely affected medical students' social identity formation (SIF). SIF is shaped by experiences throughout the medical education continuum. This commentary explores factors potentially affecting medical student SIF during the COVID-19 pandemic focusing on students' perceptions of being part of the healthcare team, their role in medicine, and their engagement during the pandemic. Based on such considerations, we propose that educators should aim to design effective learning environments to support a full educational experience that encompasses acquiring medical knowledge and building strong social identities even during a pandemic.

Implementing Immersive Virtual Reality Into A Nursing Curriculum, Sue A. Schuelke, Krystal Davis, Sue Barnason

Innovations in Health Sciences Education Journal

Due to workforce demands, new undergraduate nurses are hired directly into fast-paced units and are expected to manage complex patients with rapidly changing conditions and respond to time-sensitive situations. It is important for nurse educators to prepare undergraduate nurses for transition into clinical practice upon graduation. Simulation has been a valuable tool to provide experiential learning and promote clinical decision-making. The next iteration of improving clinical simulation as an experiential learning modality for nursing students is Immersive Virtual Reality (IVR): a realistic, immersive simulation in a 3-dimensional environment that is experienced by body movements and hand controllers. IVR can incorporate …

Right Atrial Mass With Inflow Obstruction In A Patient With Igg4-Related Disease, Shek Joyce, Wu Lok Yi, Wong Chun Kit, Lu Jianlin, Lam Wai Lung William, Mak Wai Man Vivien, Chan Ngai Yin

Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology

Cardiac tumour is a rare cause of heart failure. We report a case of right atrial mass found in a patient with known immunoglobulinG4-related disease (IgG4-RD), who presented with right heart failure, renal impairment and thrombocytopenia. Multimodal investigations were performed to reach the diagnosis of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma with cardiac involvement. Chemotherapy was initiated in an attempt for disease control. We highlight the potential link between IgG4-related disease and lymphoma.

Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology

Myocarditis and Pericarditis have many virological and immunological causes. This article described the SARS-CoV involvement to the heart in children and adolescents, also the entity Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C), a rare but severe consequence of SARS-CoV2 infection. Hong Kong case definition of MIS-C was listed. The consensus from overseas experts was that MIS-C should be managed by multidisciplinary team with a structured long-term follow-up to monitor the functioning of various organs and ascertain the prognosis. The side effect mRNA vaccination causing myocarditis and pericarditis is also concern of paediatricians worldwide. Hong Kong published local epidemiology of acute myocarditis …
