Lessons Learned Creating Microbiology Laboratory Demonstration Videos, Marnie Imhoff, Linsey Donner

Innovations in Health Sciences Education Journal

Microbiology laboratory classes are designed to allow students to apply knowledge gained during lectures and become proficient in laboratory skills. Students are introduced to procedures for working with and identifying microorganisms. Instructors must prepare students to perform and interpret the necessary testing procedures to be successful. Laboratory demonstration videos provide students with a first-person, unobstructed demonstration on how to perform laboratory techniques. The videos can be used as a visual learning tool to supplement courses with an in-person laboratory session or as a component in online learning. This article describes the creation of instructional microbiology laboratory demonstration videos.

Unmasking Structural Racism In U.S. Medical Education: Advancing Equity For Underrepresented Medical Students, Daryl O. Traylor, Eboni E. Anderson, Destiney Kirby, Asia Nichole Hodges, Brianna Clark, Stephen Sinatra Jr. Jul 2023

Unmasking Structural Racism In U.S. Medical Education: Advancing Equity For Underrepresented Medical Students, Daryl O. Traylor, Eboni E. Anderson, Destiney Kirby, Asia Nichole Hodges, Brianna Clark, Stephen Sinatra Jr.

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

The COVID pandemic cast a harsh light on the structural and systemic health inequalities that exist in American society and in U.S. medical education. Black and Brown communities were disproportionately affected, and the pandemic highlighted the need for a diverse physician and healthcare workforce. Both the lack of equitable, high-quality healthcare in underrepresented communities and the obstacles that students who are underrepresented in medicine (URiM) experience in medical school are direct consequences of the structural racism that flourishes in U.S. medical schools and healthcare institutions. In this article, we explain structural racism and how it has manifested itself in medical …

OBJECTIVE: To examine differences in resident operative experience between male and female general surgery residents.

BACKGROUND: Despite increasing female representation in surgery, sex and gender disparities in residency experience continue to exist. The operative volume of male and female general surgery residents has not been compared on a multi-institutional level.

METHODS: Demographic characteristics and case logs were obtained for categorical general surgery graduates between 2010 and 2020 from the US Resident OPerative Experience Consortium database. Univariable, multivariable, and linear regression analyses were performed to compare differences in operative experience between male and female residents.

RESULTS: There were 1343 graduates from …

Playing Well With Others: Evaluating An Intervention To Prepare Students For Interprofessional Collaborative Learning, Kelli S. Fox Jul 2023

Playing Well With Others: Evaluating An Intervention To Prepare Students For Interprofessional Collaborative Learning, Kelli S. Fox

Social Work Faculty Publications

National trends in health care delivery focus on quality team-based care, patient safety, reducing costs and improving practitioner satisfaction (Interprofessional Education Collaborative, 2016). Health profession students, including social workers, are expected to be workforce ready for a complex interprofessional work environment. Educators are charged with developing effective ways to teach collaborative team skills as part of the curriculum (Rubin et al., 2018; Thistlethwaite et al., 2014). Educators across health professions recognize the importance of providing opportunities to immerse students in experiential, person-centered interprofessional teamwork to adequately prepare them for the workforce. (Cohen Konrad et al., 2017; Mokler, 2020). Planned interprofessional …

Ambivalence At 10 000 Feet, Marc Perlman Jun 2023

Ambivalence At 10 000 Feet, Marc Perlman

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

The transition from medical neophyte to seasoned physician is a gradual process spanning the course of many years. However, there are various milestones throughout the experience that capture increases in decision-making capacity and responsibility, such as the switch from pre-clinical to clinical medical education. Medical students in their clinical years are endowed with an abundance of knowledge from their pre-clinical years and are just beginning to synthesize and apply that information to patient care. “Ambivalence at 10 000 Feet” captures a reflection of a third-year medical student on the theoretical decision to provide emergency medical care in the absence of …

Strategies To Facilitate Professional Student Collaboration Focused On An Interprofessional Understanding, Nicole Trupiano, Tommy Lau, Kelsey Dods, Olivia S. Anderson

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose: Newer studies have suggested that interprofessional education (IPE) initiatives led by students can be successful in engaging their peers in IPE. Despite this, few studies exist that examine the student response to student-led IPE activities. The objective of this paper is to describe a student-led IPE program where health professional students learn from each other or from practicing health professionals through a seminar series. Method: Three seminars were arranged with presenters representing dentistry, dietetics, and occupational therapy. Student attendees completed a pre- and post-survey to analyze their interest, knowledge, and likelihood to collaborate with the profession featured in each …

Using Three-Dimensional Printed Models For Trainee Orbital Fracture Education, Martina Rama, Lauren Schlegel, Douglas M. Wisner, Robert S. Pugliese, Sathyadeepak Ramesh, Robert Penne, Alison Watson

Wills Eye Hospital Papers

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional printing is an underutilized technology in ophthalmology training; its use must be explored in complex educational scenarios. This study described a novel approach to trainee education of orbital fracture repair utilizing three-dimensional (3D) printed models as a teaching tool.

METHODS: Ophthalmology residents and oculoplastic fellows from multiple training institutions underwent an educational session on orbital fractures, learning through four different models. Participants analyzed orbital fractures through computerized tomography (CT) imaging alone and then utilizing CT imaging with the aid of a 3D printed model. Participants completed a questionnaire assessing their understanding of the fracture pattern and surgical approach. …

Barriers And Facilitators To Achieving Well-Being In Pediatric Providers, Whitney Marvin, Jillian Harvey, Natasha Ruth

Journal of Wellness

Introduction: Physician well-being has become increasingly important for health systems across the country due to the strong ties between quality, safety, and overall patient outcomes. Burnout has increased steadily and has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. This study seeks to successfully identify factors that both enhance and detract from well-being in a cohort of pediatric faculty and advanced practice providers (APPs).

Methods: This study utilized a multimethod approach including surveys and a total of 8 semi-structured, virtual focus groups of pediatricians and advanced practice providers (orchestrated through Microsoft Teams) to understand perspectives on burnout and well-being. Each …

School of Nursing Faculty Publications

The Southeastern Conference (SEC) Nursing Dean's Coalition is a purposeful alliance organized to collaboratively address several challenges that arose during the COVID-19 pandemic. Over the last three years, this strategic team of academic leaders has evolved from a crisis response team to a multidimensional support team, leveraging both individual and collective strengths, to provide several benefits to the dean members, as well as other SEC nursing faculty members, students, and institutions. Participation has grown from the original 12 deans to engage a broader team of associate deans and nurse leaders in faculty development, research, service, and diversity, equity, and inclusion. …

Using Physical Therapy As First Line Treatment For Sciatica Vs. Invasive Intervention, Christina Mohammed

Master of Science in Nursing Family Nurse Practitioner

Sciatica nerve pain affects a large part of the human population. Evaluation by a primary care provider and a referral to physical therapy as first line treatment, may help reduce sciatic nerve pain and result in reduced need for invasive surgical intervention.
