Purpose: To examine the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on surgical volumes of ophthalmology residents who completed training after 2020. Methods: Aggregated average case logs of primary surgeon and surgeon + assist (S+A) procedures for graduating ophthalmology residents in the U.S. between 2012 and 2023 were gathered from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Trends for primary surgeon and S+A procedures were assessed. The annual percent change in primary surgeon and S+A procedures was determined using linear regression to compare changes over three time periods: 2012-2019, 2019- 2020, and 2020-2023. Background: Applicants to ophthalmology residency programs have increasingly expressed interest in international surgical rotations. As such, ophthalmology residency program directors (PDs) have expanded international offerings to meet this desire but the true number of residency programs with international offerings is unknown. Methods: In February 2023, the official residency websites of all 125 accredited US-based ophthalmology residency programs were analyzed for any mention of international rotations. Websites were identified using a Google™ search by entering the program name and “ophthalmology residency.” All websites were surveyed for information regarding international rotations including the presence/absence of an international rotation and any additional information …

Objectives: To address the growing hazards to human health caused by the anthropogenic environmental catastrophe, academic curricula at all levels and disciplines, particularly medical education, should incorporate Planetary Health Education. This study aims to examine medical students' expectations and feedback on a Planetary Health elective in an Italian University.

Study design: Cross-sectional study, employing a convergent parallel mixed-methods design. Methods: Attendees were invited to take part in a mixed-methods written survey, integrating both quantitative and qualitative methodologies. Practice Problem: Brazilian immigrants in Florida face cultural and language barriers that hinder their ability to understand and engage with healthcare services. Randomized control trials (RCTs) are an essential pillar of scientific knowledge and medical practice, and their integrity has important implications for reliable systemic reviews and meta-analyses. However, the number of article retractions due to falsified data and scientific misconduct has increased in recent years. In response, the scientific community has pursued the creation of quality criteria that can be utilized to promote trustworthiness.

Methods

Background: Health-related programs frequently integrate interprofessional education (IPE) into their training. The COVID-19 pandemic transitioned many IPE programs online, making it essential to assess student expectations and perceived learning outcomes across virtual simulations and in-person settings.

Methods: This qualitative study compared student expectations and self-reported outcomes across in-person and virtual case scenarios at a Texas health science center. Responses to open-ended questions from two data collection periods were analyzed using inductive coding and thematic analysis.

Results: Students from nursing, medicine, dentistry, public health, and informatics participated in each group. Three major themes emerged from this study: communication, teamwork, and …

Background. Peptide citrullination and adduction with malondialdehyde-acetaldehyde adduct (MAA) are involved in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide antibodies are >90% specific for the diagnosis of RA, and MAA co-localizes with citrullinated proteins in RA synovial fluid. In addition, macrophages demonstrate increased expression of peptidyl arginine deiminase-2 (PAD2), an isozyme of PAD, in response to these MAA-adducted proteins. PAD catalyzes protein citrullination and may mediate the immunogenic transformation of synovial proteins and subsequent auto-antibody formation in RA. To explore the extent to which stigma permeates the field of psychiatry, this project, entitled “LABELED”, involved writing a series of structured poems for ten commonly stigmatized mental illnesses: anorexia nervosa, antisocial personality disorder, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, schizophrenia, and substance use disorder. The shortest poems in each set focus on stereotypes and first impressions commonly held about these disorders while the longer poems center around the identity of these individuals beyond their diagnoses. Large-scale events such as the College World Series (CWS) pose unique challenges for medical services due to high crowd density, prolonged event durations, and variable environmental conditions. This study aimed to assess the medical usage rate (MUR) and injury prevalence at the 2024 CWS to inform future event planning and emergency medical preparedness. A retrospective analysis was conducted using patient encounter data collected between June 14 and June 24, 2024. Data sources included Union Medical event services, which documented on-site treatments and dispositions, and Omaha Fire Department EMS records detailing prehospital care. Physician advocacy is defined as the use of professional expertise to address socioeconomic factors that affect health.1 In the USA, physician advocacy is recognised as a professional responsibility, and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education has even adopted competencies for post-graduate education. However, there is no consensus on how to incorporate advocacy training into undergraduate medical education.

Rethinking Systematic Review Assignment Design In Graduate Health Science Education: Librarians' Perspectives, Laura Lipke, Carrie Price Mls

Background: This article examines the problematic phenomenon of faculty assigning graduate health science students systematic reviews as semester-based assignments while expecting a health science librarian to be a willing support system for those students. Despite published conduct and reporting guidelines establishing that systematic reviews require a team, time, and methodological expertise, some faculty still turn to full systematic review assignments in the classroom. The authors propose applying cognitive load theory and chunking the systematic review process into manageable steps, allowing both faculty and students to better understand the required methodologies and to enhance educational outcomes.

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate physician perspectives of the current maintenance of certification(MOC) activities utilized by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG).

Methods: We performed a convergent mixed methods study, using parallel quantitative and qualitative data collected via the internet plus paper surveys of a nationwide sample of Obstetrics and Gynecology (Ob/Gyn) physicians from November 12 to December 13, 2024. The questionnaire included 23 items about various aspects of maintenance of certification, physician burnout and demographics. Three open-ended questions regarding the pros and cons of MOC and recommendations for improvement were also included.

Background: Chronic pain affects over 25% of U.S. adults and is a leading cause of disability. Mindfulness meditation (MM) is a nonpharmacologic approach to manage pain and improve well-being. Despite mounting evidence supporting its efficacy, MM remains underutilized in medical practice. Understanding physicians' engagement with MM and the barriers they face can inform strategies for integration into clinical care. This study assessed physicians' attitudes toward MM, including barriers to practice and their likelihood of recommending it to patients.

Interprofessional education (IPE) is an important component of health science training. Ensuring all students have access to necessary information prior to, during, and following simulation-enhanced IPE (Sim-IPE) activities is imperative to ensure a beneficial learning environment and student engagement. Ensuring access to necessary materials can be difficult due to differences in educational resources between institutions. This manuscript will assess the feasibility, acceptability, and satisfaction of using Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) as an educational tool for a Sim-IPE activity.
