Cannabis has been implicated as a risk factor for the development of schizophrenia, however, but the pathway of cannabis causing psychosis is not well understood. It appears that cannabis does not cause any structural changes per say but deficits in areas of the brain responsible for memory and emotion do show some changes. Recent studies suggest that cannabinoids such as CB1 have a pharmacological profile similar to that of atypical antipsychotic drugs. This mechanisms may involve dopamine, GABA, and glutamate neurotransmission; It is still not known if these changes are transitory or permanent, and whether or not they contribute to …

Purpose: The goal of the project was to determine why patients are being hospitalized repeatedly within an acute psychiatric facility. Past studies have found repeated hospitalization leads to economic drain, disability, poor outcome, stigma and discrimination. Repeated hospitalizations are one of the main causes of disability and dysfunction amongst the mentally ill as well as consuming more than 90 % of the mental health budget. This drain deprives consumers of a major part of allocated health resources. Test anxiety has been a problem for many individuals not only in the workforce, but also in many schools and colleges (Driscoll, Evans, Ramsey & Wheeler 2009). According to Driscoll et al., when compared to high school students and the general public (17%), nursing students are shown to have over double (55-60%) the rate of moderately high to high test anxiety. Cognitive test anxiety can account for a 7 to 8% drop in test grades, which can drop test score’s an entire letter grade (Cassady & Johnson, 2001). Changes In Student Attitudes Towards The Elderly Following A Hypertension Education And Screening Event, David William Martin

Objective: To assess student comfort levels and perceptions toward geriatric care after participation in a hypertension screening and education event, and to assess knowledge retention in the elderly participants.

Methods: This multiphase, survey based study evaluated pharmacy and physician assistant students' comfort levels and perceptions of the elderly. The study also used questionnaires to assess knowledge retention in the elderly at immediate, one-month, and three-month intervals.

Results: Student comfort levels significantly increased and perceptions remained unchanged after participation in the education and screening event. Elderly participant knowledge retention remained at around a 90% correct response rate.

Prompted by evidence that clinical simulations improve patient safety, team simulations are emerging in hospital settings. Accrediting organizations such as the U.S. Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (Joint Commission, 2004, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, 2002) have recommend simulation of obstetrical emergencies, including shoulder dystocia for hospital teams. National patient safety mandates for simulation training of critical events have not been available to small, rural hospitals because of lack of talent and equipment, creating a gap in resources. Objectives: This active learning experience was designed to enhance the information literacy knowledge and skills of medical students for patient-centered, evidence-based decisions at the point of care. It includes formulating clinical questions using patient/problem, intervention, comparison, outcome (PICO), accessing the highest level of evidence-based medicine (EBM) information available in an effective manner, and evaluating the information in relation to a specific patient in an outpatient setting.

Objective: To identify and compare awareness of intellectual wellness in male and female medical students of Karachi.

Methods: The cross-sectional questionnaire-based survey comprised randomly selected 800 medical students of both gender. It was conducted from January to December 2010 in 8 medical colleges of Karachi. Responses - never, sometimes, mostly and always (numbered 0-4) - were analysed in terms of frequency, proportion and percentages by Predictive Analysis Software version 18. Chi square test was applied for comparison of intellectual wellness in both genders. Results were considered significant at p <0.05.

Competing demands of work, family, friends, and the academic rigor while in an accelerated baccalaureate nursing program often lead to high levels of anxiety and may contribute to unsuccessful student progression. This phenomena is not unique to the UNLV School of Nursing but is an issue that nursing programs grapple with nationwide. While there is nursing research literature related to student success programs there are limited studies that describe the use of a Student Success Facilitator (SSF) coupled with a Student to Student Mentoring Program (SSMP). Dr. James Howard Snook was born in South Lebanon, Ohio in Warren County in 1879. He was both an alumnus and later a faculty member of the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. In 1922 Dr. Snook married Helen Marple and had a daughter. In 1926 Dr. Snook began an affair with an OSU medical student, Theora Hix. The affair lasted about 2 years. During a visit in 1929 Theora Hix allegedly threatened to harm Dr. Snook's wife and child. Dr. Snook murdered her and was sentenced to death in February of 1930.

The concept of caring has been identified with nursing since its professional organization. Several theories of caring have been developed and some adopted for instruction and implementation in nursing programs. This study’s aim was to identify caring attributes exhibited in a group of sophomore nursing students who had their maternity experience in a women’s prison. A focus group of six students responded in a semi-structured interview about their experiences with pregnant prisoners. The interview was recorded, transcribed and analyzed for Roach’s five caring concepts. The qualitative analysis revealed that sophomore nursing students manifested the caring concepts in their experience with …
