Course Description & Objectives
The Diabetes Immersion elective is a 2-credit hour course offered to pharmacy students in their 3rd year of pharmacy school.
- Demonstrate empathy regarding the impact of diabetes on everyday life.
- Demonstrate the ability to monitor blood glucose, count carbohydrates, inject “insulin”, and adjust insulin dose based on daily experiences.
- Discuss the impact of mental health and sociobehavioral/cultural aspects on diabetes.
- Develop and provide diabetes education to the community.

Background: Simulation-based learning is a popular training method in healthcare education. Literature supports multiple aspects of simulation-based training for technical skills and behavioral skills, however the effects of different pedagogies have not been investigated in this educational method.

Background
During the 2017-2018 academic year, a large private medical college underwent a complete transformation of its curriculum from a primarily lecture based, traditional format to an integrated, longitudinal format that included both time limited blocks and longitudinal threads of content. Wellness, conceptualized at both wellness of the provider and the patient, is one of the eight threads.
