Children who are unsupervised after school are most likely to get involved with activities that negatively affect their outcomes as an adult. This project seeks to engage children by adding value to an after school program. These programs help build lifelong skills. More specifically this focused on nutritional health of elementary school aged children.

Background
Pediatric Urgent Care (PUC) serves as a rich environment to teach outpatient pediatric acute care. 96% of PUCs host trainees, but only 4% host medical students.1 Constraints on clinical teaching slots2 necessitate the utilization of novel settings.

Fall 2017, the University of Kansas (KU) School of Medicine approached the Division of Urgent Care at Children’s Mercy Hospital (CMH) in Kansas City, Missouri to host 3rd year medical students as part of their pediatric clerkship.

The PUC became a new site for medical student education, necessitating the development of a new curriculum.

Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects

Trans and Gender Nonconforming children and adolescents make up an increasing percentage of today's youth. Many of their families, parents, and healthcare providers lack information on how to address the topic. Additionally, the lack of research in the field, and the ever changing definitions, can make it difficult to navigate and, as a result, there are several persistent myths and misconceptions. This project seeks to address these myths, the terminology as currently used, and local community resources from a patient and family perspective, specifically targeted at rural Vermont.
