Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this presentation, the possible role of computer graphics in macromolecular chemistry is demonstrated by reference to a molecular model building program running on a computer with a graphics console. The program was developed to pursue studies in protein configurations. A description of the program is given together with examples of the display produced.

THE condition known as pendulous crop occurs occasionally in a mild form in fowls, but the most commonly reported cases concern the classical symptoms that occur from time to time in turkeys.

The condition is also referred to as baggy crop, dropped crop, hanging crop and sour crop, and causes mortality, poor development and emaciation within turkey flocks in some areas.

Effects Of Poor Quality Diets With Various Dietary Factors Added And Exposure To Cigarette Smoke On The Voluntary Alcohol Intakes Of Albino Rats, Bonnie Emmerson

Studies were conducted utilizing albino rats to determine the relationship of voluntary alcohol consumption with various dietary additives and exposure to cigarette smoke in combination with poor quality diets. Male, Sprague-Dawley rats, from weanling age to 100 grams, were given the various experimental diets and a free fluid choice of ten per cent ethanol or tap water. Fluid intakes were recorded and analyzed statistically. Individual variation was common with a generally low level of alcohol consumption when rats were fed a poor quality diet of common United States foods. It is necessary to understand the pathophysiology of osteoporosis in order to cure or prevent it. This involves establishing normal standards of bone formation and comparing these with measurements in osteoporotics. Here the authors present data collected through more sophisticated techniques than have been available previously, and offer some conclusions as to their implications.

Intrathecal Cytosine Arabinoside In Hodgkin's Disease With Central Nervous System Manifestations, Ellis J. Van Slyck, Robert W. Talley

This report of the beneficial response in central nervous system (CNS) manifestations of a patient with Hodgkin's disease to the intrathecal administration of cytosine arabinoside suggests that this drug may have value in the treatment of CNS involvement by lymphoma and acute leukemia and of some brain tumors. Its use, for the first time via the intrathecal route in the present case, was well tolerated in two series of treatments.

Recent experiments at the Henry Ford Hospital indicate that a relationship exists between pulsation in the sinus node artery and impulse formation by the sinus node. This paper describes the experiments and presents anatomic, physiologic and pharmacologic evidence along with observations that should interest the physicist and mathematician, as well.

With the support of the professional staff, and the use of operations research techniques and the computer (IBM 360, Model 30) at the Henry Ford Hospital, the systems planning and development section of the administrative staff has been able to apply research data to the immediate problem of assigning hospital beds. This brief report describes purposes and results. Interested readers are referred to a more comprehensive analysis of the system available in reprint form.

Clinical And Histopathological Aspects Of Salivary Gland Tumors: A Review, Bruce N. Epker

A presumptive clinical diagnosis of salivary gland tumor can usually be made by taking an accurate history, performing a careful clinical examination, and utilizing essential radiographic and sialographic aids. Once a tumor is identified, differential diagnosis between benign and/or malignant involvement, and the exact tumor type becomes more formidable, frequently requiring histological diagnosis. Since optimum treatment is dependent upon an accurate differential diagnosis and surgical management according to tumor type, the clinical and histological aspects of salivary gland tumors are reviewed. A thorough knowledge of these characteristics allows an accurate diagnosis and provides the indications for proper treatment.

Standards for determining serum immunoglobulin (Ig) levels in infants and preschool children are now possible as a result of data compiled and presented in this paper. These can be compared with adult standards used in this hospital and presented in earlier issues of the MEDICAL JOURNAL. The Hospital's laboratory technique is compared with other methods for measuring IgM, IgA and IgG serum levels.

Careful analysis of 12 complicated cases of incarcerated femoral hernia gives clues toward the correct diagnosis of this problem. Knowledge of the symptoms can prevent dangerous delays in undertaking urgently-needed surgical repair. The unique anatomy involved requires careful clinical examination but surgery should not await x-ray studies.
