Experimental Evaluation Of The New Galen Disposable Bubble Oxygenator, Ung-Gill Jeong, Julio C. Davila

To assess the performance of the new Galen bubble oxygenator, two groups of 10 female mongrel dogs underwent three hours of total cardiopulmonary bypass. Adequate oxygenation and tissue perfusion as well as low hemolysis were demonstrated in both groups. Platelets were lower than the control in both groups due partly to hemodilution. Calculation of calorie transfer rate during cooling and rewarming demonstrated that the Bentley heat exchanger was more efficient. However, since water flow rate through this unit is limited, the net performance of the Galen was slightly better.

The middle-aged man whose case is discussed here harbored Type 7 Gaucher's disease in subtle form. This hereditary disorder was partly disguised by a long history of peptic ulcer. Still a third cause for anemia was eventually uncovered in a surprise conclusion. The major discussion deals with the clinical aspects, microscopic pathology, genetics, and biochemistry of Gaucher's disease and related sphingolipidoses.

This paper, accompanied by the discussions and the preceding introduction, was delivered May 9, 1974 as part of an anniversary celebration commemorating a half century of existence for the psychiatric unit at Henry Ford Hospital. Established in 1924 by the late Thomas J. Heldt, M.D., as a division of neuropsychiatry in the department of medicine, the unit is generally believed to be the first to be incorporated into a general hospital anywhere. It was - and is - conducted without physical restraints of any kind, without isolation of patients, and without segregation of men and women.

Metabolic alterations in bacterial hosts caused by virus infections have been studied for the last thirty years. The virulent T-even bacteriophages have been studied the most and have been shown to be responsible for the induction of a number of new, virus-specific enzymes that are necessary for successful phage growth. In addition, the activity of other host enzymes present prior to infection has been found to be increased by T-even infection. Temperate bacteriophages, being more difficult to work with than the virulent viruses, have not been studied as extensively. Bone Regeneration Over Submerged Dental Roots In Dogs, Roger Lee Plata

Nonendodontically treated roots were submerged 1.5 to 2.0 mm. below the alveolar crest in three dogs. Twelve roots were treated in this manner. Regeneration of alveolar bone can be seen in three weeks with complete bone coverage in five weeks. A complete lamina dura can be seen around the amputated roots.

Bone failed to regenerate over two of the twelve roots. In one case there was delayed healing due to the early loss of some sutures. A sinus tract developed connecting the oral environment with the contents of the pulp. This led to bone resorption and a necrotic pulp. In …

A preliminary light microscopic study of the mouse hind limb revealed a group of about 20 Pacinian corpuscles extending from the mid-region of the fibula to the tibio-fibular fusion strategically located for the possible sensing of bone-transmitted vibration.

The fine structure of the corpuscles is described in four stages: primordial or prenatal (19 and 20 days); early differentiation (1-8 days postnatal); differentiated corpuscle (9, 10, 12, 14 and 21 days postnatal); and adult (28 days old).

The corpuscles commence development during the 19th prenatal day. The corpuscle then consists of a nerve ending surrounded by sheath-cells which appear to be …

Histologic Comparison Of Apical Tissue Response To Endodontic Overfills With Gutta Percha And Grossman's Sealer Vs. Sargenti Method (N₂), Donald L. Brewer

This study compared endodontic overfills of N₂ and gutta percha-Grossman's Sealer from a histopathological basis. The study employed four male rhesus monkeys and a sample of 31 teeth.

The most obvious difference between the samples filled with N₂ and the gutta percha-Grossman's Sealer samples was the recurring presence of ankylosis in the N₂-treated teeth. Results also included bone necrosis, inflammation and root and bone resorption.

The N₂ samples were considered to have evidenced greater violence of reaction apically.

The consumption of alcohol is a problem not only in this country (U.S.), but also in many other places in the world. Thus we find the Indians in Peru, Bolivia and other neighboring countries (Ecuador and northern part of Argentina) consuming alcohol to the point that they become alcoholics, in addition to this they also chew coca leaves, plant from which cocaine is extracted.

In an effort to establish the cause for this behavior, we put Sprague-Dawley albino rats on either a poor or good basal diet. Once every other day the rats were injected with a solution of cocaine. …

A comparative study of micrometeorologic conditions on irrigated and non-irrigated pasture plots was conducted at Provo, Utah, from 1970 to 1972. Daily measurements were taken of the following: precipitation cither as rain or snow, new snowfall and total snow depth during the winter; relative humidity in a standard weather shelter; number of hours at maximum relative humidity; cloud cover each morning; potential evaporation; total wind 1 m above ground level; temperature extremes in a standard weather shelter; and temperatures both on irrigated and non-irrigated plots with sensing devices located 5 cm beneath soil surface under grass cover, at soil surface …

The heterogeneous nature of the collared lizards west of the Colorado River prompted this study. Samples from known populations of C. c. auriceps, C. c. baileyi, and C. c. fruscus were used as a base for defining the western populations. External morphology and cranial morphology were compared by cluster, canonical, and discriminant analyses.

Results of these analyses show a western complex of four populations which are distinct from the three base populations of the collaris complex. Members within the western complex are distinguishable with at least 90 percent reliability by discriminant analysis. Because of intergradation patterns seen in western Sonora, …

This study is a worldwide taxonomic treatment utilizing endomorphic characters such as cytology, histology, and embryology, in addition to the traditional exomorphic features. New chromosome numbers and histological information are reported. Relationships between Chloris and other genera in the Chlorideae are discussed. A total of 56 species is recognized in the genus; each is described and illustrated. Complete synonymies are included as well as a list of unidentified or rejected names. Distributions and maps are given for each species, along with lists of specimens examined during studies at various herbaria. Granuloma cell myoblastoma ofthe larynx is a relatively uncommon tumor. A review of the literature reveals only 52 cases reported. The lesion is a benign growth which is often asymptomatic, though most commonly associated with hoarseness. The treatment of choice is local surgical excision. Four successfully treated cases are reported. All four patients are Negro — three females and one male.

Two sex chromatin positive phenotypic males were found to have 46, XX karyotypes. Both had small testes and elevated gonadotropins with low testosterone levels. Semen analysis could not be obtained but one man claimed to have a daughter. In one patient, mosaicism was suggested by the finding in a single cell of a chromosome morphologically resembling a Y. A second cell line was not found in the other patient. Possible explanations for the development of a male phenotype in the absence of demonstrable Y chromosome include the existence of two cell lines or mosaicism, an autosomal sex determining gene and …

Use of refined instruments for the removal of an intra-abdominal foreign body has enhanced the indication for operative laparoscopy. In particular instances, laparoscopy has proven more advantageous than laparotomy. This case report illustrates removal of an intra-abdominal rubber catheter via a laparoscopic procedure with a double puncture technique.

Total correction of transposition of the great arteries and left ventricular outflow tract obstruction has become feasible in recent years. Certain modifications are needed, however, to improve the long term function of the valved conduit required in the procedure. A stented porcine xenograft valve, sutured into a woven Dacron tubular graft, was used successfully in the total correction of such a malfunction. The patient described is the first so treated at the Henry Ford Hospital. The main advantage of this technique is its practicality. Position-Dependent Pleural Friction Rub, Thomas L. Connolly

The art of physical examination is often forgotten by clinicians in their haste to depend on laboratory tests. This paper described a helpful way to diagnose pleurisy in someone who should have it according to the history. Auscultation of the chest in the supine and lateral decubitus positions will occasionally facilitate the detection of a pleural friction rub when conventional examinations may not do so. Two patients are described in whom this method was used.

A simple screening method, in which a bacterial mutant deficient in its ability to repair DNA, was used to detect genetic damage from a widely-used fungicide. The finding strengthens the suspicion that it may be a potent human carcinogen. The unique role of the physician in eliciting a history of exposure from a patient with cancer is emphasized in the case report.
