When Escherichia coli was grown in the presence of tungstate, inactive forms of two molybdoenzymes, nitrate reductase and formate dehydrogenase, accumulated and were converted to their active forms upon incubation of cell suspensions with molybdate and chloramphenicol. The conversion to the active enzymes did not occur in cell extracts. When incubated with [(99)Mo]molybdate and chloramphenicol, the tungstate-grown cells incorporated (99)Mo into protein components which were released from membranes by procedures used to release nitrate reductase and formate dehydrogenase and which migrated with these activities on polyacrylamide gels. The Metcalf-Hatch Act forces tax supported pounds and shelters to turn over unwanted cats and dogs to New York laboratories. This creates difficulties for shelters/pounds. People who are aware of Metcalf-Hatch (MH) will tend to abandon animals rather than risk having them recycled into labs. And this places additional tax burdens on communities for rounding up abandoned strays. The cost of stray animals is already $400 million a year in the USA.

Weight, height, and cannon bone measurements were obtained on 1,992 Thoroughbred foals. Colts were heavier than fillies at birth and the differences increased with age. Dams under 7 years of age and older than 11 years had foals of lighter weight at birth than mares 7 to 11 years of age and the differences persisted at 510 days of age. Foals born in April, May, or June were heavier than foals born in January, February, or March. Year of birth also influenced body weight. The trends for height at withers and cannon circumference were similar to those of body weight.

Lyb 5 is a B-cell alloantigen which is expressed on 50-60% of B cells. It was defined originally on the basis of cytotoxicity. We have described a new reactivity within the anti-Lyb 5 serum on the basis of selective inhibition of antibody responses in vitro by this antiserum in the absence of complement. This inhibitory activity of anti-Lyb 5.1 serum appears to be due to recognition of antigenic determinants different from the prototype antigens detected in the cytotoxicity assay. Anti-Lyb 5 serum incorporated into spleen cell cultures selectively inhibits antibody responses to a class of thymus-independent antigens (TI-2) previously characterized …

Staphylococcal protein A and several different immunoglobulins have been radio-labeled to high specific activities (> 106 cpm/pg) by reductive methylation with tritiated (3H) sodium borohydride. The proteins retain excellent functional and antigenic properties. The utility of these reagents in a variety of assays for cell surface antigens is illustrated. The results indicate that this radiolabeling procedure may become the method of choice for many cell surface and solution immunoassays.

The diving capabilities of Nerodia erythrogaster flavigaster and Nerodia fasciata confluens were investigated and the results were compared with similar studies on Nerodia rhombifera rhombifera and Elaphe obsoleta obsoleta (Baeyens et al., 1978). In addition, morphological and hematological parameters contributing to underwater survival were examined. The duration of underwater survival for N. erythrogaster and N. fasciata was approximately one hour with no difference between the species. The lung volumes of the two species were also similar but were significantly less than lung volumes reported for E. obsoleta. The major purpose of this study was to correlate certain personal characteristics of mothers and their offspring with the occurrence of toxoplasmosis serum antibodies in these women. As a byproduct, we determined the prevalence and incidence of toxoplasmosis in a particular subgroup of women in the Stockton, California area of San Joaquin County.

We had also hoped to provide early diagnostic services and follow up for any infected infants that we encountered. Unfortunately, follow up on these infants has been difficult largely due to the migrant habits of this particular group of seasonal farm workers. For these reasons this study …

Since the time of the introduction of the spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) into medical research, several neuropharmacological studies have been performed on these animals which have been unrelated to their cardiovascular systems. A few of these studies have indicated possible abnormalities in the dopaminergic systems of SHR. Therefore the present study was undertaken to examine more closely the sensitivity of SHR to stimulation of their dopamine (DA) receptors.

Neurospora produces a phase specific, cationic mucopolysaccharide composed primarily of galactosamine (GAG-MP) which becomes part of the cell wall and is later secreted into the media. Its appearance coincides with the onset of the restricted phase of growth and causes efflux of small molecular weight metabolites when incubated with conidial cells. This activity may be a product of electrostatic interactions of the GAG-MP with the conidial plasma membrane. The activity is blocked by acetylation of the primary amines on the molecule, digestion by enzymes that hydrolyze carbohydrate linkages and the inclusion of NaCl (lM) in the GAG-MP/conidia reaction mixture. An Ischemic Infarct In Medulla And Cervical Cord, Ezzatollah Shivapour, Gilbert B. Solitare

This report documents an unusual case of an occlusion of the anterior spinal artery of the medulla oblongata. The patient presented with involvement of the left accessory nerve and weakness of ipsilateral extremities. The diagnosis of an ischemic infarct in the distribution of the left proximal portion of the anterior spinal artery was made. Bulbar weakness, quadriplegia, and respiratory arrest developed. Postmortem examination, 23 days after onset, revealed an old infarct in the medulla which appeared as a more recent hemorrhagic infarct throughout the cervical cord.

This report describes intense uptake of 201Tl in a patient with histiocytic lymphoma. The activity seen was greater than with 67Ga. Use of 201Tl as an alternative imaging agent is advocated.

Mixed Connective Tissue Disease And Systemic Lupus Erythematosus In One Family, Michael R. Lubetsky, Howard Duncan

A mother with mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) and a daughter with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) were simultaneously diagnosed and treated in August, 1977. Multiple cases of SLE occurring in the same family are not rare, but the frequency with which systemic lupus erythematosus and mixed connective tissue disease occurs in the same family is not known, and the reports are few. This report describes these two cases and suggests that mixed connective tissue disease may be part of the spectrum of systemic lupus erythematosus.
