Allergenicity Of Various Peanut Products As Determined By Rast Inhibition, Julie A. Nordlee, Steve L. Taylor, R. T. Jones, John W. Yunginger

Extracts of 19 different peanut products and peanut oil were tested for their allergenicity by the radioallergosorbent test inhibition assay using a crude peanut extract from raw peanuts as the standard for comparison. Seventeen of the extracts were able to competitively inhibit the binding of serum IgE from peanut-sensitive patients with the solid-phase raw peanut extract. Peanut oil and the extract from hydrolyzed peanut protein did not inhibit binding, which suggests that these products are not allergenic. The peanut hull flour extract showed a slight ability to inhibit binding, suggesting that this product contains minor amounts of the peanut allergen.

Cryogenine's immunosuppressive activity was first evaluated by Kosersky, et al. (21) who, impressed by the drug's ability to inhibit both the irritant- and immune- mediated phases of adjuvant-induced polyarthritis (11), quantitatively confirmed this activity and clearly differentiated the action of cryogenine from that displayed by 6-mercaptopurine. A definitive study by Watson and Malone (22) confirmed cryogenine's lack of immunosuppressive capacity at effective anti-inflammatory dose levels.

The Vascular Laboratory of Henry Ford Hospital has used the Cranley-Grass Phleborheograph (PRG) as the primary noninvasive method to determine the presence or absence of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) in the lower limbs since December 1977. In order to determine its proper role and clinical reliability, we compared the diagnostic accuracy of phleborheography with contrast venography. From December 1977 through December 1978, 483 cases (963 limbs) were successfully examined by PRG. Ofthese, 111 cases (216 limbs) also had contrast venography. The PRG was confirmed as normal in 151 out of 157 (6 false negatives). There were 53 abnormal PRCs, with …

Hereditary hemolytic anemia associated with glucose phosphate isomerase (GPI) deficiency was first reported in 1967. Since then, about 30 cases have been reported in the literature; their ages ranged between 1 and 26 years. We present a case of glucose phosphate isomerase deficiency in a 56-year-old woman. Steroid therapy seemed to resolve our patient's acute stage. Since it has not been mentioned previously, further evaluation is necessary. Consideration of this deficiency may be helpful in investigating hemolytic anemia, regardless of the patient's age.

The intensity of the heart sound depends upon: 1) the distensibility of the aortic and pulmonary valves; 2) hemodynamic factors that cause the valves to distend and vibrate; 3) viscosity of the blood and its ability to inhibit diastolic valve motion; 4) the configuration of the aorta, pulmonary artery, and ventricle and the ability of the walls of the great vessels and ventricles to absorb or reflect sound energy; and 5) the capability of sound to be transmitted to the chest wall. It is possible that the best results of treatment for bleeding esophageal varices will come when a selective approach is used. In patients bleeding acutely and in patients with poor liver function shunt operations should be avoided, and a direct attack on the varices with either sclerosant therapy, percutaneous obliteration, or staple gun gastro-esophageal transsection should be carried out. In patients who have stopped bleeding, or those in whom elective treatment is being undertaken, the best operation at present appears to be selective distal splenorenal shunt.

A method of dissection followed by staining was initiated to allow physiological age- grading based on ovarian development in order to more completely describe the physiological development of adult female stable flies [Stomoxys calcitrans (L. )]. The gonotrophic developmental continuum from a non-differentiated cell in teneral females to mature eggs at the time of oviposition was first arbitrarily divided into six stages by using distinct landmarks within the developing oocyte . Fifty samples of Atriplex hymenelytra (Torr.) S. Wats, were collected from several different locations in southern Nevada and California to test variability in mineral composition. Only Na, V, P. Ca, Mg, Mn, and Sr in the samples appeared to represent a uniform population resulting in normal curves for frequency distribution. Even so, about 40 percent of the variance for these elements was due to location. All elements differed enough with location so that no element really represented a uniform population. The coefficient of variation for most elements was over 40 percent and one was over 100 percent. The proportion of …

An area of 0.46 km² divided into six zones in the northern Mojave Desert transitional with the Great Basin Desert has been studied. Diversity is high among the perennial plant species within the 0.46 km² area. Common species for the two deserts that are present in the area studied are Atriplex confertifolia (Torr. & Frem.) In desert plants, transpiration rates decreased before photosynthetic rates when plants were entering a period of water stress. This may have adaptive consequences. A difference of -5 bars in the soil-moisture potential had considerable importance in reducing the rate of transpiration. In Helianthus annuus L. (sunflower) the photosynthetic rate decreased before the transpiration rate in contrast to Great Basin-Mojave Desert plants, and the changes occurred with a -1 bar difference in soil-moisture potential. Objectives of this research were to (1) synthesize, and (2) evaluate new compounds which would be potential reactivators of organophosphate-inhibited acetylcholinesterase.

A series of 1,8-diazafluorenone and 2,2'bipyridylketone oximes and oxime methiodides were synthesized (11, 13, 14, 22, 24). These compounds were developed as structural analogs of 2-PAM (2-Pyridinealdoxime methiodide) and TMB-4 (1,1Trimethylene-Bis(4-formylpyridinium bromide)dioxime), the current drugs of choice for treatment of organophosphorous poisoning.

Acetylcholinesterase from electric eel was inhibited with DFP (diisopropylfluorophosphate), an irreversible-type inhibitor, and the inhibited enzyme was treated with the various reactivator compounds. The reactivation assays were monitored with pH stat apparatus, and the data were evaluated …

The decapod crustacean with a relatively well-defined visual system have contributed significantly to our understanding of visual neuron morphology and physiology. The general morphology of the optic lobes of several decapods were initially described by Parker (1897) and Hanstrom (1924). Olfactory bulb efferents sweep caudally over the prepyriform cortex in a broad fiber sheet called the lateral olfactory tract (LOT). The LOT begins as a compact sheet of fibers in the olfactory peduncle and narrows to a bundle caudally. It is the primary axonal pathway between the olfactory bulb and the cortex. The shape and cross-sectional area of the LOT was measured from histologic sections. The cross-sectional area diminishes to about half from rostral to caudal measurements. It has been previously demonstrated that 7,12-dimethylbenz(a) anthracene (DMBA) is an initiator of ovarian granulosa cell tumors. It is also known that DMBA leads to destruction of primordial oocytes, and that tumor induction may involve the interaction of pituitary gonadotropins. However, the effects of DMBA on ovarian steroidogenesis and uterine growth in relation to the tumorigenic process have not been investigated. Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide glycohydrolase (NADase) of bull semen is an extracellular, soluble enzyme capable of catalyzing the hydrolysis of the nicotinamide N-ribosidic linkage of NAD⁺. In search for a rapid, simple procedure for the preparation of this enzyme, it was found that Matrex Gel Red A (Amicon) column packing served very well as an affinity gel for NADase. The enzyme was applied to the Matrex Red A column (21 cm x 1.5 cm) in 10 mM sodium phosphate buffer, pH 6.0. Surprisingly, two fractions of NADase activity were obtained when the column was eluted with a sodium chloride …
