Detergent Extraction Of A Presumptive Gating Component From The Voltage-Dependent Sodium Channel, W J. Culp, D T. Mckenzie

A physiologically characterized radiolabeled neurotoxin complex obtained from venom of the scorpion Leiurus quinquestriatus has been used to identify detergent-solubilized presumptive sodium channel components in sucrose gradients. This toxin-binding component is found in extracts prepared from three sources of excitable membrane but appears to be absent from similar extracts prepared from nonexcitable membrane or from Torpedo californica membrane. Procedures that destroy the physiological activity of the Leiurus neurotoxin lead to a corresponding loss of toxin binding to the putative sodium channel component. The dynamics of epiphytic algae and phytoplankton were studied at a cypress stand in the Great Dismal Swamp, Virginia. Mean epiphytic algal biomass was 19.9 g m^-2 and mean planktonic biomass was 3.4 g m^-2.Nutrient concentrations in the epiphytic algae and the litter were determined. The algae had mean concentrations of 1.67% and 0.18%. They were found to immobilize as much as 0.5 g N m^-2 and 0.06 g P m^-2. This suggests that the algae are important as nutrient conservers. The phytoplankton were composed primarily of Bacillariophyceae. They exhibited a more or less …

A 29-year-old man is presented who developed intractable hiccups following a subarachnoid hemorrhage from a posterior fossa dural arteriovenous malformation (AVM). The hiccups persisted even after various treatments had been attempted, and the AVM had been excised surgically. The hiccups stopped after a bilateral phrenic nerve section was performed. This report reviews the central causes and mechanisms of hiccups and emphasizes the importance of selective vertebral angiography in demonstrating posterior fossa AVM.

Traumatic injury to the upper third of the neck, cephalad to the angle of the mandible, distorts the complexity of normal anatomy and underscores the importance of preoperative arteriography when possible. This report describes the case of a young man who was brought to the Emergency Room of our hospital suffering from a severe gunshot wound to the cervical spine, vertebral artery, and maxillofacial skeleton. His injury was successfully managed by combining a standard arterolateral incision with a procedure that has been described for exposing retro maxillary tumors. In an attempt to determine the efficacy of the polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) graft as a portacaval interposition shunt, 26 mongrel dogs were randomly selected to receive a side-to-side shunt with a 6 mm, 8 mm, or 10 mm PTFE graft after portal hypertension had been created by hepatic vein ligation. The dogs were clinically observed, and if they showed signs of graft occlusion, they were reexplored surgically. The 6 mm graft had a 0% patency rate; the 8 mm graft had a 28.6% patency rate; and the 10 mm graft had an 87.5% patency rate. Histological examinations revealed adequate incorporation of …

Atlanto-axial subluxation in patients with rheumatoid arthritis presents a difficult therapeutic problem. Because of their underlying disease, these patients do not tolerate the heavy orthotic devices or prolonged periods of immobilization associated with traditional methods of surgical fusion. This paper describes a surgical technique which allows early mobilization and minimal external fixation. The results from a series of ten patients in which this technique was used are also discussed.

A Role For Dentistry In Managing The Oro-Nasopharyngeal Irradiated Cancer Patient, Michael R. Britt

Radiation therapy for oral and nasopharyngeal carcinoma produces direct and indirect changes in the oral cavity. Before such therapy is begun, the cancer patient should be examined by a trained dental specialist so that associated problems such as oral mucositis, xerostomia, radiation dental caries, osteoradionecrosis, and ageusia can be addressed. During and after irradiation therapy as well, the dental specialist should be involved in the treatment program. In this way, it Is possible to maintain the patient's dental system through restorative measures, mandatory use of topical fluorides, dental rinses, and preventive prophylaxis.

Behcet's syndrome is a disease commonly found in Japan and in countries around the Mediterranean Sea. In the U.S., it is relatively uncommon. This report describes a 24-year-old Lebanese-American man with Behcet's syndrome who presented with symptoms four months after he developed arthritis and who had been initially diagnosed as having incomplete Reiter's syndrome. The gross structure and the neural arrangements in the optic lamina of crab Hemigrapsus nudus have been studied by light microscopy Golgi techniques and by electron microscopy. The lamina from distal to proximal is composed of a distinct cell layer, a fibular synaptic region, the plexiform layer, a spares cell layer, and the first optic chiasma. Golgi preparation of the lamina reveal four types of cells contributing to the lamina synaptic layer. An increase in dietary cholesterol and cholic acid will produce hypercholesterolemia in rats. For ten months, two groups of rats (six in each group) were fed commercial rat pellets (control group) or rat pellets plus cholesterol (1%) and cholic acid (0.25%) (experimental group). A blood sample from each animal was divided into three aliquots for three separate experiments on the erythrocytes: a membrane cholesterol and phospholipid determination, a 3-0-[¹⁴C] methylglucose (30MG) transport determination, and a 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3 DPG) determination. The urinary excretion of 3-Methylhistidine was used as an index of muscle catabolism in four groups of obese persons receiving a Protein Sparing Modified Fast (PSMF). The composition of the supplements were as follows: Group I: 75 g protein, 25 g complex carbohydrate (starch) per day; Group II: 25 g protein, 75 g complex carbohydrate (starch) per day; Group III: 75 g protein, 25 g simple carbohydrate (glucose) per day; Group IV: 25 g protein, 75 g simple carbohydrate (glucose) per day. For sometime, expansion of the maxillary arch, by means of surgical and mechanical procedures, have been acknowledged with minimal attention directed toward the mandible. In this pilot study a surgical technique was employed in separating the mandible, A-P, at the symphysis. The interosseous void, approximately 10 mm., was then filled with autogenous bone marrow collected from the greater trochanter and the crest of the ilium.

Duck plague virus causes a hemorrhagic disease affecting the family Anatidae, resulting in 60-80% mortality in captive flocks. Plaque and neutralization assays for Anatid herpesvirus (AHV) require 5-10 days for completion and are restricted by the seasonal availability of fertile duck eggs. The enzyme linked innnunosorbent assay (ELISA) is rapid and specific and avoids the use of living cells. The Holland strain of AHV was grown on duck embryo fibroblasts and purified by banding on CsCl gradients. The resulting virus was used to raise antisera in prebled New Zealand white male rabbits. An assay procedure for in vitro enzymatic methylation of mannnalian ribosomal RNA has been developed in this study. The assay procedure, utilized for the comparison of normal and neoplastic methylase activities (using mouse liver and Ehrlich ascites cells as sources of enzyme), is a modification of previously published methods (52,53). A 100,000 x g supernatant (SlOO) enzyme preparation was incubated with 28S-5.8S rRNA and tritium-labeled S-adenosyl-L-methionine. The RNA was extracted, applied to DEAE cellulose paper, washed, and the radioactivity counted. A silica gel-petroleum (SGP) medium was developed which is reliable, approximately the same cost as that of the corresponding agar-based petroleum medium, and can be made sufficiently firm to use in streaking or the spread-plate technique. Advantages of the medium include: the incorporation of all of the major ions of seawater in accordance with Dittmar's Law (the salinity of which can easily be varied from 0 to 35 parts per thousand); a wide workable pH range (5.5 to 11.6); negligable pH drift(~ 0.2 pH units after 166 days); the elimination of all but negligable amounts of syneresis, the ability to …

The Epidural Defect On Myelography: Some Unusual Causes, Keenan L. Carroll

This report describes four cases of epidural defect found on myelography that illustrate some unusual causes of this defect. These include a type I chondrosarcoma, primary hemangioendothelioma, hematoma, and an epidural abscess. Surgery was performed, and all four patients have recovered with little or no remaining neurological deficit. If there is anything unusual about the epidural defect or if the clinical findings do not agree with the radiographic films, the radiologist should be alert for other, less common causes of the defect.
