An Immunochemical Analysis Of Alcoholic Hyaline And Its Relationship To Keratin Intermediate Filaments, David L. Drexler Jun 1986

An Immunochemical Analysis Of Alcoholic Hyaline And Its Relationship To Keratin Intermediate Filaments, David L. Drexler

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Alcoholic Hyaline (AH) and keratin intermediate filaments possess ultrastructural, biochemical and immunochemical similarities. This study compares human AH, human stratum corneum keratin (HSCK) and normal human liver cytokeratin (HCK) by quantitative immunochemical means, using polyclonal as well as monoclonal antibodies. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) were employed, as well as "immunoblotting" and immunocytochemical techniques. HCK was isolated using Triton X-100 and "high-salt” buffers and exhibited seven major polypeptide bands on SDS-PAGE (41-58 kd). Antisera were made toward HCK and the two major HCK bands. Other immunochemicals included antisera toward AH, the three major AH bands, and HSCK, as well as 3 …

Effects Of Lateral Mandibular Expansion On Mandibular Morphology In The Growing Rat : A Comparative Study Of Treatment Effects With Orthopaedic And/Or Surgical Procedures, Eric Looi Jun 1986

Effects Of Lateral Mandibular Expansion On Mandibular Morphology In The Growing Rat : A Comparative Study Of Treatment Effects With Orthopaedic And/Or Surgical Procedures, Eric Looi

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of mandibular expansion by orthopaedic and surgical procedures in the growing rat mandible.

Sixty-four 35 day old Sprague Dawley Harlan rats were divided into four groups of 16 rats each and categorized as the control, orthopaedic expansion, surgery without graft and surgery with graft respectively. Prefabricated appliances were used for orthopaedic expansion of the mandibles and maintaining surgical expansion at the symphysis in the respective groups. Oxytetracycline were given intraperitoneally to mark areas of bone remodeling. Half the number of rats from each group were sacrificed at the end of …

Interaction Of Putative Estrogens And The Estrogen Receptor System In Leydig Cells In The Balb/C Mouse Testis Resulting In The Initiation Of Dna Synthesis, R. Lloyd Juriansz Jun 1986

Interaction Of Putative Estrogens And The Estrogen Receptor System In Leydig Cells In The Balb/C Mouse Testis Resulting In The Initiation Of Dna Synthesis, R. Lloyd Juriansz

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Continuous administration of estrogens for 7-9 months, both steroidal and nonsteroidal, to male BALB/c mice, leads to the formation of testicular Leydig cell tumors. Three days following the subcutaneous implantation of a pellet of estrogen in cholesterol, there is a peak in the incorporation of 3H-tymidine into the DNA of the interstitial cells. These effects are hypothesized to be mediated by the estrogen receptor system in the Leydig cell. Common experimental techniques for the measurement of hormone binding, such as dextran coated charcoal treatment, proved to be impossible to employ in this system, therefore a procedure was developed using …

The Effects Of Strain Differences On The Binding Of Concavalian A To Mouse Sperm, Lisa A. Mckay Jun 1986

The Effects Of Strain Differences On The Binding Of Concavalian A To Mouse Sperm, Lisa A. Mckay

Honors Theses

The current study, lectins were used as genetic probes to determine the phenotype of the sperm from different strains of mice. Lectins are proteins of non-immune origin, which bind to specific carbohydrates (McCoy, 1986). Being that virtually all cell membranes contain carbohydrate components, lectins have been used to identify all types of cells. In this study, a biotinylated lectin Concavalian A (Con A) derived from Canavalia ensiformis, was used and binding was detected using an avidin-biotin peroxidase (ABP) complex technique. The object of the current research was to 1) determine if mouse strain differences have an effect on lectin binding, …

Descriptive Ethology And Activity Patterns Of Black-Footed Ferrets, Tim W. Clark, Louise Richardson, Steven C. Forrest, Denise E. Casey, Thomas M. Campbell Iii

Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs

Aspects of the aboveground ethology and activity patterns of the black-footed ferrets (Mustela nigipes) are described for a population in northwestern Wyoming as a first step in building a descriptive ethogram and quantification of activity patterns. We observed at least 237 individual ferrets for 208 hr on 441 occasions from 2 December 1981 through 25 September 1984. Mainenance behaviors (locomotion, alert, grooming, and sunning, defecation and urination, digging, and predation) and social behavior (reproduction, ontogeny, maternal, play, agonistic) are described as well as some ferret-human interactions. Ferret vocalizations are subjectively described. We located ferrets during most months including …

The Effects Of Luteinizing Hormone And Adenosine 3',5'-Cyclic Monophosphate On Phospholipid Metabolism By Luteal Mitochondria, Jim John Sadighian Apr 1986

The Effects Of Luteinizing Hormone And Adenosine 3',5'-Cyclic Monophosphate On Phospholipid Metabolism By Luteal Mitochondria, Jim John Sadighian

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

Luteinizing hormone (LH) increases intracellular concentrations of adenosine 3', 5 '-cyclic monophosphate and the phosphoinositides, phosphatidylinositol (PI), PI 4'-phosphate (PIP) and PI 4' .5 1 - bispbosphate (PIP2). It is believed that cAMP and the phosphoinositides act concertedly to regulate mitochondrial conversion of cholesterol to pregnenolone. This study examined the effects of LH and N6 ,O2 -dibutyryl cAMP (dbcAMP) on phospholipids metabolism by luteal mitochondria and the influence of dbcAMP and the phosphoinosi tides on mitochondrial steroid production. Mitochondria were isolated from unincubated and incubated luteal tissue by differential centrifugation. Phospholipids were extracted from the mitochondria …

Magnesium, Copper And Zinc Concentrations In Blood From Children With Diabetes Mellitus, Linda Lowers Jenkins Apr 1986

Magnesium, Copper And Zinc Concentrations In Blood From Children With Diabetes Mellitus, Linda Lowers Jenkins

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

Trace element levels in blood from diabetic children were investigated and compared to control children. Plasma, erythrocyte, mononuclear and polymorphonuclear cells were analyzed for magnesium, copper, and zinc content. Leukocyte separation was performed by density gradient centrifugation on Ficoll-Hypaque, followed by washing steps to remove platelet contamination and hypotonic lysis to remove red cell contamination. Polarized Zeeman-effect atomic absorption spectroscopy was used for trace metal analysis.

Decreased plasma magnesium levels were observed in the diabetic children. This finding is well documented and probably due to increased urinary magnesium loss from glycosuria. Lymphocyte magnesium levels in the diabetic children were also …

Recovery Following Acute Pontine Hemorrhage, Janice M. T. Redmond, B. K. Ahmad Mar 1986

Recovery Following Acute Pontine Hemorrhage, Janice M. T. Redmond, B. K. Ahmad

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Massive pontine hemorrhage does not always carry a fatal prognosis. A case report is presented in which many of the features usually associated with a fatal outcome were seen: severe disturbance of consciousness with early onset of coma, decerebrate posturing, systolic BP ranging from 200 mm Hg to 250 mm Hg, and hypopnea. Intensive supportive therapy was instituted during the critical phase, and the patient recovered. Electrophysiological studies helped to define the neurological deficit.

The Phenomenon Of Multiple Stretch Reflexes, Robert D. Teasdall Mar 1986

The Phenomenon Of Multiple Stretch Reflexes, Robert D. Teasdall

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Multiple stretch reflexes occur in muscles adjacent to or remote from the tap. The response may be ipsilateral or bilateral. These reflexes are encountered not only in normal subjects with brisk stretch reflexes but particularly in patients with lesions of the upper motor neuron. The concussion obtained by the blow is conducted along bone to muscle. Muscle spindles are stimulated, and in this manner independent stretch reflexes are produced in these muscles. This mechanism is responsible for the phenomenon of multiple stretch reflexes. The thorax and pelvis play important roles in the contralateral responses by transmitting these mechanical events across …

Muscle Pathology In Total Knee Replacement For Severe Osteoarthritis: A Histochemical And Morphometric Study, Mark A. Glasberg, Janet R. Glasberg, Richard E. Jones

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

We evaluated a series of 12 biopsies from 11 patients with total knee replacements for severe osteoarthritis. All 12 biopsies showed denervation atrophy, while five cases had significant myopathic changes. Morphometric studies indicated a positive atrophy factor (greater than 150) in the type I myofibers in seven cases, the IIA myofibers in nine cases, and the IIB myofibers in all 12 cases. Type I predominance occurred in six cases, IIA paucity in two cases, and IIB paucity in two cases. The results indicate that patients with severe osteoarthritis of the knee have both significant neuropathic and myopathic changes in quadriceps …

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Innovative developments over the past 15 years have resulted in increased sophistication and effectiveness of therapeutic neuroembolization procedures. As a result, percutaneous transcatheter embolization has assumed an increasingly important role in the management of patients with vascular lesions of the head, neck, and spine. By reducing bleeding during surgery, this technique can markedly facilitate the surgical approach to difficult vascular lesions. The technique may also be applied in cases where surgery is contraindicated. Therapeutic neuroembolization has been performed in 23 patients with vascular lesions of the head, neck, or spine at Henry Ford Hospital. Devascularization of the extraaxial blood supply …

The Effect Of Sta-Mca Bypass On Regional Cerebral Blood Flow In Ischemic Foci, Wendy M. Robertson, K. M. A. Welch, James R. Ewing, James I. Ausman, Fernando G. Diaz Mar 1986

The Effect Of Sta-Mca Bypass On Regional Cerebral Blood Flow In Ischemic Foci, Wendy M. Robertson, K. M. A. Welch, James R. Ewing, James I. Ausman, Fernando G. Diaz

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

The effect of STA-MCA bypass on regional cerebral bloodflow (rCBF) is unclear Since asymmetries of rCBF have previously been shown to identify the focus of maximal cerebral ischemia, a study was performed to assess the effects of surgical revascularization on rCBF in this focus. Sixteen candidates for STA-MCA bypass were studied preoperatively and postoperatively. The rCBF vms measured by the '"Xenon inhalation technique with eight contralateral probe pairs. The probe pair with the maximal percentage difference in initial slope index (ISI) was identified and corresponded to the clinically involved hemisphere in 14 patients. Following surgery, the ISI increased in the …

Psychocardiologic Perspectives Of Coronary Artery Disease, Richard Ketai Mar 1986

Psychocardiologic Perspectives Of Coronary Artery Disease, Richard Ketai

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

The importance of mind, emotion, and behavior as they relate to the heart, particularly coronary artery disease, is growing in recognition. A review of the research shows increasingly sophisticated demonstrations of links unifying heart function and mind. "Psychocardiology" would be an appropriate term for the diverse areas of interest which focus on the psychosocial correlates of heart disease. This paper illustrates this concept through a review of psychosocial and behavioral aspects of coronary artery disease.

Intussusception Of The Appendix And Endometriosis, Roberta E. Sonnino, Mohammed R. Ansari

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Intussusception of the appendix, though uncommon, is usually diagnosed during surgery. Endometriosis in an intussuscepted appendix is rarely described. A case of appendiceal intussusception of a rare morphologic type associated with endometriosis is presented, and the literature is briefly reviewed. Etiology, classification, and diagnosis are discussed.

Anti-Hla Antibodies Complicating Infectious Mononucleosis With Thrombocytopenia And Neutropenia, Warren L. Kupin, Maria Sawdyk Mar 1986

Anti-Hla Antibodies Complicating Infectious Mononucleosis With Thrombocytopenia And Neutropenia, Warren L. Kupin, Maria Sawdyk

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

A case concerning a 21-year-old male college student with thrombocytopenia and neutropenia complicating infectious mononucleosis is presented. Although the patient had no prior history of alloimmunization, a broad spectrum anti-HLA antibody was strongly positive in his serum. Concomitant with resolution of the hematologic abnormalities, the titer of the antibody diminished. This case is unique both in the severity of the thrombocytopenia and neutropenia and for the circulating HLA antibody most likely of viral origin.
