Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this study, a double antibody enzyme immunoassay for the direct determination of testosterone in plasma was developed. Testosterone 3-O-CMO was conjugated with horseradish peroxidase by the mixed anhydride method, and the conjugate purified by column chromatography (sephadex G-25). Testosterone antibody was obtained by immunization of rabbits against Testosterone-3-O-CMO-BSA. Cross reactions of the antiserum against some steroids were found to be

This study was conducted on sheep and goats to investigate theileriosis and tick infestations around Kayseri between August 1997 and October 1999. During this period a total of 300 small ruminants consisting of 250 sheep and 50 goats were microscopically examined for Theileria species. Blood smears were prepared from the punctured ear of each animal for microscopic examination. At the same time, ticks were collected from the animals. The smears were stained with 5% Giemsa's stain solution and then examined under microscope with oil immersion objective. Theileria sp. were detected in 46 (18.40% ) and 4 (8.00% ) of the …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this study, which was conducted to detect the critical control points and to investigate the direct and cross-contamination sources in white pickled cheese production, 21 control points were examined for aerobe mesophilic counts, staphylococcus-micrococcus, coagulase-positive staphylococcus, enterobacteriaceae, coliform bacteria, E. coli, enterococcus, yeast and mould counts. It was determined that the high microbiological load of raw milk affected the microbiological quality of pasteurized milk negatively, and that the production pipe-line after pasteurization, and equipment such as vats, plastic wraps, pressing cloths, starter culture and the hands of the workers, were direct contamination sources. In addition, the hands of workers …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this research the fatty acid composition of different tissues of mature trout caught from Yeşildere creek in the Fırat region were investigated. In the adipose, gonad, liver and muscle tissues, the differences among the percentages of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3, n-6 PUFA) and the eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)/decosahexaenoic acid (DHA) ratio were statistically significant (P < 0.01). However, the differences in the saturated fatty acids (SFA) of tissues were not distinctive. The most important fatty acids were palmitic (16:0), stearic (18:0) and miristic (14:0) in SFA and 18:1 n-9 and 16:1 n-7 in MUFA. The ratio of n3/n6, known as characteristic agents of marine fish, was as high as in marine fish but the differences among the tissues were not significant.
