Weighing data from 389 broiler carcasses and parts formed the research material. The carcasses were divided into 6 different groups according to their weight. Cutting up shrinkage and percentage rates of the parts in the total weight were determined. Gross and net changes in enterprise income were determined according to the summer and winter prices of the whole body and parts. It was determined that cutting up caused a 4.03% net increase in enterprise income at summer prices and a 0.91% net increase at winter prices. The purpose of the present study was to determine the distribution of cells containing glucagon (A), insulin (B), and somatostatin (D) in the goose pancreas. Small pieces of tissue from 5 adult geese (Anser anser) pancreases were dissected under deep ether anaesthesia. Sections were stained with Crossmon's connective tissue stain for general observations and Gomori's method for pancreatic islet cells. Sections were further processed for standard immunohistochemical techniques using the avidin-biotin-complex method for the distribution of A, B and D cells. Twenty-five young budgerigars that died with the complaints of abdominal distension and crop swelling were examined pathologically. One hundred and twelve, 8-19-day-old chicks died at the same aviary with the same clinical symptoms over 16 months; the morbidity and mortality rate was 100%. Ascites, hydropericardium, crop and oesophagus ulcers, cardiomegaly, splenomegaly, hepatomegaly and focal hepatic necroses were the predominant necroscopic findings. The histopathological examination revealed characteristic intranuclear inclusion bodies in the liver, kidney, spleen, lung, oesophagus, crop, brain, pancreas, heart, gut, thymus and bone marrow. A young dog was examined because of regurgitating at the time of weaning to solid food. The dog was thin, underweight and had a sparse hair coat and distended abdomen. The cervical oesophagus was palpable as a flaccid, air-filled tube in the neck. Cardiac murmurs were not detected on auscultation of the thorax. A test meal of dog food was given and the dog regurgitated masticated, nondigested food a few minutes after eating. A 1-year-old cat with a suspected abortion was brought to the clinic of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ankara University. The cat was examined because of a reoccurrence of a bloody vaginal discharge. Failure to detect a foetus by ultrasonography and the presence of an anechoic zone in the uterus revealed that there had not an abortion. Since the anechoic zone was large, it was thought that a pharmacological approach would not be successful. Meningitis Associated With Brucella Abortus In An Aborted Bovine Foetus, Cengi̇z Çeti̇n, İ. Taci̇ Cangül, Mehmet Akan, Ebru Özel, Ahmet Akkoç

In this study, the brain and other organs from an aborted bovine foetus were examined histopathologically and microbiologically. In addition, a serum sample from the aborting cow was examined serologically. A granulomatous inflammation, characterised by the infiltration of lymphocytes, plasma cells with some neutrophils and macrophages was observed in the meninges of the brain, liver and kidney. Brucella abortus biovar 1 was isolated in pure culture from the brain and other organs. The serum sample was positive for brucellosis. These findings indicate that Brucella abortus is a pathogen capable of inducing meningitis in bovine foetuses.

A 1-year-old male German Shepherd dog was brought in because its hard palate had been damaged by the left mandibular canine tooth. On inspection of the oral structure, lingual deviation to the interproximal area between the upper canine and lateral incisor of the left mandibular canine tooth and mild palatal trauma were seen. Feeding Biology Of Silurus Glanis (L., 1758) Living In Hirfanlı Dam Lake, Ni̇hal Doğan Bora, Ali̇ Gül

Stomach contents and feeding features of Silurus glanis living in Hirfanlı Dam Lake were investigated. Recognizable organisms were found in the stomachs of 91 Silurus glanis out of 162 caught between September 1996 and August 1997. The stomach contents of Silurus glanis and their levels were as follows: Gammarus (21.87%), Odonata (19.79%), Sander lucioperca (19.79%), Tinca tinca (18.76%), Silurus glanis (1.04%) and Gastropoda (1.04%). In addition, it was noted that 1.04% of the organisms found in the stomachs of Silurus glanis were Homoptera and 2.08% were the parasite Platyhelminthes.

A 27.2 kb plasmid in Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis ELL23, a 32.7 kb plasmid in L. lactis subsp. cremoris ELC5 and a 31.1 kb plasmid in L. lactis subsp. cremoris ELC19 were found to determine exopolysaccharide production (Eps^+) and lactose fermentation (Lac^+) abilities at the end of conjugal transfer studies. Conjugal transfer frequencies (per donor cell) and stability rates of Lac^+/Eps^+ plasmids were determined as 1.0 x 10^{-2 }- 2.8 x 10^{-3} and 80-96%, respectively, after conjugal matings between the aggregative (Agg^+) wild type strains and Agg^+ recipient strain L. lactis subsp. lactis LLT40. For this purpose, 61 ground beef samples purchased from 15 different butcher's shops and 3 supermarkets in Aydın province in Turkey were examined between June 2000 and January 2001. A cytogenetic investigation on 12 Garra rufa (Heckel, 1843) specimens, from Müftü stream, was carried out by a slight modification of the conventional air-dried technique, using gill epithelial cells. The diploid chromosome number of this species was 2n = 44, comprising 22 metacentric and 20 submetacentric chromosomes and 2 acrocentric chromosome carrying satellites (NF = 85). A haploid idiogram, based on the chromosome measurements, was prepared. A detailed standard karyotype of G. rufa was established for the first time in this study.

We investigated the effects of drop volume on the development of mouse presumptive zygotes to the completely hatched blastocyst stage. For this aim, we established 3 experimental groups. In the first group, we cultured hybrid presumptive zygotes to the hatched blastocyst stage in 10 presumptive zygotes per 5, 10, 20, 40 and 50 µl drops. Milk progesterone level is a good marker to evaluate the functional status of the corpus luteum in all farm animals. The present study was conducted to monitor changes in milk progesterone concentrations at the time of oestrus and post-mating for diagnosing early pregnancy in Anatolian water buffaloes. Twenty-one buffaloes reared at the Kocatepe Agricultural Research Institute, Afyon, Turkey, were used. The types and rates of acrosome and other (head, mid-piece and tail) abnormal spermatozoon types were determined by the Spermac® staining technique. Semen from 5 stray tom cats under the same management conditions was used. Semen collection was performed under general anesthesia by electro-ejaculator once a week for 5 weeks. After ejaculation the semen was diluted by 100 µl of 0.9% NaCl solution and stained with Spermac® stain for morphological evaluation. Sixty-three samples of cheese consisting of 23 White cheeses, 14 Kaşar cheeses, 11 Tulum cheeses, 9 Civil cheeses and 6 Lor cheeses (whey-curd), were analyzed for the occurrence of aflatoxin M_1 (AFM_1) using enzymatic immunoassay. In 28 of 63 samples (44.44%), the presence of AFM_1 was detected in concentrations between 7 ng/kg and 202 ng/kg. The mean levels of AFM_1 were 28.08 ng/kg in White cheeses, 22.80 ng/kg in Kaşar cheeses, 74.05 ng/kg in Tulum cheeses, 12.32 ng/kg in Civil cheeses and 15.95 ng/kg in Lor cheeses.

Regional impacts of agricultural policies have emerged as a key concern in Turkey for both domestic reasons and because of Turkey's desire to join the European Union. This study uses a spatial equilibrium model to analyze the regional impacts of 2 alternative dairy support policies that are currently being considered: a price premium policy and a target price/deficiency payment policy. Both policies are found to exacerbate the post-1980 trend toward a greater share of milk produced in the more prosperous western regions of Turkey. Cat semen was extended with 3% and 4% glycerol containing Tris extender and frozen in (0.25 ml) straws. Spermatological characteristics were examined in post-thaw semen samples. Five tom cats aged 2-3 were used. Semen was collected by electro-ejaculator under general anesthesia (xylazine-ketamine HCl combination). Body fat composition and growth performance of sea bass juveniles fed with different kinds of vegetable oils instead of fish oil were studied. Feeding trials were carried out with 600 sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) juveniles with on initial live weight of 7.58 ± 0.13 g. Experimental feeds contained fish oil, soybean oil, sunflower oil, corn oil and olive oil. The morphology of Heligmosomum costellatum, a nematode of field mice (Microtus epiraticus), was described by scanning electron microscope. The scanning electron microscopic view of this nematode revealed that the anterior end was surrounded by 2 cephalic vesicles. The 2 copulatory spicules of the male were enveloped in membrane and the male bursa was large. The female posterior end was characterized by a caudal spine. The body of this parasite had transverse ridges.

Phylogenetic relationships in some Turkish dog breeds were investigated to determine protein polymorphisms by electrophoretic analysis. Blood samples were collected from 276 dogs including the Kangal, Akbash and German Shepherd as well as Doberman Pinscher, Setter, Pointer and Labrador breeds. Enzymes and proteins were separated electrophoretically using isoelectrofocusing gel, starch gel and polyacrylamide gel. Polymorphism on albumin (Alb), postalbumin-1 (Poa-1), postalbumin-3 (Poa-3), transferrin (Tf), and esterase (ArE) loci was detected, while no polymorphism was observed on the hemoglobin (Hb) locus. The aim of this study was to determine the presence of Listeria monocytogenes, Yersinia enterocolitica and Salmonella enteritidis in 123 liquid whole quail eggs. The method suggested by USDA-FSIS was used for the isolation and identification of L. monocytogenes. The cardiopulmonary and clinical effects of the infusion of pentobarbital sodium in combination with fentanyl for long-term anaesthesia in 9 pigs were investigated. Pigs were premedicated with i.m. atropine at a dose of 0.05 mg/kg and azaperon at a dose of 2 mg/kg. General anaesthesia was induced with i.v. thiopental sodium at a dose of 3.3 mg/kg. After induction of anaesthesia, the pigs were intubated and supplied with oxygen during anaesthesia. This study was undertaken to investigate the Cu, Zn, Ca, P and Mg levels of blood serum and the Cu and Zn levels of wool from clinically healthy Chios ewes grazed in meadows in the Aydın region. A total of 100 blood and wool samples from various villages in different districts of Aydın (Germencik, Yenipazar, Çine, Koçarlı and the central district) were studied. This research was carried out to determine the effects of vitamin E (DL-a tocopheryl acetate) supplementation on inter- and intramuscular fatty acid composition in the meat of Morkaraman lambs. The lambs were divided into 2 groups, control (CG, n = 10) and experimental (VG, n = 10), at the beginning of the fattening period. The CG and VG lambs were fed the same concentrate and hay. The reproductive activities of Silurus glanis were investigated over 12 months in Menzelet Reservoir, in the East Mediterranean region of Turkey. Total length of the examined 245 S. glanis varied from 33.4 cm (220 g) to 195.0 cm (48,000 g), and age distribution ranged between 1 and 14. Observations on the seasonal distribution of the maturity stages and variations in the gonadosomatic index (GSI) confirmed that Silurus glanis has a prolonged spawning period extending from the beginning of June to August. The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of producing chimeric bovine embryos by reaggregating blastomeres of disaggregated day 4 bovine embryos. Oocytes were obtained from a slaughterhouse. Selected oocytes were matured, fertilized and cultured in vitro. Fertilization day was taken as day 0. Blastomeres of day 4 embryos were disaggregated and then pooled together. Chimeric embryos were randomly constructed by reaggregating blastomeres in empty zonae pellucidae.
