Provider recommendation of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination among adolescents has steadily improved over the years, however, limited research has been conducted to examine if the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted this positive trend in parent-reported provider recommendation among minority adolescents. Therefore, we conducted the present study to determine if there is an association between the pandemic and parent-reported provider recommendation of HPV vaccine among non-Hispanic black and Hispanic adolescents. Problem: The opioid epidemic is magnified by excessive post-surgery prescriptions. Over six months at an orthopedic spine practice, 50% of patients received two or more opioid refills beyond their first. This highlighted the absence of a clear prescribing policy and emphasized the need for a structured protocol and to promote patient safety.

Aim of the Project: The primary aim was to implement a prescribing protocol to lower opioid refills provided to post-surgical patients in this surgical practice. The desired result was to reduce the number of opioid refills provided to patients after surgery.

Background:

Revaccination after hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) is critical to prevent morbidity and mortality from vaccine preventable illnesses. While earlier re-vaccination after HCT is desirable, they may be ineffective if deployed before partial reconstitution of adaptive immunity. Increasingly, personalized approaches to re-vaccination after HCT have replaced time-based protocols in order to minimize unvaccinated time and enhance vaccine effectiveness. Furthermore, for revaccination to be maximally beneficial, compliance with, and timely delivery of the complete revaccination schedule is imperative, but rare, and there is little data on strategies to optimize vaccine delivery.

Background: In 2020, CDC established new guideline expanding Hepatitis C virus (HCV) screening to all adults aged 18 to 79 years. Our QI project objective is to enhance HCV screening amongst the UTRGV-DHR IM department by establishing suitable reminders and educational sessions.

Methods: We reviewed HCV screening status of all adult patients 18 to 79 years old from June 1^st 2020 to December 1^st 2020. Introduction: Despite unprecedented telehealth adoption during the COVID-19 pandemic, its post-pandemic preservation remains uncertain. Understanding key stakeholders’ perspectives on telehealth during the pandemic can inform evidence-based policies and promote effective, sustainable virtual-based care.

Methods: Patients and providers who completed telehealth visits during the early pandemic in primary care, subspecialty, and surgical outpatient clinics at a large community-based academic medical center in New England were surveyed via telephone interviews or electronic surveys. Thematic analyses of qualitative comments further characterized experiences.

Background: Evidence-based blood pressure (BP) measurement is required for optimal clinical decision-making while improper measurement risks daily diagnostic and therapeutic errors.

Objective: To implement and sustain an evidence-based BP measurement protocol without extra resources and disseminate the protocol across a primary care network.

Design, Setting, and Participants: A Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) framework for quality improvement was used to design a standardized BP measurement protocol including a 5-minute rest period only for patients with persistently elevated blood pressure. Diadema savignyi spine extract in an experimental setup using L929 cell line in vitro. The cell metabolic activity of L929 cells is tested through an MTT assay. The sea urchin spine extract is applied to the cells in two concentrations: 100 μg/ml (136% viability) and 200 μg/ml (95% viability). The bioactive components of the sea urchin spine are identified via GC-MS, and the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities are evaluated using catalase assay (CAT), glutathione (GSH), and nitric oxide (NO) tests. Results show that the GC-MS identified bioactive components including the anti-inflammatory and anti-irritant bisabolol oxide and the pro-inflammatory oleic acid. …

Despite significant strides to curb HAIs in hospital environments, outpatient settings have not received the same degree of attention. Alloimmunisation, formerly isoimmunisation, or sensitisation can occur in pregnancy when a Rhesus D (RhD)-negative woman carries an RhD-positive fetus. Incompatibility of Rh status causes development of allo anti-D antibodies in response to antigen exposure from foreign fetal red cells in fetomaternal haemorrhages (FMHs) or potential sensitising events (PSEs) i.e., iatrogenic interventions (medical or surgical treatment), silent or spontaneous transplacental haemorrhages (STHs) in pregnancy, at birth or other traumas. Anti-D antibodies are immune-mediated and can cross the placenta and attach to fetal cells causing destruction and haemolysis.
