Black Midwives For Black Mothers: Ameliorating Racial Disparities In The Quality Of Maternal Healthcare, Kimberly Navarro Jan 2023

Black Midwives For Black Mothers: Ameliorating Racial Disparities In The Quality Of Maternal Healthcare, Kimberly Navarro

Theses and Dissertations

In the United States, maternal mortality represents a dire health crisis with a stark racial imbalance. Black women are two and a half to three times more likely to die from pregnancy and birth-related complications than their White counterparts. Racial disparities in maternal health can be explained by variations in the quality of maternal healthcare services that women tend to receive. Racial and ethnic minority women are more likely to receive inferior quality prenatal care (PNC), which brings to question the care model of traditional PNC and its adequacy in serving the healthcare needs of Black women. Since Black women …

Internal Medicine Interns' Perceived Preparation For Residency And Perceived Value Of Non-Surgical Ttr Course, Anthony Gaynier

Wayne State University Dissertations

Transition to residency (TTR) courses have become increasingly popular in medical schools. Yet there is limited data on interns’ perceived preparation for residency and the value of non-surgical TTR courses and their common components. Research has shown that TTR courses increase medical knowledge, clinical skills, and an increase in confidence in participants, but still incoming residents still do not feel prepared for the start of residency. Currently, there are only a few single institution studies researching interns’ perceived value of TTR courses.

This quantitative study surveyed internal medicine interns at five residency programs to find their preparation for residency, their …

Comparison Of Rural Associate Degree Nursing Students’ Clinical Judgment After Curriculum Change, Karen Bowen Jan 2023

Comparison Of Rural Associate Degree Nursing Students’ Clinical Judgment After Curriculum Change, Karen Bowen

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

New graduate nurses often lack adequate clinical judgment skills to practice competent nursing care, which may result in increased risk of committing practice errors that threaten patient safety. To mitigate errors in patient safety, industry leaders have called for nursing program improvements in preparation of nursing students’ clinical judgement as they transition to professional practice. Guided by Tanner’s clinical judgment theory, the rural state nursing programs in this study implemented a concept-based curriculum to promote clinical judgment which includes thinking skills, priority setting, and management of care. The purpose of this three-part, quantitative, nonexperimental study was to compare the development …

Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infection Prevention Education, Mary Jo Roskos Jan 2023

Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infection Prevention Education, Mary Jo Roskos

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractCatheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) are infections that happen in the urinary tract in men and women when foley catheterization is not done using strict aseptic techniques. Bacteria can then travel up the urinary catheter into the bladder; therefore, contaminating urine in the bladder. This project site’s nursing staff was experiencing a lack of knowledge regarding CAUTI prevention. This lack of knowledge on the importance of sterile technique when inserting urinary catheters can lead to CAUTIs. The project question for this project addressed whether the educational program on the importance of a strict sterile technique on urinary catheter insertion …

The Rayleigh Problem (Random Flights) Is Everywhere Redux, John E. Gray, Stephen R. Addison Jan 2023

The Rayleigh Problem (Random Flights) Is Everywhere Redux, John E. Gray, Stephen R. Addison

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The phase noise problem (or Rayleigh problem) occurs in all aspects of radar. It is an effect that a radar engineer or physicist always has to take into account as part of a design or in an attempt to characterize the physics of a problem such as reverberation. Normally, the mathematical difficulties of phase noise characterization are avoided by assuming the phase noise probability distribution function (PDF) is uniformly distributed, and the Central Limit Theorem (CLT) is invoked to argue that the superposition of relatively few random components obey the CLT and hence the superposition can be treated as a …
