(First paragraph) In relatively few pages (1), Professor Borelli provides a cogent overview of one of the vexing issues in assessing whether public health interventions “work.” The comprehensiveness of the presentation, covering issues ranging from treatment development through outcome evaluation, makes the article a valuable resource for practitioners and students in a variety of disciplines. Of particular value is the detailed template listing fidelity assessment strategies at the Treatment Design, Provider Training, Treatment Delivery, Treatment Receipt, and Treatment Enactment Stages.

Animal Models For Periodontal Disease, Helieh S. Oz, David A. Puleo Jan 2011

Animal Models For Periodontal Disease, Helieh S. Oz, David A. Puleo

Center for Oral Health Research Faculty Publications

Animal models and cell cultures have contributed new knowledge in biological sciences, including periodontology. Although cultured cells can be used to study physiological processes that occur during the pathogenesis of periodontitis, the complex host response fundamentally responsible for this disease cannot be reproduced in vitro. Among the animal kingdom, rodents, rabbits, pigs, dogs, and nonhuman primates have been used to model human periodontitis, each with advantages and disadvantages. Periodontitis commonly has been induced by placing a bacterial plaque retentive ligature in the gingival sulcus around the molar teeth. In addition, alveolar bone loss has been induced by inoculation or …

Self-Reported Poor Oral Hygiene Among In-School Adolescents In Zambia, Seter Siziya, Adamson S. Muula, Emmanuel Rudatsikira

Community & Environmental Health Faculty Publications

Background

Dental health is a neglected aspect of adolescent health globally but more so in low-income countries. Secondary analysis using the 2004 Zambia Global School-Based Health Survey (GSHS) was conducted in which we estimated frequencies of relevant socio-demographic variables and explored associations between selected explanatory variables and self-reported poor oral hygiene (not cleaning or brushing teeth) within the last 30 days of the completion of questionnaire.

Findings

Most of the 2257 respondents were males (53.9%) and went hungry (82.5%). More than 4 in 10 respondents drank alcohol (42.2%) while 37.2% smoked cannabis. Overall 10.0% of the respondents reported to have …

Gingival abscess, also known as parulis, is defined as a localized, acute inflammatory lesion that may arise from a number of sources, including microbial plaque infection, trauma, and foreign body impaction. It often presents as a smooth, fluctuant, red-color swelling and can occasionally be painful. It is generally limited to marginal and interdental gingiva. Based on its location it has been classified as a type of periodontal abscess which does not involve any attachment loss. The treatment comprises of removal of the cause and, in acute situations, excision of the abscess. A typical gingival abscess is easy to diagnose; however, …

objective: This research was carried to evaluate which ball size mounted on bar splinting two implants supporting overdenture is more favorable regarding bone height and density. material &methods: Two implants(Tut Dental Implant System,ECDI Cairo, Egypt) splinted by bar (OT bar Multiuse attachments,Cas,RHEIN 83, ITALY) carrying two balls (OT Cap attachments, Cas, RHEIN 83 Italy) were inserted in n=10/gp. Patients were divided into two groups according to the size of the balls used which were either micro1.8mm or macro 2.5mm (control group). For all patients overdentures were constructed & conventional tomograms were taken. Crestal bone height & density around the implants …

Effect Of Bracket Width On The First-Order Toe-In Angle Of The Maxillary First Molar, Erin N. Brophey Jan 2011

Effect Of Bracket Width On The First-Order Toe-In Angle Of The Maxillary First Molar, Erin N. Brophey

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: The first-order toe-in angle of the maxillary first molar is an important aspect of orthodontics and occlusion. Many variables contribute to the amount of distal offset expressed such as bracket slot dimensions, the amount of toe in angle built into the prescription of the bracket, bracket placement, bracket deformation, and tooth morphology. The purpose of this study is to mathematically predict the degree of first-order toe in angle loss with various archwire dimensions in various molar tube width preprogrammed brackets. Methods: Molar brackets from 3M Unitek, American Orthodontics™ (AO), Great American Orthodontics™ (GAC), Ormco™, Opal™, Rocky Mountain Orthodontics™ (RMO) …

Hydrolysis Of Amelogenin By Matrix Metalloprotease-20 Accelerates Mineralization In Vitro, Vuk Uskoković, Feroz Khan, Haichuan Liu, Halina Ewa Witkowska, Li Zhu, Wu Li, Stefan Habelitz

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

In the following respects, tooth enamel is a unique tissue in the mammalian body: (a) it is the most mineralized and hardest tissue in it comprising up to 95 wt% of apatite; (b) its microstructure is dominated by parallel rods composed of bundles of 40 – 60 nm wide apatite crystals with aspect ratios reaching up to 1:10,000 and (c) not only does the protein matrix that gives rise to enamel guides the crystal growth, but it also conducts its own degradation and removal in parallel. Hence, when mimicking the process of amelogenesis in vitro, crystal growth has to …
