Verification Of The Accuracy Of Electronic Mandibular Movement Recording Devices: : An In Vitro Investigation, Joshua Heath Balch
Verification Of The Accuracy Of Electronic Mandibular Movement Recording Devices: : An In Vitro Investigation, Joshua Heath Balch
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
One goal of restorative dentistry is to truly capture maxillomandibular relationships that accurately reproduce mandibular border movements and that would prescribe the best occlusal interface. Registration of horizontal and sagittal movements of the patient allows maximum cusp height and fossae depth with proper placement of occlusal ridges and grooves. The goal is to develop an occlusion that is interference free and entails the concepts of organic occlusion. Methods to transfer patient information to a highly adjustable articulator include mechanical recorders, mechano-electronic recorders and optoelectronic recorders. The purpose of this study is to verify the accuracy of electronic mandibular movement recording …

Despite the declining prevalence of dental caries over recent decades, caries remain the most common chronic childhood disease, especially in high-risk (low socio-economic status) populations. This appears to be true even when parents are aware of good oral health habits. The purpose of this study was to gather oral hygiene data on high-risk children in Nevada and to assess parental attitudes and education concerning their children’s oral health. Using visual examinations and a dmft (decayed, missing, filled, teeth) severity index, 235 lower SES children were screened and given treatment recommendations. The screenings showed larger than expected prevalence in both caries …

Background: Elevated blood lead levels (EBLL) are declining in the United States, although some population subgroups continue to exhibit significant health disparities. A childhood lead poisoning prevention program was recently started in Nevada, and many efforts have been made to support this program and increase the screening rates.
Methods: To expand the potential pool of children screened for EBLLs, a pilot study was performed to evaluate lead concentrations in extracted deciduous teeth using Graphic Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (GFAAS), Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS), and X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) analysis.
Results: Lead concentrations as determined by GFAAS and ICP-MS were …

Over 51 million school hours are missed annually by school-aged children due to a dental problem or visit, with 117 hours missed per 100 children (NIDCR, 2002). Approximately half a million of California's 7.2 million school-age children missed at least one day of school in 2007 because of dental issues such as toothaches (Pourat, & Nicholson, 2009). Independent research regarding various educational and intervention programs have been conducted in elementary schools across the country that focus on nutrition and/or physical activity, some of which have found that the programs positively impacted students’ dietary behaviors (Edwards, Mauch, & Winkelman, 2011; Muth, …

As the number of older adults in the United States continues to grow, this change in patient demographics will profoundly affect the practice of dental hygiene. Not only are there more older adults, but they are also retaining more of their natural teeth than ever before. The risk of alveolar bone loss; gingival recession, which can lead to exposed cervical and root areas of the teeth; and tooth wear all increase with age. The confluence of these factors raises the risk of noncarious cervical lesions (NCCLs).
The prevalence of NCCLs is growing, largely due to the rising numbers of older …

Envisioning An Oral Healthcare Workforce For The Future, David A. Nash
Oral Health Science Faculty Publications
Health is critical to human well-being. Oral health is an integral component of health. One is not healthy without oral health. As health is essential to human flourishing, it is important that an oral healthcare delivery system and workforce be developed and deployed which can help ensure all citizens have the potential to access oral health care. As such access does not generally exist today, it is imperative to advance the realization of this goal and to develop a vision of an oral healthcare workforce to functionally support access. Public funding of basic oral health care is an important element …

Prevalence And Risk Factors Associated With Denture Stomatitis, Siripen Pesee, Boonsong Pratipsawangwong, Chatchai Pesee
Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal
Objective To investigate the prevalence and risk factors, both prosthesis and microbiological, associated with different types of denture stomatitis in Thai patients. Materials and methods Thai patients with upper removable denture (n = 137) were evaluated for the prevalence of and risk factors associated with denture stomatitis by questionnaire, oral and dental prosthesis examination. Palatal mucosa and denture fitting surfaces were swabbed for yeast carriage investigation. Candida species were primarily identified by colony color on chromogenic Candida agar, and their identity confirmed by colony, microscopic cell morphology, and biochemistry tests. Results The prevalence of denture stomatitis was 52.56%, sub-classified as …

This case report describes how to establish the favorable anterior guidance in an anterior tooth wear patient. The anterior tooth wear is present at lower anterior teeth with an improper contour upper anterior fixed partial dental prosthesis (FPDP) 12-21. The FPDP was removed and replaced with a provisional cantilever FPDP. The favorable anterior guidance was established using a custom incisal guide table. Final restoration was placed. Periodic follow up evaluation is necessary.

Dental implant placement in the esthetic zone requires knowledge of various concepts and techniques, and a thorough oral examination of both hard and soft tissues. A meticulous treatment plan can then be developed, which ultimately will lead to an esthetically pleasing result. In this case report, the author has described key elements for successful implant restoration in the esthetic zone.

Objective This case report describes the esthetic treatment of mildly crowded maxillary anterior teeth using a removable orthodontic appliance, bleaching, composite resin and porcelain veneer to maximize the treatment results. Materials and methods A 28-year-old male with minor crowding of the maxillary anterior teeth wanted his teeth to look straight and unnatural extremely white color. A treatment plan was developed with the priority being orthodontic treatment to move teeth into alignment. Then the patientûs expectations were adjusted based on information from the team dentists. This article is a case report of a patient who lost left permanent maxillary lateral incisor, canine and left permanent maxillary first premolar and alveolar bone due to the enucleation of eosinophilic granuloma. Also, the report described how a multidisciplinary approach may improve the esthetic outcome when only orthodontic treatment was insufficient. The early loss of permanent anterior teeth affected the harmony of the incisors shown and ultimately the esthetics of the smile, and was a challenge in treatment planning. The recurring esthetic dental (RED) proportion was used for space distribution. Esthetic crown lengthening was indicated to improve the gingival …

Background: Internal derangement is the most frequent arthropathy affecting the temporomandibular joint, where its commonest form is anterior disc displacement with or without reduction. Despite the frequency of the disorder, the biochemical features of displaced discs are still unclear.
Methods: We investigated the expression pattern and localization of aquaporin‐1, an important channel protein involved in plasma membrane water permeability, in patients with anterior disc displacement (both with and without reduction), with a view to assessing the characteristics of local tissue responses to the microenvironmental changes induced by abnormal mechanical loading of the displaced disc. Protein expression was studied by immunohistochemistry …

In‐Vitro Comparison Of Tensile Bond Strength Of Denture Adhesives On Denture Bases, Doris Rachel Kore
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
PURPOSE: To evaluate the tensile bond strength (TBS) of three cream denture adhesives and one wafer denture adhesive on three denture base materials at five time intervals up to 24 hours. METHODS: Fixodent (Proctor & Gamble™), Super Poligrip (GlaxoSmithKline™), Effergrip (Prestige Brands, Inc.™), and SeaBond (Combe™) were tested with the Instron testing machine on three denture base resin cylinder models fabricated from two heat‐polymerized (Lucitone 199 and SR Ivocap) and one visible lightcured, shade stable (Eclipse) acrylic resins. Laboratory prepared artificial saliva with mucin was used for the control study. In accordance with ADA specifications, the TBS was tested at …
