In Vivo Assessments Of Bioabsorbable Az91 Magnesium Implants Coated With Nanostructured Fluoridated Hydroxyapatite By Mao/Epd Technique For Biomedical Applications, Mehdi Razavi, Mohammadhossein Fathi, Omid Savabi, Daryoosh Vashaee, Lobat Tayebi

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Although magnesium (Mg) is a unique biodegradable metal which possesses mechanical property similar to that of the natural bone and can be an attractive material to be used as orthopedic implants, its quick corrosion rate restricts its actual clinical applications. To control its rapid degradation, we have modified the surface of magnesium implant using fluoridated hydroxyapatite (FHA: Ca10(PO4)6OH2 − xFx) through the combined micro-arc oxidation (MAO) and electrophoretic deposition (EPD) techniques, which was presented in our previous paper. In this article, the biocompatibility examinations were conducted on the coated AZ91 …

Make A (Mission) Statement, Diana V. Macri

Publications and Research

Ethics are standards of right and wrong that prescribe what humans ought to do; principles such as veracity, courage, integrity, forthrightness, consistency, creativity, humility, altruism, quality, accountability, excellence, compassion, innovation, social justice, wisdom, kindness, trust, balance and fairness. Creating a mission statement offers one the opportunity to establish which principles are most important and helps reinforce them when tested.

The Use Of Fluorescence Technology Versus Visual And Tactile Examination In The Detection Of Oral Lesions: A Pilot Study, Hadeel M. Ayoub, Tara L. Newcomb, Gayle B. Mccombs, Marshall Bonnie

Dental Hygiene Faculty Publications

PURPOSE: This study compared the effectiveness of the VELscope(R) Vx versus visual and tactile intraoral examination in detecting oral lesions in an adult, high risk population.

METHODS: The pilot study compared the intra oral findings between 2 examination types. The sample was comprised of 30 participants who were addicted to either cigarettes or a dual addiction (cigarettes plus hookah). High risk population was defined as males who were current cigarette smokers or had a dual addiction. Two trained and experienced licensed dental hygienists conducted all examinations. Throughout the study, all visual and tactile intraoral examinations were conducted first by one …

Philips Institute for Oral Health Research Publications

Species-specific antimicrobial therapy has the potential to combat the increasing threat of antibiotic resistance and alteration of the human microbiome. We therefore set out to demonstrate the beginning of a pathogen-selective drug discovery method using the periodontal pathogen Porphyromonas gingivalis as a model. Through our knowledge of metabolic networks and essential genes we identified a “druggable” essential target, meso-diaminopimelate dehydrogenase, which is found in a limited number of species. We adopted a high-throughput virtual screen method on the ZINC chemical library to select a group of potential small-molecule inhibitors. Meso-diaminopimelate dehydrogenase from P. gingivaliswas first expressed …

Primary Xanthoma Of The Mandible: Report Of A Rare Case, D. Morel, R. D. Kelsch, P. J. Nolan Jan 2015

Primary Xanthoma Of The Mandible: Report Of A Rare Case, D. Morel, R. D. Kelsch, P. J. Nolan

Journal Articles

Xanthoma is a lesion most commonly seen in soft tissues such as the skin, subcutis, or tendon sheaths. Xanthoma formation is often associated with primary or secondary hyperlipidemia. Primary bone xanthomas are extremely rare benign bone lesions not associated with hyperlipidemia, histopathologically characterized by histiocytes, abundant lipid containing macrophages (foam cells), and multinucleated giant cells. Cholesterol clefts can be found in the medullary bone. Less than ten cases of xanthoma in the mandible have been reported. We present a rare primary intrabony xanthoma in a normolipidemic patient.

C-Fos: A Neural Activity Marker For Craniofacial Pain Research, Weera Supronsinchai, Robin James Storer Jan 2015

C-Fos: A Neural Activity Marker For Craniofacial Pain Research, Weera Supronsinchai, Robin James Storer

Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

It is well known that pain in animal models is difficult to measure. c-Fos, the protein product of the cellular immediate-early proto-oncogene gene, c-fos, can be activated in neuronal cells by noxious sensory stimuli including chemical irritation, mechanical, thermal, and electrical stimulation. The expression of c-Fos provides researchers with a tool by which the processing of somatosensory information, particularly nociception, from the craniofacial regions can be better understood. c-Fos is widely used as an indirect marker of neuronal activation after noxious stimulation in dental pain research, including in the trigeminal nervous system as activated by craniofacial or orofacial stimulation. Anatomical …

Chemokine Function In Periodontal Disease And Oral Cavity Cancer, Sinem Esra Sahingur, W. Andrew Yeudall Jan 2015

Chemokine Function In Periodontal Disease And Oral Cavity Cancer, Sinem Esra Sahingur, W. Andrew Yeudall

Periodontics Publications

The chemotactic cytokines, or chemokines, comprise a superfamily of polypeptides with a wide range of activities that include recruitment of immune cells to sites of infection and inflammation, as well as stimulation of cell proliferation. As such, they function as antimicrobial molecules and play a central role in host defenses against pathogen challenge. However, their ability to recruit leukocytes and potentiate or prolong the inflammatory response may have profound implications for the progression of oral diseases such as chronic periodontitis, where tissue destruction may be widespread. Moreover, it is increasingly recognized that chronic inflammation is a key component of tumor …
