Clear Aligner Therapy Vs. Traditional Brackets On Smile Arc, Sarah Elizabeth Larue
Clear Aligner Therapy Vs. Traditional Brackets On Smile Arc, Sarah Elizabeth Larue
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Background and Objectives: More so than ever, the public is becoming exceedingly aware of esthetics, and will evaluate their treatment outcome based upon the improvement to their smile and overall enhancement of their facial appearance. Smile arc is considered to be a key component of facial esthetics. Literature has demonstrated that orthodontic treatment mechanics utilizing traditional brackets and wires can cause flattening of the smile arc and that smiles with flatter arcs are judged to be less attractive. The aim of this study was to determine whether clear aligner therapy can help to preserve or improve the smile arc …

Sarcoidosis can involve any of the organs, however intraosseous involvement is rare and ranges from 5 to 15%, with lesions of the mandible being even rarer – currently with few known cases reported. Intraosseous lesions involving the mandible have been noted to be asymptomatic or associated with chronic jaw pain. Additionally, mandibular involvement can present as a lytic bone lesion mimicking osseous malignancy. Chronic polyarthritis is commonly associated with the progression of sarcoidosis and intraosseous involvement has been considered a late-stage sequelae. We report a case of biopsy-proven sarcoidosis within the mandibular condyle in an asymptomatic 56-year-old Caucasian female who …

Ceramics play a fundamental role in Dentistry and are used widely, due to their ability to mimic the optical characteristics of enamel and dentine, as well as for their biocompatibility and strength. Initially, dental ceramics were materials that formed part of systems, designed with the purpose of producing dental prosthetics that in turn were used to replace missing or damaged dental structures. However, due to the increased demand for esthetics, its development has gone beyond in such a way that it has led to the development of all ceramic restorations. So that, in the last few decades, there have been …

Background: Gingivo-buccal oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC-GB) is the most common cancer among men in India and is associated with high mortality. Although OSCC-GB is known to be quite different from tongue cancer in its genomic presentation and its clinical behavior, it is treated identically as tongue cancer. Predictive markers of prognosis and therapy that are specific to OSCC-GB are, therefore, required. Although genomic drivers of OSCC-GB have been identified by whole exome and whole genome sequencing, no epigenome-wide study has been conducted in OSCC-GB; our study has filled this gap, and has discovered and validated epigenomic hallmarks of gingivobuccal …

An Analysis Of The Economic Barriers To Oral Healthcare Access In Omaha, Nebraska, Elias Witte
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
Existing research regarding the analysis of the distribution of oral healthcare practitioners has been conducted across large metropolitan areas within the United States in order to determine the magnitude of healthcare resource deficits. Such research has demonstrated significant deficits in access to oral healthcare predominantly in lower-income urban areas. Consequently, patients in these socioeconomically disadvantaged areas have less access to routine oral care, which impacts their overall health and well-being. While there is an abundance of studies examining this issue in other localities across the country, there is a lack of information regarding the distribution of oral healthcare practitioners in …

An electrochemical aptasensor is described for the voltammetric determination of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from Escherichia coli 055:B5. Aptamer chains were immobilized on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) via reduced graphene oxide and gold nanoparticles (RGO/AuNPs). Fast Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy were used to characterize the nanomaterials. Cyclic voltammetry, square wave voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were used to characterize the modified GCE. The results show that the modified electrode has a good selectivity for LPS over other biomolecules. The hexacyanoferrate redox system, typically operated at around 0.3 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) is used as …

Identifying Exosomes In Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma With Efirm, Bram Holladay
Student Scholarship
Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC) affects 53,000 Americans each year making it the sixth most common cancer in the United States. The incidence rate may be even higher since current screening methods are underutilized and physical examinations can misdiagnose malignant oral tumors as benign inflammatory lesions. Recent advances in genetic, protein, and extracellular vesicle biomarker detection techniques can monitor the transformation of healthy cells into tumors before terminal stages arise. Biomarkers can be easily extracted from biofluids such as saliva making them less invasive than traditional tissue biopsies. One biomarker prevalent in OSCC is exosomes, which are extracellular vesicles that …
