Most patients with severe complications from COVID-19 have underlying conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and hypertension. In parallel, there is growing evidence for a link between periodontitis and non-oral systemic diseases. The oral cavity is also a reservoir for respiratory pathogens, and patients with periodontal disease are more likely to develop hospital-acquired pneumonia than healthy individuals. We therefore hypothesize that improving oral health could decrease the severity of COVID-19 symptoms and reduce the associated morbidity.

In this study, a new type of silver nanoparticles capped with metronidazolium based ionic liquid is synthesized. By this aim, metronidazole is altered to ionic-liquid type structure with citrate counter ion as reducing agent. The produced reducing agent was characterized using 1HNMR and 13CNMR and FT-IR. The capability of metronidazolium-based reducing agent in formation and capping silver nanoparticles was examined in a chemical reaction. More specifically, synthesized silver nanoparticles were synthesized and capped with metronidazolium-citrate based ionic liquid, while the formation of particles in 48 h was monitored by UV-Vis spectroscopy. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed the presence …

Background: Interpretation of bitewing radiographs is influenced by factors such as acquisition parameters (e.g. exposure, type of sensor), clinical technique, visualization (e.g. monitor type and calibration) and the observer (e.g. experience and fatigue bias). We hypothesized that the use of artificial intelligence (AI) will reduce visualization and observer factor in bitewing interpretation and improve diagnostic accuracy. Objective: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the use of AI in the form of a machine-learning algorithm to detect and quantify proximal lesions compared with human trained observers. Methods: 16,000 anonymized, digital bitewings of patients were hand searched and non-bitewing, …

Epithelial Responses To Porphyromonas Gingivalis In The Community Context., Zackary Ray Fitzsimonds
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Porphyromonas gingivalis, a keystone pathogen for periodontal disease, initiates a complex molecular dialogue with gingival epithelial cells, leading ultimately to disruption of host signaling pathways. Dysbiotic host responses are also thought to contribute to the initiation and progression of oral squamous cell carcinomas. Recently, the homeostatic commensal Streptococcus gordonii has been shown to antagonize P. gingivalis-induced epithelial cell signaling events in host cells, such as proliferation and migration. The aim of this study was to characterize pathways that P. gingivalis targets to disturb host signaling, with a specific focus on pathways that S. gordonii can restore to homeostatic …

Objectives
Proanthocyanidins (PACs) are biocompounds mimicking native collagen cross-links. The effective and practical delivery of any biocompound is pivotal for clinical usage. The aim was to investigate the dentin biomodification and effective formation of dentin–resin biointerfaces of two highly bioactive PAC-rich extracts, Vitis vinifera (Vv) and Camellia sinensis (Cs), delivered using neutral (NP) or acidic (AP) rinse-out primer approaches.
Methods
The depth of dentin demineralization (optical profilometry), dentin biomodification (apparent modulus of elasticity, collagen auto-fluorescence) and properties of dentin–resin interfaces (microtensile bond strength - μTBS, and micro-permeability) were investigated. NP consisted of either 15% Vv or Cs applied for …

The major current focus on treating rheumatoid arthritis is to put an end to long-term treatments and instead, specifically block widespread immunosuppression by developing antigen-specific tolerance, while also permitting an intact immune response toward other antigens to occur. There have been promising preclinical findings regarding adoptive Treg cells immunotherapy with a critically responsible function in the prevention of autoimmunity, tissue repair and regeneration, which make them an attractive candidate to develop effective therapeutic approaches to achieve this interesting concept in many human immune-mediated diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis. Ex vivo or invivo manipulation protocols are not only utilized to correct …

Camouflage Orthodontic Treatment On Skeletal Class Ii Malocclusion With Idiopathic Condylar Resorption, Hsin-Yi Lo, Liang-Ru Chen, Kwong-Wa Li, Ming-Lun Hong
Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics
Idiopathic condylar resorption (ICR), also known as idiopathic condylysis or condylar atrophy, and progressive condylar resorption (PCR), is a poorly understood progressive disease that affects the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) with multifactorial factors leading to severe mandibular retrognathism and anterior open bite. It is difficult to distinguish the exact causes for each individual. Different diagnostic methods and different treatment options can be chosen for different phases. In this report, we present a camouflage treatment with temporary anchorage devices (TADs) for a skeletal Class II open bite with ICR. The goal of improving facial profile and reconstructing of occlusion was achieved. Comprehensive …

Treatment Options For Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Shao-Chih Hsieh, Szu-Ting Chou, Yu-Chuan Tseng
Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is sleep-disordered breathing caused by the collapse of the upper airway. Because anatomical abnormalities of the narrow upper airway are undoubtedly the most critical cause of OSA, the available treatment methods for OSA mostly focus on these anatomical problems. The collapse of the respiratory tract is associated with different levels of upper airway obstruction. The obstruction of the airway can be divided into three parts: the nasal cavity, retropalatal region, and retrolingual region. This article summarizes some common OSA treatment methods, their underlying theories, and their effect on the upper airway.

Comprehensive orthodontic treatment usually takes 1–3 years to finish the details. The treatment duration depends on the complexity of treatment. Longer treatment times may increase the risk of root resorption, oral hygiene–related problems such as white spot lesion or dental caries, and periodontal destruction. Several methods, such as surgical-assisted procedures, drugs, and physical/mechanical stimulation methods, may accelerate tooth movement and shortened whole treatment time. This article reviews various surgical-assisted procedures and how the surgical method that can effectively shorten the treatment time. The advantages and disadvantages of various technique were also assessed.

Mir-365 (Microrna): Potnetial Biomarker In Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma Exosomes And Extracellular Vesicles, Jeffery Coon, Karl Kingsley, Katherine M. Howard
Dental Medicine Faculty Research
Introduction: miR-365 is a non-coding microRNA that regulates transcription and has been demonstrated to promote oncogenesis and metastasis in some cancers, while suppressing these effects in others. Many microRNAs are produced and then exported extracellularly in exosomes, which are small extracellular vesicles ranging from 30 to 100 nm that are found in eukaryotic fluids and facilitate many cellular functions. Exosomes and extracellular vesicles are produced by many cell types, including oral cancer cells—although no study to date has evaluated miR-365 and oral cancer exosomes or extracellular vesicles. Based on this information, our research question was to evaluate whether oral cancers …
