Constructing A Validity Argument For Assessments Of Clinical Competence In Predoctoral Dental Education: A Retrospective Evaluation, Fatema Alkazemi Jan 2022

Constructing A Validity Argument For Assessments Of Clinical Competence In Predoctoral Dental Education: A Retrospective Evaluation, Fatema Alkazemi

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to investigate and analyze some sources of validity evidence acquired from data (i.e., scores) of comprehensive clinical competency-focused components of the assessment system within the context of one school of dentistry through retrospective analysis of students’ data. Assessments in dental education need some form of evidence of validity to support the proposed interpretations of scores. The approach for evaluating evidence on test scores is presented as an argument, based on theory and logic, according to the four inferences in Kane’s view on validity: scoring, generalization, extrapolation, and implication. Based on our available data sets, …

Tooth Agenesis: Prevalence And Pattern Among Different Ethnicities, Gabrielle Coe Jan 2022

Tooth Agenesis: Prevalence And Pattern Among Different Ethnicities, Gabrielle Coe

All ETDs from UAB

Tooth agenesis is one of the most common developmental anomalies in humans and is defined as the failure of tooth development or odontogenesis. Prevalence of non-syndromic tooth agenesis has a reported range of 1.6-36.5% and varies by gender, ethnicity, and location. While tooth agenesis is well studied, information within ethnic groups requires further investigation. In this study, dental records of 3033 patients of the UAB School of Dentistry were evaluated to identify and categorize missing teeth by ethnicity and gender. Data analysis was conducted with Chi-square or Fisher’s exact test, with a two-sided significance level of 0.05. An overall prevalence …

Comparison Of The Condyle-Fossa Relationship And Resorption Between Patients With And Without Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (Jia): A Retrospective Three-Dimensional Cone-Beam Computed Tomography Study, Ahmet Arif Celebi

All ETDs from UAB

Introduction: The most common disease in pediatric rheumatology is juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). JIA is considered to be an autoimmune disease with an onset before the age of 16. The temporal mandibular joint (TMJ) has been reported to be involved in up to 87% of patients with JIA. Even though much research has been conducted on JIA, limited research has studied to understand its effect on the condyle-fossa relationship and to evaluate resorption amount on condyle by using a scoring system. Aim: The purpose of this study was (1) to evaluate the anatomical features of the glenoid fossa, (2) to …

Predictors Of E-Cigarette Initiation And Use Among Middle School Youth In A Low-Income Predominantly Hispanic Community, M Yvonne Gaddy, Denise Vasquez, Louis D Brown Jan 2022

Predictors Of E-Cigarette Initiation And Use Among Middle School Youth In A Low-Income Predominantly Hispanic Community, M Yvonne Gaddy, Denise Vasquez, Louis D Brown

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Introduction: E-cigarette use among middle and high school youth increased from 2. 5 million in 2014 to 9.2 million in 2019, becoming the most common tobacco product used among youth. Hispanic youth, the largest ethnic minority in the United States, have higher rates of tobacco use, including e-cigarettes, than non-Hispanics. Identifying factors that put youth at risk for future e-cigarette use is vital to focusing prevention efforts. Informed by social cognitive theory, this study identifies predictors of e-cigarette uptake among e-cigarette naïve youth in a predominantly low-income Hispanic community.

Methods: 1,249 students (6-8th grades) from two middle schools in El …

Effect Of Saliva Contamination On Crown Retention Strengths Of Resin And Rmgi Cements, Bushra Nizami

All ETDs from UAB

Background: The most common contaminant in the oral cavity is saliva. Many studies have shown that contamination with saliva negatively affects the strength of the resin-dentin bond. A literature review by Nair et al reported that 64.6% of studies on the topic show a detrimental effect of salivary contamination on adhesive materials. No published studies were found that thoroughly studied the effects of saliva contamination on RMGIs and resin cements with regards to crown retention rates. Objective: To study the effect of salivary contamination on crown retention strengths of RMGI and resin cements at various stages of bonding and in …

A Comparison Of Growth Factor Release Between Platelet Rich Fibrin And Recombinant Human Platelet Derived Growth Factor Bb (Rhpdgf-Bb) And Beta-Tricalcium Phosphate: An In Vitro Analysis, Maggie Ann Misch

All ETDs from UAB

Patients presenting with significant alveolar bone loss can pose challenges for the clinician. Traditional bone augmentation techniques may be inadequate in achieving necessary gains to restore missing teeth with dental implants. The adjunctive use of growth factors may accelerate the healing process and enhance tissue regeneration. GEM21S is a product that includes a recombinant growth factor approved by the Federal Drug Administration for oral surgery. It is delivered as a two-component system: 1) recombinant human platelet-derived growth factor-BB (rhPDGF-BB) and 2) betatricalcium phosphate (β-TCP).[1] The research on GEM 21S for ridge augmentation is mostly limited to case studies.[2- 4] Biologically, …

Comparative Analysis Of Gene Expression Patterns For Oral Epithelial Cell Functions In Periodontitis, Octavio A Gonzalez, Sreenatha Kirakodu, Linh M Nguyen, Luis Orraca, Michael J Novak, Janis Gonzalez-Martinez, Jeffrey L Ebersole

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The structure and function of epithelial cells are critical for the construction and maintenance of intact epithelial surfaces throughout the body. Beyond the mechanical barrier functions, epithelial cells have been identified as active participants in providing warning signals to the host immune and inflammatory cells and in communicating various detailed information on the noxious challenge to help drive specificity in the characteristics of the host response related to health or pathologic inflammation. Rhesus monkeys were used in these studies to evaluate the gingival transcriptome for naturally occurring disease samples (GeneChip® Rhesus Macaque Genome Array) or for ligature-induced disease (GeneChip® Rhesus …

Knowledge And Attitude Of Patients Indicated Extraction Or Impacted Third Molar Surgery Toward Antibiotic Use, Kamoltham Ekmetipunth

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

In Thailand, there is a significant gap in public knowledge about the use of antibiotics, and antibiotics are easily accessible. People prefer self-medication, leading to antibiotic resistance. Dentists play a role in the use of antibiotics. This study was designed to determine knowledge and attitude of patients related to antibiotic use if extraction or impacted third molar surgery is indicated. A cross-sectional survey with questionnaire was conducted at the Faculty of Dentistry, Chulalongkorn University. The questionnaire consisted of two main sections: demographic data and an evaluation of knowledge and attitude. A 5-point Likert scale was used. Bivariate analysis was conducted …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

The purpose of this study was to examine the expression profiles of RNA and protein in Thai individuals with dental fluorosis and compare them with those without fluorosis. Additionally, the study aimed to establish a correlation between the severity of dental fluorosis, urinary fluoride levels, and water fluoride levels. Methods: Schoolchildren in areas endemic for fluoride in Lamphun and Ratchaburi provinces of Thailand were screened for dental fluorosis severity and then enrolled in the study. Fluoride concentration in 24-hour urine and drinking water samples was measured using an ion-selective fluoride electrode. Saliva samples were collected in sterile tubes and stored …
