An Analysis Of Blood Cortisol Levels In Oral Surgery Patients Under Various Levels Of Intravenous Medication, Fred L. Bunch

This study was designed to objectively evaluate each pharmacological component of the Loma Linda intravenous sedation technique. The results were evaluated as a function of stress as measured by plasma cortisol levels.

The study was conducted on fifty patients in groups of ten. Blood samples were taken at set procedure intervals during dental extraction of third molar teeth. A component of the Loma Linda technique was deleted from each of the groups to ascertain its role in sedation and relief of stress.

Results show a trend toward reduction of plasma cortisol levels as the procedure progresses, indicating a measure of …

A Clinical Comparison Of The Effectiveness Of Two Intracanal Medicaments, Xp-7/Prednisolone And 1% Pcp/Prednisolone, In Reduction And Duration Of Post-Treatment Pain, Kenneth G. Whitnack

This study was undertaken to determine which intracanal medication, 1% aqueous parachlorophenol with prednisolone or XP-7 with prednisolone was the most effective in reducing the severity and duration of post-treatment pain following initial, conventional endodontic therapy. The investigation was conducted by five endodontists in their private offices and utilized a double-blind technique.

The postoperative reactions of 343 patients were examined statistically. It was shown that there was no statistically significant difference in the reduction or duration of post-treatment pain with either drug. Other factors such as sex, age, location of tooth and presence of a radiographic lesion were statistically significant …

A computerized cephalometric study of mandibular rotation was made of one hundred and eight patients that were treated by Drs. Ricketts and Bench of Pacific Palisades, California. These treated cases are on file at Rocky Mountain Data Systems in Sherman Oaks, California. The Ricketts computerized cephalometric analysis was utilized with each case.

The present study was designed to develop a periodontal screening examination which would fulfill the following requirements:

1. It should utilize precise and easily understood criteria.
2. It should take a short period of time.

Inflammation of the connective tissue adjacent to the periodontal pocket may depend on the continuous presence of bacteria. Following periodontal treatment, subgingival plaque accumulation may interfere with healing. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of irrigation with chlorhexidine or oxytetracycline on the cultivable bacteria in standardized chronic periodontal pockets in dogs. Chronic periodontal pockets were irrigated with either 5 ml. of 2 percent chlorhexidine or 250 mg. of oxytetracycline in 5 ml. distilled water. The pockets were irrigated dally for two days and were sampled on the first, fourth, seventh, fourteeth, twenty-first, thirty-fifth and forty-second days …

The purpose of this research was to determine if the advancements of cephalometrics and the capacity of the computer to quantify skeletal relationships could help the orthodontist recognize those cases where arch length could be gained through buccal expansion with little risk of relapse. The intent of this paper was to evaluate a precipitation hardenable stainless steel (Alloy I) as an alternate to chromium cobalt alloys (Alloy II) for orthodontic purposes.

After evaluating several heat treatments of alloy I it was determined that solution treatment produced a wire that was soft initially and had similar properties found with alloy II. After solution treatment of alloy I a 330 gram load was required to deform the wire 1.0 mm which proved to be similar to the 295 gram force required for alloy II for the same deformation and only an 11% increase in resistance of …

An Evaluation Of The Cytotoxicity Of Root Canal Filling Materials On Tissue Culture Cells In Vitro: Grossman's Sealer, N2 Permanent, Rickert's Sealer, And Cavit, Donald D. Antrim

An in vitro study using radioactively-labeled tissue culture cells was conducted over a seven-month period on Grossman's sealer, Rickert's sealer, N₂ Permanent, and Cavit to determine the lasting and relative tissue toxicity of these materials.

From this study it was observed that all materials possess lasting tissue toxicity. When relative toxicity is considered, Grossman's is the most toxic, followed by N₂, Rickert's and Cavit in descending order of toxicity. Both Grossman's and N₂ would be considered highly toxic, with Rickert's displaying moderate toxicity. Cavit would be considered mild to moderate in toxicity.

A correlation was established among the circumferences of teeth in a given set. This is the first step in constructing a band numbering system so that the fitting of one band (the predictor tooth) would give you the band sizes for the remaining teeth in the set. This would make possible improved efficiency for the orthodontist during band selection.

Individual sets of teeth from impressions of patients starting orthodontic treatment were measured by the use of the dentometer. The upper second bicuspid was chosen as the predictor tooth after the correlation matrices were computed.

The purpose of this research was to determine if forward movement of the lower incisor in a horizontal plane during active treatment affected the post-retention stability. The post-active treatment position of the lower incisor in relation to APo plane, NB plane and mandibular plane was also studied to determine if it affected the post-retention stability.
