We examined the therapeutic effects of free and liposome-encapsulated amikacin on Mycobacterium avium-M. intracellulare complex infection by using the beige-mouse model of the disease. In the first series of studies, intravenous administration of four weekly doses of 5 mg of amikacin per kg encapsulated in large (approximately 0.4-μm diameter), unilamellar liposomes arrested the growth of M. avium-M. intracellulare complex organisms in the liver, as measured by CFU counts. M. avium-M. intracellulare complex levels in untreated animals and in those treated with the same dose of free amikacin increased by several orders of magnitude over 8 weeks. The fusion of large unilamellar phosphatidylserine liposomes (PS LUV) induced by La3+ has been monitored using the 1-aminoapthalene-3,6,8-trisulfonic acid/p-xylenebis(pyridinium bromide) (ANTS/DPX) fluorescence assay for the mixing of aqueous contents. The fusion event is extensive and nonleaky, with up to 95% mixing of contents in the fused liposomes. However, addition of excess EDTA leads to disruption of the fusion products in a way that implies the existence of metastable intermembrane contact sites. The maximal fusion activity occurs between 10 and 100 microM La3+ and fusion can be terminated rapidly, without loss of contents, by the addition of excess La3+, e.g., 1 …

The anatomical relationship of the mandibular canal and related structures were examined in 29 dried human mandibles (21 mature and eight immature). First and second premolars and molars were sectioned in a buccal-lingual plane. The molars were separated into mesial and' distal sections. A total of 322 sections were examined according to age (immature or mature), left or right, and type of tooth/root. Thirteen measurements were taken of each section and the results were statistically analysed.

A Transmission Electron Microscopy Study Of Early Changes In Hypoxic Pulps, Nah Nah Chen

Early cellular changes in pulps whose blood supplies were severed were studied using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Twenty-eight extracted teeth were divided into seven equal groups. Except for the 0 hour group, all other teeth were incubated in Tyrode solution at 37°C, after extraction. After 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2, 4, and 8 hours, teeth were split open and the pulps were processed for light and transmission electron microscopy and evaluated for cellular changes. Except for nuclear pyknosis in the 4 and 8 hour groups, light microscopic examination revealed very little changes when compared with that of TEM examination. With the …

The effects of a 12-week period of oral hygiene alone on gingival conditions and subgingival microflora in 15 patients with severe periodontitis were investigated. In addition, subgingival microsamples were compared during this oral hygiene phase with those obtained 1 week after debridement. Clinical measurements and subgingival samples from selected sites were taken at week 0 (baseline), week 6, and week 12. Microbial samples were also taken at week 13, that is, one week following debridement. This study was undertaken to test the hypothesis that a corticotomised tooth moves as a tooth-bone unit when under orthodontic force. A non-human primate model was designed to test the hypothesis. The non-human primate selected was Macaca fasicularis. Three adult males with erupted third molars were chosen so that extrapolation could be made to the adult human. The correction of anterior open bite in dolichofacial individuals with magnetic forces has been studied. The attempt was made to intrude buccal segments by using interarch magnets set in repulsion in order to correct the anterior open bite of six dolichofacial patients. It was expected to intrude the posterior sections with these magnetic forces, to autorotate the mandible and to close the anterior open bite by decreasing the lower facial height and rotating the facial axis closed. The present investigation utilized the Bolton Analysis to determine the incidence and magnitude of tooth-size discrepancy in a sample of 227 orthodontic patients. Sliding calipers were used to measure the mesiodistal width of the permanent dentition on pretreatment study models of 120 Caucasian, 51 Black, and 56 Hispanic patients. The overall and anterior ratios were analyzed and the frequency and magnitude of excess maxillary and mandibular tooth structure was determined. Each racial group demonstrated a significant incidence of tooth-size discrepancy in the maxillary and mandibular arches of a magnitude (> 0.5mm) which would require some form of correction. Endodontic (root canal) infections are generally considered to be caused by the invasion of microorganisms which destroy pulp tissue and extend to the periapical region. No definitive study has identified a specific bacterium or group of bacteria as etiological agents. We quantitively measured antibodies present in the serum of 30 normal individuals and patients with either chronic (n = 30) or acute (n = 30) periapical lesions with the indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for IgG and IgM against 11 oral microorganisms routinely isolated from such lesions. This study examined the relationship between maxillary and mandibular incisor intrusion and root resorption. Age, sex, facial type, treatment time, extraction versus non-extraction therapy, width of the symphysis, and the angle of the incisors to skeletal reference planes were also studied for their relationship to intrusion and root resorption. Thirty-eight cases treated with utility arches for intrusion were selected. Root shortening was found to average 1.84 mm for maxillary incisors and 0.61 mm for mandibular incisors. Intrusion of incisors in a population that exhibited growth was found to be one of "holding against growth". No relationship was found to exist …

The purpose of this study was to compare liquid and gel etchants (37% phosphoric acid) by measuring tensile and shear bond strengths of four orthodontic adhesive systems.

Four orthodontic adhesives were tested on 287 extracted human teeth, 144 of which were etched with liquid and 143 with gel. The four adhesives tested were Concise-3M, Challenge-Ormco (new product), Unite-Unitek (no mix), and Fuji Glass-ionomer filling material or cement.

This report provides an abbreviated review of the literature on treatment and prognosis of periodontal furcation lesions. In addition, it describes a surgical technique designed to accomplish bone regeneration in class II furcation defects, together with the rationale for the development of this procedure. Results of treatment of 30 defects with this technique are presented in a subsequent report (Gantes et al. 1987).

The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that occlusal plane changes induced by orthodontic treatment remain stable during retention, and to show that the occlusal plane cant is related to facial type and occlusal classification.

A comparison of facial type, occlusal classification, extraction status, and growth status was provided. The sample consisted of pretreatment, posttreatment, and postretention cephalometric radiographs of 156 orthodontic cases from the records of Loma Linda University School of Dentistry, Department of Orthodontics. Changes in the cant of the occlusal plane were evaluated by the Frankfort horizontal to occlusal plane angle.

Polyoxyinethylene (Delrin) is a polyacetyl homopolymer which has been used successfully in many orthopedic joint replacements. To determine histologic host response to Delrin as a temporomandibular joint condylar replacement condyles were removed from ten fully mature macaca fasicularis monkeys. The condyles were replaced with a total prosthetic Delrin condyle attached to a titanium mesh. Specimens obtained at one, two, and six months indicated total acceptance of the Delrin, remodeling of the glenoid fossa and formation of bone between the middle cranial fossa and the roof of the glenoid fossa. The purpose of this investigation was to determine if statistically significant differences existed in the gingival health of subjects who brushed with a rotary electric toothbrush (Rota-dent^R when compared to a conventional toothbrush (Oral B-35^R). A randomized, two group research design was employed using forty subjects. At baseline and at two week intervals for six weeks, gingivitis and supragingival dental plaque were measured by the Loe and Silness Gingival Index and the O'Leary Plaque Index, respectively. This study investigates the effectiveness of computer assisted instruction on the oral hygiene status of children. Over a one month period, as measured by the Personal Hygiene Performance Index, sixty-five fifth grade students participated in one of three intact groups: oral health computer assisted instruction, traditional oral health instruction, or no oral health instructions. Oral health instructions were identical in content for computer assisted and traditional lecture formats. During pretest evaluations, students were presented with a dental kit containing a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and an oral health instruction pamphlet. The evidence is clear that the incidence of dental caries is related to the frequency of eating sugar. The use of sugar substitutes is a suggested way of reducing sugar intake. A variety of noncariogenic sweeteners exists, but most have no practical value for caries control because of their technical or safety problems, taste, or cost. Urinary bladder tumorigenic effects have been reported in experimental animals treated with saccharin and cyclamates. Because of concerns for human safety, cyclamates were banned in the U.S., and saccharin use was permitted only by special legislation. The polyalcohols sorbitol and xylitol are important sugar …
