The kinetics of fusion of influenza virus (A/PR/8/34) with human promyelocytic leukaemia (HL-60), human T lymphocytic leukaemia (CEM) and murine lymphoma (S49) cells were investigated. Fusion was demonstrated by electron microscopy, and monitored by fluorescence dequenching of octadecylrhodamine incorporated in the virus membrane. Rapid fusion was induced upon mild acidification of the medium. At pH 5, all virus particles were capable of fusing with the cells. The initial rate and the extent of fusion were maximal between pH 4.9 and 5.2 and declined sharply below and above this range. The rate constants of adhesion of influenza virus to cells or …

Although a number of manufacturers are marketing disposable prophylaxis angles, no literature exists regarding the mechanical efficacy and efficiency of these products. It was the purpose of this in vitro evaluation to compare and evaluate five brands of commercially available disposable prophylaxis angles for vibration, noise, heat rise, and torque. Random samples of each brand of disposable prophylaxis angle were utilized. A wide variety of disposable infection control products is being marketed including disposable prophylaxis angles. It was the purpose of this in vivo investigation to evaluate the clinical efficacy of five different brands of commercially available disposable prophylaxis angles. Utilizing a splitmouth design. 11 dental hygienists evaluated disposable prophylaxis angles while completing a routine oral prophylaxis. Fifty samples each of Brahler. Ash/Dentsply, Denticator. and Young Dental angles were compared to a control angle (Teledyne Getz). To investigate the role of peptide backbone conformation on the biological activity of chemotactic peptides, we synthesized a unique analog of N-formyl-Met-Leu-Phe-OH incorporating the C ^α,α disubstituted residue, dipropylglycine (Dpg) in place of Leu. The conformation of the stereochemically constrained Dpg analog was examined in the crystalline state by x-ray diffraction and in solution using NMR, IR, and CD methods. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a school-based fluoride mouthrinse program in a fluoridated community. Such an evaluation is important because the effect of such programs may decrease over time due to the widespread use of fluoride.

Two elementary schools were chosen. One had a fluoride mouthrinse program: the other did not. The subjects were children in grades one and six. Their caries experience was examined using dft. dfs. DFT, and DFS scores.

There were no statistically significant differences between the two schools. The program had no significant effect in the community studied.

Faculty must be standardized so that student skills are assessed in an unbiased, equal fashion. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of calibration on dental hygiene faculty standardization. Examples of correct and incorrect instrumentation skill performance were demonstrated and discussed during the calibration exercise. Groups simultaneously viewed instrumentation skills while assessing correct or incorrect performance. Group standardization was determined through analysis of answer key agreement, intra-rater reliability, and inter-rater reliability. Data were statistically analyzed through the use of a z-test for both answer key agreement and inter-rater reliability, and chi-square (x²) for inter-rater reliability …

มารดาตั้งครรภ์จำนวน 303 คน ที่มารับบริการจากแผนกสูตินรีเวช โรงพยาบาลพระมงกุฎเกล้าฯ ได้ตอบคำสัมภาษณ์จากแบบสอบถามเกี่ยวกับความรู้ทางทันตสุขภาพของตนเองในระยะตั้งครรภ์และผลที่อาจมีต่อทันตสุขภาพของบุตรในครรภ์ รวมทั้งการดูแลป้องกันทันตสุขภาพของบุตรในระยะหลังคลอด แล้ว วิเคราะห์ข้อมูลด้วยไคสแควร์และการทดสอบอัตราส่วนที่ระดับนัยสําคัญ α = 0.05 พบว่ามารดาที่ตอบถูกต้อง 50% ขึ้นไป มี 11 จาก 23 ข้อ ประเด็นที่มีความรู้ถูกต้องน้อยที่สุดคือเพียง 1.3% ทราบว่าลูกจะแปรงฟันให้ สะอาดได้เองเมื่ออายุ 7-8 ปี 14.2% มีความรู้ถูกต้องว่ามารดาตั้งครรภ์มีปัญหาเหงือกและฟันไม่ใช่เป็น เพราะฟันแม่เสียแคลเซียมไปสร้างฟันให้ลูก 24.7% ไม่เห็นด้วยว่าระยะตั้งครรภ์มารดามีปัญหาเหงือกและ ฟันเพราะเกิดจากการรับประทานอาหารไม่ครบหมวดหมู่ ประเด็นที่มีความรู้ถูกต้องมากที่สุดคือ 97% เห็นด้วยว่าการ แปรงฟัน ทำเพื่อกำจัดคราบเชื้อโรคในช่องปาก และ 91.7% มีความรู้ถูกต้องว่าฟันลูกในครรภ์จะสร้าง ได้สมบูรณ์หากมารดารับประทานอาหารครบหมวดหมู่และได้สัดส่วน ความรู้ที่ถูกต้องบางประเด็นสัมพันธ์กับ ระดับการศึกษา จำนวนบุตร แต่ไม่สัมพันธ์กับอายุของมารดา การศึกษาครั้งนี้แสดงให้เห็นว่าทันตแพทย์ควร ให้ทันตสุขศึกษาแก่มารดาตั้งครรภ์เพิ่มขึ้นเป็นกลุ่มพิเศษ

ผลการศึกษา การใช้ความเย็นจี้รักษาอาการปวดปลายประสาทเส้นที่ 5 จำนวน 21 ราย พบค่าเฉลี่ย ระยะหายไปของความเจ็บปวด ในปลายประสาท mental 14 เดือน ปลายประสาท infraorbital 17 เดือน ปลายประสาท long buccal 18 เดือน และปลายประสาท lingual 5 เดือน การรับความรู้สึกของปลายประสาท ทั้งหมดจะกลับคืนภายใน 2 เดือน โดยไม่มีอาการแทรกซ้อนจากการผ่าตัดรักษาด้วยวิธีนี้เลย

วัตถุประสงค์ของการวิจัยเพื่อศึกษาความคิดเห็นของผู้มารับบริการของภาควิชาทันตกรรมสำหรับเด็ก คณะทันตแพทยศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย กลุ่มตัวอย่างเป็นผู้ปกครองที่พาเด็กมารักษาโรคฟัน ในช่วงเดือนพฤศจิกายน 2533 ถึงเดือนมกราคม 2534 จำนวน 200 คน โดยผ่านการตอบแบบสอบถามเกี่ยวกับการให้บริการทางด้านต่าง ๆ ของภาควิชาฯ ผลการวิจัยพบว่า มากกว่าร้อยละ 80 ของผู้ตอบแบบสอบถามพอใจในบริการทําบัตร สําหรับบริการนัด ร้อยละ 58.8 ให้ความเห็นว่าระยะเวลาที่รอคิวนาน ร้อยละ 57 คิดว่าช่วงของการนัดแต่ละครั้งไม่ห่างเกินไป และร้อยละ 74 ตอบว่าได้รับบริการตรงเวลานัด สําหรับบริการด้านจ่ายยาร้อยละ 70.5 มีความคิดเห็นว่า ไม่ ต้องใช้เวลารอนานในการรับยา มากกว่าร้อยละ 90 เห็นว่าเหมาะสมดีแล้ว ร้อยละ 68 เห็นว่าควรจะบริการ ผู้ป่วยจรให้มากขึ้น จากข้อมูลผลการศึกษาครั้งนี้ สามารถนำไปปรับปรุงแก้ไขการให้บริการในภาควิชาฯ เพื่อให้การ บริการผู้ป่วยมีประสิทธิภาพสูงขึ้น

การใช้ลูกน้ำเพื่อทดลองหาประสิทธิภาพของน้ำยาฆ่าเชื้อ 6 ชนิด คือ Dettol, Chlorinated soda, 4-Chlorophenol, Lysol, Iodine และ Ethyl alcohol ด้วยวิธีทดลองที่ง่ายและประหยัด การทดลองเปรียบเทียบ ใช้ Phenol coefficient ผลการทดลองพบว่า Iodine มี Phenol coefficient สูงที่สุด คือ 90.9 รองลงมาคือ Dettol 37.9 บทความอธิบายวิธีทํา ประโยชน์ และข้อคิดในการทำวิจัยนี้

ข้อสรุปถึงผลของการบบำบัดทางทันตกรรมจัดฟันก่อนการทำศัลยกรรมต่อการเจริญเติบโตของขากรรไกรบนของผู้ป่วยปากแหว่ง เพดานโหว่ขัดแย้งกัน เนื่องจากการศึกษาส่วนใหญ่กระทำในผู้ป่วยที่ได้รับการบำบัด ทางทันตกรรมจัดฟันก่อนการทำศัลยกรรมร่วมกับการปลูกกระดูก ในระยะแรก วัตถุประสงค์ของการวิจัย เพื่อประเมินการเปลี่ยนแปลงของขากรรไกรบนภายหลังการบำบัดทางทันตกรรมจัดฟันก่อนการทําศัลยกรรม กลุ่มตัวอย่างประกอบด้วยทารกปากแหว่งเพดานโหว่ด้านเดียว 30 ราย (ชาย 15 ราย หญิง 15 ราย) ( ซึ่งได้รับการบําบัดทางทันตกรรมจัดฟันก่อนการทำศัลยกรรมตั้งแต่แรกเกิด การเปลี่ยนแปลงของขากรรไกรบน ศึกษาจากหุ่นจำลองแบบฟัน 3 ระยะ ประกอบด้วย หุ่นจําลองแบบฟันก่อนการบำบัด ก่อนการเย็บปากแหว่ง และก่อนการเย็บเพดานโหว่ ผลการวิจัยแสดงว่า ก่อนการเย็บปากแหว่ง (อายุเฉลี่ย 7.5 ± 2.4 เดือน) ความกว้างและความยาวของ ขากรรไกรบนมีค่าเพิ่มขึ้นอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ ในขณะที่ช่องโหว่บริเวณสันเหงือกแคบลง ก่อนการเย็บ เพดานโหว่ (อายุเฉลี่ย 17.5 ± 2.7 เดือน) ช่องโหว่บริเวณสันเหงือกแคบลงอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ โดยสรุปการบำบัดทางทันตกรรมจัดฟันก่อนการทำศัลยกรรมทำให้ช่องโหว่บริเวณสันเหงือกแคบลงด้วยการควบคุมให้ สันเหงือกทั้งสองชิ้นเจริญเติบโตไปในทิศทางที่กำหนด

By practicing prudent infection control techniques and utilizing proper operating techniques, the clinician can continue to enjoy the time-efficient and efficacious benefits of airpolishers, while ensuring a maximum protection from aerosols for the patient and the operator.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the short-term efficacy of a mechanical device (Poliswab^R) on supramarginal bacterial plaque removal and gingival health. The sample consisted of 15 residents in a spinal cord unit at the Hampton Veterans' Affairs Medical Center. A single blind, split-mouth, pretest-posttest design was used in the study with each subject serving as his own control. The purposes of this investigation were to identify: 1) what preventive oral health services were provided by nurses' aides to nursing home residents, 2) how frequent preventive oral health services were performed by nurses' aides, 3) who nurses' aides reported abnormal or suspicious findings detected in the resident's mouth, 4) what factors discouraged and encouraged nurses' aides performance of oral health services, and 5) how nurses' aides rated their oral health knowledge of services they performed. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of combined orthodontic and orthognathic surgical treatment upon the soft tissue profile, and to determine the correlation between soft tissue response and the following variables: type of surgery, genioplasty, lip thickness, method of surgical site closure, interlabial distance and eversion of the lower lip. Preoperative and long-term postoperative lateral cephalograms were traced for 327 patients (231 females, 96 males) who had been treated with orthognathic surgery (108 Le Fort I, 109 mandibular sagittal split, 110 combined Le Fort I and mandibular sagittal split surgery). The pulps of mandibular molars of 15 athymic and 15 conventional rats were surgically exposed and left open to their oral flora. Each group was divided into 3 subgroups of 5 animals each. The rats were sacrificed after their pulps were exposed for 2, 4, or 8 weeks. After fixing, decalcifying, and embedding, the specimens were sectioned and stained with H and E. They were then examined under a microscopic grid and quantified by percentages of surface areas of bone, connective tissue, bone marrow, intrabony spaces, periapical lesions, and numbers of osteoclasts. The purpose of this study was to compare the fracture strength of ceramic brackets which are currently on the market with ceramic brackets tested in a previous study at Loma Linda. Fracture strengths of standard edgewise ceramic brackets vs. pre-torqued ceramic brackets and bicuspid ceramic brackets vs. central incisor ceramic brackets were also compared.

Radiation due to x-ray exposure is a concern, and the development of the Dolphin™ DigiGraph represents an attempt to limit this exposure. The purpose of this paper was to compare measurements (using Ricketts analysis) obtained from conventional radiographic cephalometric tracings with those obtained by computerized digitizing with the DigiGraph. Forty-six patients from the Loma Linda University School of Dentistry graduate orthodontic clinic were digitized, and the results were compared to the x-ray tracings of these patients. The results showed that seven of the twenty-one variables examined exhibited a statistical similarity between the two methods (DigiGraph and x-ray tracing). An examination …
