Effect Of Lactobacillus Sakei Lb706 On Behavior Of Listeria Monocytogenes In Vacuum-Packed Rainbow Trout Fillets, Şükri̇ye Aras Hi̇sar, Güzi̇n Kaban, Olcay Hi̇sar, Telat Yanik, Mükerrem Kaya

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The effect of a bacteriocin-producing strain, Lactobacillus sakei Lb706, on the behavior of Listeria monocytogenes in rainbow trout fillets stored under vacuum at 4 ºC for 14 days and at 10 ºC for 5 days was investigated. At 4 ºC, growth of L. monocytogenes was significantly inhibited (P < 0.05) by L. sakei Lb706 during 10 days of storage while bacteriocin-negative Lb706-B did not affect the growth of L. monocytogenes during 14 days of storage. In the presence of the sakacin A-producing strain of L. sakei (Lb706), the growth of L. monocytogenes was significantly inhibited (P < 0.05) in the first 3 days of storage at 10 ºC, after which its count increased to 10^7 CFU/g. The control group and the group containing L. sakei Lb706-B showed similar growth patterns of L. monocytogenes. Significant increases (P < 0.05) were observed in all groups in terms of psychrotrophic bacteria counts. No significant (P > 0.05) changes in pH values during storage at 4 ºC and 10 ºC were determined. Consequently, the results of the present study showed that L. sakei Lb706 can be used as a protective culture in freshwater reared rainbow trout, especially for preventing possible contaminations of Gram-positive food-borne pathogenic bacteria such as L. …

Effects Of Mad Honey On Blood Glucose And Lipid Levels In Rats With Streptozocin-Induced Diabetes, Nuray Öztaşan, Konca Altinkaynak, Fati̇h Akçay, Fatma Göçer, Şenol Dane

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study investigated whether mad honey affects blood glucose and lipid levels in experimental animals. It was found that mad honey caused significant decreases in blood glucose and lipid levels in animals with streptozocin-induced diabetes mellitus (n = 10) and controls (n = 10). These decreases may be due to grayanotoxins in the mad honey causing the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas to secrete insulin by stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system or M_{2}-muscarinic receptors.

Concentrations Of Some Minerals In Cows With Retained Placenta And Abortion, Yaşar Akar, Hami̇t Yildiz

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was undertaken to investigate the relationship between blood levels of Ca, Zn, Mg, K, and Na and the occurrence of retained placenta and abortion in cows. Serum samples from 34 cows were analyzed (18 with retained placenta, 10 without retained placenta (control), and 6 that had aborted). Ca and Zn levels in cows with retained placenta were significantly lower than those in the control group. The serum Zn levels of aborted cows were higher (P < 0.001) than those of cows with retained placenta. Cows in the control group and those with retained placenta were divided into subgroups based on age (3, 4-6, 7-9 years old), type of parturition (normal, dystocia), and sex of calves (male, female). The serum Ca concentration of 3-year-old cows with retained placenta was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than that of those 7-9 years old. It is concluded that lower serum Ca and Zn levels in cows may induce placenta retention.

Fractal Dimensions In Red Blood Cells, Alina Rapa, Servilia Oancea, Dorina Creanga

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

We studied the erythrocyte aggregability for different animals using fractal analysis. Red blood cell aggregation is an important component of whole blood viscosity and is the major cause of the non-Newtonian flow properties of blood. To understand the aggregation process many models have been proposed in the literature. Since aggregates formed by aggregation have a fractal structure, mathematical descriptions of their irregular structure can be obtained using fractal geometry. For this purpose, blood samples were prepared from cows, sheep, rabbits, roosters, horses and humans by diluting 1:200 and mixing for 3 min in adequate reactives. A Turk room, microscope system …

Effects Of Salinity On The Osmoregulatory Functions Of The Gills In Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis Niloticus), Yusuf Güner, Osman Özden, Haşmet Çağirgan, Muhammet Altunok, Volkan Kizak Jan 2005

Effects Of Salinity On The Osmoregulatory Functions Of The Gills In Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis Niloticus), Yusuf Güner, Osman Özden, Haşmet Çağirgan, Muhammet Altunok, Volkan Kizak

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Changes in branchial Na^+-K^+-ATPase activity, and the number and size of chloride cells resulting from the transfer of fish into seawater were investigated in tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) (22.03 -+ 0.91 g), which were transferred to full strength seawater (36‰) directly and for 14 days. Whole mortality occurred when the tilapia were transferred into seawater directly. That is, no acclimation was allowed. Branchial chloride cell numbers decreased after seawater exposure, whereas a gradual increase was observed in chloride cell sizes. However, the chloride cells of seawater-adapted individuals showed a 2-fold increase in size (P < 0.05). Initially 5‰ and 10‰ salinity resulted in lowered branchial Na^+-K^+-ATPase activity but then this activity increased and the highest activity was at 25‰ salinity (P < 0.01). This study demonstrated the effects of high salinity through direct and gradual acclimations on branchial Na^+-K^+-ATPase activity and chloride cell abundance.
