Crops that can set fruit without pollination have an advantage for early-season high tunnel production. With a diverse fruit shape and color, summer squash is a valuable crop providing diversity, especially for the early farmers market. Six selected summer squash cultivars that are either indicated as parthenocarpic cultivar in seed catalogs or showed high capability to set fruit without pollination in the previous study were evaluated in a high tunnel trial in spring 2018 at the Southwest Purdue Agricultural Center, Vincennes, IN.

A fall broccoli trial was conducted in a high tunnel at the Southwest Purdue Agricultural Center, Vincennes, IN in 2016 to test the potential of growing broccoli in high tunnels after tomato. Six broccoli cultivars were evaluated in the trial. Seedlings were transplanted in the high tunnel on Sep. 2. Plants started to form heads in the middle of October. The first harvest occurred on Oct. 25 on cultivars Blue Wind and Green Magic. Harvest for cultivars Belstar and Arcadia started the latest on Nov. 11. Cultivars Green Magic and Blue Wind developed about 2 side heads per plant, which …

There were few significant differences across the six nitrogen levels for the traits measured for all three crops. No clear trends were observed as nitrogen level was increased from 50 to 175#/acre. Better separation may have been obtained with more replication. Results indicate growers of slicing cucumber, yellow squash, and zucchini should be able to obtain adequate fruit yields using a season total of between 75 and 100#/acre nitrogen.

It was again a difficult year for growing tomatoes at the Southwest Michigan Research and Extension Center. Rain shortly after field planting induced early bacterial disease infection, leading to defoliation and decreased fruit quality. The best performers in the fresh market trial were Red Snapper, Camaro, Saybrook, Jolene, and Myrtle. It was difficult to get good separation in the saladette trial. No entries rose above the others.

Allowing bell pepper transplants to develop a taproot system was detrimental to early plant growth. However, it did not have a significant detrimental effect on most fruit yield and quality parameters measured, and by final harvest, plants of all three root length treatments had similar above ground plant weights.

Fruit quality and yield were lower than in previous Southwest Michigan Research and Extension Center slicing cucumber trials. This may primarily be to lower bee activity affecting pollination, fruit set and fruit shape. However, from this trial Bristol, SVCS0927, LS 75-1011, Darlington, and Perfect 10 deserve consideration for further commercial planting in Southwest Michigan.

Fourteen green fresh-market cabbage cultivars were evaluated at the University of Kentucky horticultural farm in Lexington in a replicated trial to evaluate their performance in Central Kentucky. Cultivars were listed in seed catalogs as having black rot (Xanthomonas campestris) resistance or tolerance. Cultivars were grown on bare soil following University of Kentucky recommendations to commercial cabbage growers. Plants were not inoculated with X. campestris, and Badge SC bactericide was applied once early in the season. ‘Lucky Ball’ was the top-performing early-season cultivar, being consistently tender, sweet to slightly sweet, and having little to no sulfur aftertaste. Polyamines (PAs) constituting putrescine (Put), spermidine (Spd), and spermine (Spm) are ubiquitous in all organisms and play essential roles in the growth and developmental processes in living organisms, including plants. Evidences obtained through genetic, biochemical, and transgenic approaches suggest a tight homeostasis for cellular PA levels. Altered cellular PA homeostasis is associated with abnormal phenotypes. However, the mechanisms involved for these abnormalities are not yet fully understood, nor is it known whether cellular ratios of different polyamines play any role(s) in specific plant processes. Fresh-consumed parthenocarpic cucumbers (Cucumis sativus) are a popular and high-value crop sold in local food markets. The parthenocarpic plant characteristics and climbing growth habit make cucumbers an ideal crop for high-tunnel production. Major types of parthenocarpic cucumbers include Beit alpha and mini, Dutch greenhouse, American slicer, and Japanese. Information regarding yield performance, plant growth, and disease resistance of the four types grown in high-tunnel conditions is limited. High tunnels are an increasingly popular part of the infrastructure among small and diversified farms that market their products directly to consumers. In addition to extending the growing season, research has strongly indicated that high tunnels can increase yield, enhance shelf life, and improve the quality of crops grown. The objective of this study was to gain a better understanding, from the perspective of farmers, of the challenges and opportunities associated with adopting high tunnels for specialty crops in Indiana. This is a compilation of 20 research trial reports from four land-grant universities in the Midwestern United States. Crops include cantaloupe, pickling cucumber, pepper, potato, pumpkin, summer squash and zucchini, sweet corn, tomato, and watermelon. Somecrops were evaluated in high tunnels or hoophouses. Most trials evaluated different cultivars or varieties. One report addressed plant spacing for sweet corn and one addressed soil block for production of tomato seedlings. A list of vegetable seed sources and a list of other online sources of vegetable trial reports are also included.
