Insect pollination in agriculture provides as much as 35% of the global food supply and contributes hundreds of billions of dollars to the global economy each year. In the past 30 years, reports of declining populations of managed and wild bees, notably the western honey bee (Apis mellifera) and a wide array of bumble bees (Bombus spp.), have raised concerns about the stability and outlook of agriculture. Evaluating ripeness attributes of peaches and nectarines helps determine feasibility for commercial markets. Five cultivars (Amoore Sweet, Bowden, Bradley, Effie, and Souvenirs) and five breeding selections (A-663 CN, A-794 CN, A-811 CN, A-819, and A-885) were hand harvested in 2017 from the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture’s Fruit Research Station in Clarksville, AR. The tree-ripened fruit was evaluated at harvest (day 0), and commercially-ripened fruit (ripened during storage) was evaluated at 0, 7 and 14 d storage at 4° C. Since peaches and nectarines are a valued fresh-market crop worldwide, evaluating postharvest potential helps determine feasibility for commercial markets. The ripeness attributes of 10 peach and nectarine genotypes were evaluated at harvest (day 0) and after 7 and 14 d storage at 4° C. The fruit was hand harvested at tree ripeness (ripened on the tree) and commercial ripeness (ripened during storage). The attributes of the tree-ripened fruit and commercially-ripened fruit varied at harvest and included chlorophyll (0.04-0.86 abs), peach weight (132-264 g), soluble solids (7.23-12.57%), pH (3.18-4.66), titratable acidity (0.16-1.21%), and flesh firmness (6.92-35.72 N). Over the 10 year period from 1966/67 to 1975/76, stonefruit production has not greatly expanded. The area planted has declined and the number of young, non-bearing trees also has declined.
Trends in the price ofsdtonefriut for the past decsde have revealed no real improvement on local or export markets but it is unlikely that these trends will continue. While costs will continue to rise, profitability of stonefruit is likely to be helped by cost saving techniques. Mechanical equipment changes and changes to management techniques will mean reduced management costs.

THE peach canning industry in Western Australia at present has only a limited period of operation, coinciding with the harvest time of the major variety, Golden Queen.
New canning peach varieties tested at Stoneville Research Station could be used to extend the harvest period of canning peaches beyond that of the present standard variety, Golden Queen.
This would have obvious advantages for growers and a canning industry.
The South African variety Keimoes was the most promising canning peach tested. Tests on other varieties are continuing.

Shothole disease is most damaging on almonds and early-flowering peaches and apricots but can also affect nectarines, plums and cherries.
The causal fungus IStigmina carpophila) survives the summer in infected buds and twig cankers.
The autumn rains then stimulate production of spores which infect other twigs, buds and subsequently the new spring growth.

DURING the past decade the acreage of Japanese plums in Western Australia has increased by 10 percent, and production has risen by nearly 40 per cent.
Furthermore, almost 30 per cent, of our trees were still classified as non bearing in 1966, so rapid increases in production are certain to be recorded within the next few years.

The PEACH is a very versatile fruit and a universal favourite. It is surprising then that the area of peaches in this State is very little different today to what it was 15 years ago. This is in spite of the fact that the population has increased by 48 per cent.
New peach varieties now under test could help satisfy the consumers' demand for a better range of high quality eating peaches— and expand the market for peaches in Western Australia.

The University Fruit Farm may be considered as a substation or detached portion of the Nebraska Experiment Station. It was established to assist in answering questions pertaining to fruit production, and only experiments of this sort are carried on. Supervision of this property rests with the Department of Horticulture of the Nebraska College of Agriculture. This circular has been prepared with the view of furnishing visitors to the farm with a brief outline of the experimental projects. Further information is available from either the local foreman or from the Department. Visitors are always welcome and helpful suggestions are solicited.
