The tomato crop is subject to many hazards. Pests, diseases and adverse environmental conditions are frequently encountered and must be overcome. This bulletin has been prepared to give growers, whether they be experienced or new to tomato culture, an outline of the more important cultural practices involved in producing satisfactory crops. Common diseases and pests are described and where possible recommendations for their control are given.

THE Stoneville Research Station is a tree fruit station situated in the Darling Ranges 25 miles north east of Perth.

Climatically it is similar to the Hills fruit districts adjacent to Perth and is suitable for the growing of apples, pears and most stone fruits.

Citrus fruits can also be grown moderately well.

The beet belongs to the Chenopodiaceae or Salsolaceae, an order of plants which include among them many of the native saltbushes. The sugar beet (Beta vuigaris crassa) is supposed to have been developed from the wild beet (Beta vulgaris maritima), which is indigenous to the countries along the coast of Southern Europe. it is a biennial plant—that is, of two years' duration.
