The papaw (Carica papaya L.) is a native plant of Central America. It produces its highest yields of good quality fruit in tropical regions.

The tree is short-lived and rarely produces crops for more than two or three years. It is quick growing and soon reaches a maximum height of 5 to 7 m. It is usually unbranched, but may branch after either injury to the top or cutting back.

SUMMARY Stomp controlled the widest range of weeds with a wide margin of crop tolerance. Recommend. 3 l/ha or lower before transplanting. Bensulide controlled grasses well, but did not control nightshade. Recommend 12 l/ha after transplanting. Lasso controlled a wide range of weeds, but the margin of selectivity is narrow. Recommended maximum 4 l/ha. Surflan controlled all weeds well, except nightshade, when applied after transplanting. The margin of selectivity is narrow on tomato and zero for nightshade. Incorporation of radioactive carbon from acetic acid-2-¹⁴C (sodium salt), β-hydroxy-β-methylglutaric acid (HMG)-3-¹⁴C, L-leucine-U-¹⁴C, L-alanine-U-¹⁴C, and D-glucose-U-¹⁴C into the predominant glycosidic steroidal alkaloids, ⍺-solanine and ⍺-chaconine of potato sprouts was 4.88, 9.0, 15, 24, and 20 times less than that of mevalonic acid (MVA)=2-¹⁴C (DBED salt), respectively.
