In scarcity of light and primary producers, subterranean ecosystems are generally extremely oligotrophic habitats, receiving poor supplies of degradable organic matter from the surface. Human direct impacts on cave ecosystems mainly derive from intensive tourism and recreational caving, causing important alterations to the whole subterranean environment. In particular, artificial lighting systems in show caves support the growth of autotrophic organisms (the so-called lampenflora), mainly composed of cyanobacteria, diatoms, chlorophytes, mosses and ferns producing exocellular polymeric substances (EPSs) made of polysaccharides, proteins, lipids and nucleic acids. A taxonomic account of Acanthaceae subfamily Nelsonioideae based on morphological and phylogenetic data treats five genera with 172 species: Anisosepalum (3), Elytraria (21), Nelsonia (2), Saintpauliopsis (1), and Staurogyne (145). Two other currently recognized genera, Gynocraterium and Ophiorrhiziphyllon, are included within Staurogyne, and the new combinations, Staurogyne guianensis and S. macrobotrya, are proposed. Probable apomorphic and other diagnostic macro- and micromorphological characters are discussed relative to the subfamily and genera. Characters of the inflorescence, androecium (especially pollen), and seed show important phylogenetic and diagnostic signal. The Complete Plastid Genome Sequence Of Iris Gatesii (Section Oncocyclus), A Bearded Species From Southeastern Turkey, Carol A. Wilson

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Iris gatesii is a rare bearded species in subgenus Iris section Oncocyclus that occurs in steppe communities of southeastern Turkey. This species is not commonly cultivated, but related species in section Iris are economically important horticultural plants. The complete plastid genome is reported for I. gatesii based on data generated using the Illumina HiSeq platform and is compared to genomes of 16 species selected from across the monocotyledons. This Iris genome is the only known plastid genome available for order Asparagales that is not from Orchidaceae. Phytoliths in Poa pratensis L. (Poaceae) leaf blades and sheaths are described in this study. The role of plant opal particles-known as phytoliths-is considerable in taxonomical studies, and their long-term preservation in sediments makes them a useful tool in the reconstruction of ancient plant communities and plant-human interactions. All together, 2244 phytoliths were counted and analyzed in 25 plant samples (5 shoots of 5 specimens and approximately 500-600 phytoliths per specimen). The biogenic silica content of P. pratensis leaves was determined at 2.61%, and 27 morphotypes have been described using the International Code for Phytolith Nomenclature. The aim of the present study is to provide detailed morphological descriptions of the seed coat in 10 species of Oxalis from Buenos Aires Province, Argentina, using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The seed is ovate and brown, and its surface is smooth. Oxalis has a mechanism of spermobolia by which a part of the seed coat is detached by the rupture of cells, leaving exposed a layer of opened cells, generally with oxalate crystals. Ellenberg developed a system that assigns indicator scores for habitat characteristics of individual plant species. Swamp forests are highly diverse ecological communities and include different plant species, all of which have different ecological requirements. Ellenberg's indicator values (EIVs) were calculated for soil pH and nitrogen (N) concentration in some swamp forest species in the Central Black Sea region of Turkey. In this study, the EIVs for soil pH were usually similar in the swamp forest species studied, while some differences were found with respect to EIVs for soil nitrogen concentration. The morphological features of Cephalaria Schrad. ex Roem. & Schult. were studied based on our specimens collected between 1994 and 2010 in Turkey and herbarium specimens from various herbaria. In the present study, typifications, a list of synonyms, descriptions, ecology, phytogeographical regions, conservation status, and distribution of all studied taxa are given. Taxonomic relationships between similar species are discussed. Illustrations of habit, flower, calyx, involucel, and involucral and receptacular bracts of some species are given. A new natural hybrid between Prosthechea cochleata and P. radiata (Orchidaceae, Laeliinae) from the central part of Guatemala, P. × chixoyensis Mó & Cetzal, is herein described, illustrated, and characterized based on the morphological characters. The new nothospecies is most similar to P. cochleata but the petals are proportionally broader and the mucro of the labellum is subapical, as observed in P. radiata. Additionally, the perianth segments are neither as strongly reflexed as they are in P. cochleata nor patent as in P. radiata. Macromycetes Determined In Yomra (Trabzon) District, Ilgaz Akata, Yasi̇n Uzun, Abdullah Kaya

This study was carried out on macrofungi samples collected from Yomra district during 2007-2012, and 236 taxa belonging to 58 families were identified. Crocicreas cyathoideum (Bull.) S.E.Carp., Phaeohelotium fagineum (Pers.) Hengstm., and Dacrymyces chrysospermus Berk. & M.A.Curtis are recorded for the first time from Turkey. Calyptella capula (Holmsk.) Quél., Campanella caesia Romagn., and Guepiniopsis buccina (Pers.) L.L.Kenn. are the first members of the genera Calyptella Quél., Campanella Henn., and Guepiniopsis Pat. respectively, in Turkey.

Allium Efeae (Amaryllidaceae), A New Species From Northwest Anatolia, Turkey, İlker Genç, Fatma Neri̇man Özhatay

Allium efeae Özhatay & İ.Genç is described as a new species from northwest Anatolia. The distribution area of this species is restricted to Kıbrıscık (Bolu) and Beypazarı (Ankara). It resembles Allium lycaonicum Siehe, but differs in tepal shape and color, leaf length, and filament shape. A table comparing the diagnostic morphological characters of the new species and A. lycaonicum is provided. The diagnostic morphological characters, distribution, conservation status, and color photographs of the new species as well as its chromosome number (2n = 24) are presented.

A taxonomic review of Centaurea L. sect. Centaurea (Asteraceae) in Iran was carried out. Seven taxa are recognized and 1 of them is described as a new species: Centaurea joharchii Ranjbar & Negaresh. This new species has been described and illustrated from Khorasan Province, SE Iran. A new combination is proposed: C. kermanshahensis (Wagenitz) Ranjbar & Negaresh. In addition, C. aggregata Fisch. & C.A.Mey. ex DC. subsp. aggregata is typified and C. diffusa Lam. is reported here as a new record for Iran. Finally, a key to all species of the section Centaurea in Iran is provided.

Reseda malatyana Yıldırım & Şenol (Resedaceae) is illustrated and described as a new species to science, endemic to eastern Anatolia, Turkey. Reseda malatyana is related to Reseda armena Boiss. It differs from Reseda armena by the following characters: densely smaller, unbranched at the upper part, papillate-hispidulous stems; dark green, thicker, and densely papillate-hispidulous leaves; bigger petals; smaller pedicels; relatively smaller with sinus seeds; oblate-spheroidal, tricolporate, and rugulate pollen grains. Pyrophosphate (PP_{I}) is the by-product of several reversible key reactions of primary metabolism. Thus, generated PP_i should be removed by hydrolysis via pyrophosphatases to prevent accumulation and to drive anabolism. In plastids, a plastidic, soluble pyrophosphatase splits PP_i released by ADPG pyrophosphorylase. The cytosolic PP_i pool is believed to be hydrolyzed by tonoplast- and/or Golgi-integral H^{+}-translocating pyrophosphatases. The Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. genome encodes 6 soluble pyrophosphatase isoforms (PPas), 1 of which was shown to be localized in plastids. ITS sequences from isolated populations of Acer in the Colchic region allow direct assumptions about the origin, evolution, and radiation of one of the most abundant West Eurasian tree species, Acer campestre L., the field maple. We inferred the molecular evolution of the internal transcribed spacers ITS1 and ITS2 of the nuclear-encoded 35S rDNA cistron in Acer campestre using a range of methods including sequence- and distance-based phylogenetic networks and motif analyses. Salt stress can trigger several physiological responses in plants such as increased accumulation of ABA and antioxidant enzyme activities, which have been closely associated with the tolerance of plants to salt stress. In the present study a novel zeaxanthin epoxidase gene, designated EsABA1, was isolated from Eutrema salsugineum. EsABA1 contained a full-length open reading frame (ORF) of 2001 bp, encoding 666 amino acids. Transcription of EsABA1 rapidly accumulated after exposure to various abiotic stresses, suggesting that the EsABA1 gene was involved in multiple stress responses and tolerance. Tamarix L. accessions were collected from Sistan and Baluchestan Province of Iran, covering an area of about 60 km located in the southeast of Iran. The present investigation was performed to study the genetic structure of Tamarix populations in this province and present some information about gene flow among these populations. Forty-two tree specimens were randomly collected and studied for molecular and morphological diversity. The family of AP2/ERF plant specific transcription factors, including dehydration-responsive element binding (DREB) proteins, has been reported to activate and bind with the dehydration responsive element/C repeat (DRE/CRT) of stress-inducible gene promoters. We amplified DREB1A from Oryza sativa var. IR6 (807 bp) and subjected it to protein homology modelling and phylogenetic analysis. BLAST sequence analysis indicated high similarity (99%) with the O. sativa japonica group. Phylogenetic analysis was carried out with other 12 DREB sequences from cereals/grasses using Clustal Omega. Artemisia L. comprises ca. 20 annual species out of ca. 500, which are distributed mainly across the Old World grades, accounting for multiple independent acquisitions of annual habit throughout the evolutionary history of the genus. This makes Artemisia an interesting subject for the study of plant life cycle evolution in a phylogenetic context and its consequences at genomic level. To identify and isolate genes related to abiotic stress (salinity and drought) tolerance in grapevine, a candidate gene approach led to the isolation from Cabernet Sauvignon cultivar of a full-length cDNA of dehydrin gene. The latter, named VvDhn, which is highly and mainly induced in late embryogenesis in seeds, encodes for a protein of 124 amino acids with a predicted molecular mass of 13.3 kDa. Watermelon fruit is very sensitive to ethylene, showing rapid deterioration and water-soaking upon ethylene exposure. The objective of this study was to isolate and determine the expressions of ethylene receptor genes in watermelon fruit. As a result of PCR amplification of cDNAs obtained via RT-PCR of total RNA from watermelon fruit with degenerate primers, 3 partial cDNAs were obtained. Cold acclimation induces the expression of cold-regulated genes needed to protect plants against freezing damage. Fourteen candidate genes were identified as being differentially expressed (presence/absence) between cold acclimated and nonacclimated crown and leaf tissues of 2 winter wheat lines using the cDNA-AFLP method. Two TILLING populations originating from the 2 winter wheat lines were further developed in order to create mutant forms of the candidate genes to verify their role in freezing-tolerance formation. Barbarea integrifolia DC. (Brassicaceae) is an endangered and endemic species located in Erzincan and Gümüşhane provinces of Turkey. In total, 27 individuals from 2 natural populations were assessed using the random amplified polymorphic DNA polymerase chain reaction (RAPD-PCR) method coupled with sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS1) rDNA region. Genetic accuracy of RAPD-PCR was tested with 25 RAPD primers, and it resulted in 115 clear and reproducible DNA fragments from 13 RAPD primers. In an attempt to arrive at a system of Crocus that closely reflects species relationships, we provide here phylogenetic, morphometric, geographic, and nomenclatorial data for the species of a narrower-defined, monophyletic Crocus series Reticulati. We sequenced the ETS and ITS regions of the nuclear ribosomal DNA in 9 Reticulati and 19 outgroup species. Three chloroplast loci (trnL-F, rps16-trnQ, matK-trnK) were sequenced in the newly defined series Reticulati species and 1 outgroup. Data were analyzed with Bayesian and parsimony algorithms. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are tiny, endogenous, nonprotein-coding, and functionally negative regulators of posttranscriptional gene regulation. Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is a starchy and tuberous crop that is also important for its potassium and vitamin contents. Though potato is the world's fourth largest food crop, its miRNAs and their targets have not been well studied. Here we report a comparative genomics approach that was applied to explore miRNAs and their targeted proteins in potato. A new species, Bucklandiella seppeltii Bednarek-Ochyra, Ochyra, Sawicki & Szczecinska, is delimited by its distinct morphology and biogeography. The geographical range of the new species is restricted to the southern-temperate and southern-cool-temperate zones of Tasmania and New Zealand, with maximum occurrence on the South Island of the latter insular country. The species is described and illustrated and its distribution is mapped. The systematic position of B. seppeltii is revealed to be a sister to New Zealand B. allanfifei Bednarek-Ochyra & Ochyra by molecular evidence based on parsimony analysis of nuclear sequences. Chamaedaphne calyculata, one of the largest shrubs in the family Ericaceae, is native to boreal zones of the northern hemisphere. The complete nucleotide sequence of the Chamaedaphne plastid genome was determined in the present study. The genome is a circular double-stranded DNA molecule 176,744 bp in length, that includes the typical large single-copy (LSC), small single-copy, and 2 inverted repeats (IR) regions. The C. calyculata plastid genome contains 113 genes, excluding the second IR region. Four taxa of Algerian Astragalus L. were studied for their chromosome number, karyotype features, and genome size. Fluorochrome banding was done for detection of GC-rich DNA regions, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) for physical mapping of 35S and 5S rRNA genes, and flow cytometry for nuclear DNA content. All the taxa present the same chromosome number (2n = 2x = 16) and single 35S and 5S rDNA loci, but their distributions on chromosomes are different.
