Two New Records And One Confirmation Of The Genus Poa L. (Poaceae) For The Flora Of Turkey, Evren Cabi̇, Robert J. Soreng

Turkish Journal of Botany

The ongoing revision of the genus Poa in Turkey has resulted in two new Poa records for the Flora of Turkey as Poa pratensis subsp. irrigata (Lindm.) H. Lindb. and Poa eigii Feinbrun. In addition, the presence of Poa palustris L. is confirmed. A brief discussion and an illustration for each taxon are provided.

Identification of defense-related genes in the host is one of the most essential steps in understanding disease resistance mechanisms in plants. In this study, a suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) library was constructed to study differential gene expression in banana plants mediated through a Fusarium wilt pathogen (Fusarium oxysporum f.sp cubense - Foc) and its interaction with the Foc effective biocontrol agent Trichoderma asperellum (prr2). A detailed micromorphological analysis of the labellum was carried out using both light and scanning electron microscopy on 14 genera (Anacamptis, Cephalanthera, Coeloglossum, Dactylorhiza, Gymnadenia, Himantoglossum, Limodorum, Neottia, Orchis, Ophrys, Platanthera, Serapias, Spiranthes, and Steveniella) of Orchidaceae in Turkey. In the samples, various epidermal features were identified in the spur that developmentally are invaginations of the labellum and the adaxial surface of the labellum. Typical secretory cells and inclusions such as starch or calcium oxalate crystals of different sizes and shapes were found within the structure of individuals. In this study the epiphytic bryophyte flora and vegetation of the Bucak Sweetgum Forest Nature Park and Karacaören Dams Environment (Burdur, Turkey) were investigated between 2012 and 2013. We identified 221 bryophyte specimens collected from tree trunks; a total of 37 bryophyte taxa (8 liverworts and 29 mosses) belonging to 19 genera and 15 families were identified. D?rought is a major environmental stress that limits the growth and productivity of fruit trees in semiarid and arid regions. We evaluated the potential of exogenous nitric oxide (NO) to improve the drought tolerance of apple rootstocks (Malus spp.). Leaves of 2-year-old seedlings of drought-sensitive Malus hupehensis (Pamp.) Rehd. And drought-tolerant Malus sieversii (Ledeb.) M.Roem. Rootstocks were sprayed with NO donor sodium nitroprusside (SNP) at 0-400 μmol L-1, and then the plants were subjected to drought stress. Diversity And Ecology Of Benthic Algae In Karagöl Lake, Karagöl-Saharanational Park (Şavşat, Artvin, Turkey), Bülent Akar, Bülent Şahi̇n

Benthic algal flora of Karagöl Lake, its seasonal variation, and the physical and chemical parameters of the water were studied between October 2008 and September 2010. The algal flora consisted of 112 taxa belonging to the divisions Charophyta (41), Chlorophyta (33), Cyanobacteria (18), Euglenozoa (17), Miozoa (2), and Ochrophyta (1). Six desmid taxa found in this research are new records for the freshwater algal flora of Turkey. The qualitative dominance of benthic taxa typical of slightly alkaline and mesotrophic ecosystems was observed. The qualitative and seasonal variations in epipelic taxa analyzed were dependent on the physicochemical characteristics of the water. …

Arbuscular Mycorrhizal And Dark Septate Endophyte Fungal Associations In Asparagus, Muthukumar Thangavelu, Muthuraja Raji

We studied the arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) and dark septate endophyte (DSE) fungal associations in five species of pot-grown Asparagus (A. aethiopicus, A. densiflorus, A. setaceus, A. racemosus, and A. umbellatus). Root colonization by AM and DSE fungi and AM spore numbers in the soil were assessed. AM fungal diversity indices like species richness, Shannon-Weiner index, Simpson's index, evenness, and Jaccard's index were determined. Relationships among the fungal and soil variables were also examined. All the species of Asparagus examined were colonized by both AM and DSE fungi, and these associations have been reported for the first time in four species. …

Campanula raddeana Trautv. (Campanulaceae), based on samples collected from Çıldır (A9 Ardahan), and Galatella cretica Gand. (Asteraceae), based on samples collected from Marmaris (C1 Muğla), were recorded as new findings for the Flora of Turkey. In addition, Silene samia Melzh. & Christod. (Caryophyllaceae) was confirmed in Turkey based on samples from four localities in southwest Anatolia. Detailed descriptions, locality information, and distribution maps of the cited taxa were also given in the present study.

This study investigated the correlation between endogenous levels of some signal compounds [nitric oxide (NO), salicylic acid (SA), abscisic acid (ABA)] and the antioxidant system in response to chilling stress in maize (Zea mays L.). Seedlings grown for 12 or 19 days under normal conditions (24/20 °C) were exposed to chilling stress (10/7 °C) for 2 days. The levels of NO, SA, ABA, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), superoxide anion (O2.-), and malondialdehyde (MDA) were determined in leaves of seedlings harvested on day 14 and day 21. We studied leaflets of 18 taxa of the genus Mimosa, specifically the Dolentes-Brevipedes taxonomic complex, focusing on micromorphology, type, shape, and density of trichomes. Within the nonglandular trichomes we described 3 types of nonbranched and 2 types of branched trichomes. We also described 2 types of stalked glandular trichomes, extending the recent classifications of trichomes in Mimosa. Multiseriate trichomes with lateral projections, which resemble incipient branching, are described here for many taxa. The floristic diversity and vegetation-environment relations in the southern part of the Eastern Desert, between 26°45?N and 24°1?N and between 32°45?E and 35°00?E and covering a total area of about 54,500 km2, were investigated. For this purpose, 142 georeferenced stands distributed in four transects were selected: 22 from Qena-Safaga road (T1), 28 from Idfu-Marsa Alam road (T2), 46 from Aswan-Kharit-Gimal (T3), and 46 from Red Sea Coastal Plain (T4). Astragalus unalii Çeçen, Aytaç and Mısırdalı, sp. Nov. (Fabaceae, sect. Malacothrix Bunge) is described as a new species from Karadağ (Karaman Province) in southern Anatolia and compared with its relatives growing in steppe vegetation. The new species is close to A. Tauricola Boiss. And A. Adiyamanensis Podlech and M.Ekici, endemic and growing in central and southern parts of Anatolia, Turkey. Taxonomic descriptions, pollen and seed characters, and geographical distribution of the new species are presented.

Hesperis tosyaensis A.Duran, a new species from northern Anatolia, is described and illustrated. It grows under open Quercus forest. The new species is distinct from the closely allied H. Ozcelikii A.Duran by the following features: stem erect, 45-90 cm tall, hispid, hairs 2-2.5 mm, and fruit glabrous. Genetic differentiation between closely related Hesperis L. Taxa and Matthiola W.T.Aiton was examined by molecular analyses of the ISSR. The chromosome number for Hesperis tosyaensis is 2n = 14. The Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden is a well-known botanical garden. Cyathus thindii, a new species of bird's nest fungus, was collected from this garden, and is described and illustrated in the present paper. It is distinct with its sessile basidiomata growing on a white mycelial pad, plicate exterior (partly) and interior wall of the peridium, comparatively large peridioles without tunica, and medium sized spores. Its relation with allied taxa is discussed and a provisional key to the Indian species of Cyathus is given in the present paper.

The long-neglected lichen described as Cladonia trapezuntica was rediscovered at its type locality in Turkey thanks to historical maps available at the Natural History Museum in Vienna. Molecular, morphological, and chemical analyses were applied to determine whether C. Trapezuntica is a distinct species or rather falls within the phenotypic variation of Pycnothelia papillaria. Although most of the podetia appear to be unusual for P. Papillaria, the molecular evidence indicates that C. Trapezuntica should be considered as a synonym of P. Seasonal distribution, abundance, and external morphological changes of Ceratium hirundinella in the Kralkızı and Dicle dam reservoirs on the Tigris River were investigated during 1 year (February 2008 to January 2009). This species was present in both dam reservoirs during all 4 seasons. The highest mean density of C. Hirundinella in Kralkızı Dam Reservoir was recorded in December, while in Dicle Dam Reservoir it was highest in June. C. In this study, the achene surfaces of 31 taxa belonging to the genus Centaurea L. Were examined in detail by means of electron microscopy. The main aim of this study was to characterize the microsculpture of the achene surface of the Turkish species of Centaurea sect. Acrolophus (Cass.) DC. (Asteraceae). Detailed descriptions of the achene surface were given for each taxon and a fruitful dendrogram was established by numerical analyses derived from the determined micromorphological features. In this study, the phytosociological structure of floodplain forests in the Euxine region of Turkey was examined from a large-scale perspective. Dichoropetalum alanyensis Bilgili, Sağıroğlu and H.Duman, a new species from South Anatolia in Turkey (Antalya-Alanya), is described and illustrated. It is closely related to D. Chryseum (Boiss. And Heldr. Ex Boiss.) Pimenov and Kljuykov, from which it differs mainly by its habit, basal leaves and lobes, and mericarp features. Diagnostic morphological characters are discussed. Tulostoma ahmadii, a new species found in the subtropical pine forest of Malakand, Pakistan, is described and illustrated. It is characterized by parallel to squamulose deep reddish brown scales on stipe with bulbous base, warty exoperidium, and tubular and relatively large-sized basidiospores. Macro- and microscopic features along with sequence data demonstrated that Tulostoma ahmadii is a distinct species from other members of Tulostoma. T. Squamosum, which is represented here as a new record for the country, has also been characterized on a molecular basis.

The tetraploid fern Cryptogramma crispa (L.) R.Br. Ex Hook. İs distributed across alpine and high latitude regions of Europe and western Asia and is sympatric with the recently described octoploid C. Bithynica S.Jess., L.Lehm. And Bujnoch in north-central Turkey. Our analysis of a 6-region plastid DNA sequence dataset comprising 39 accessions of Cryptogramma R.Br., including 14 accessions of C. Crispa and one accession of C. Bithynica, revealed a deep genetic division between the accessions of C. Crispa from western, northern, and central Europe and the accessions of C. Crispa and C. Natural and anthropogenic habitats differed greatly in terms of soil nutrients. Soil at the anthropogenic sites contained significantly lower concentrations of nitrogen (N) than those at the natural sites. Seeds of Epipactis helleborine were sampled from these two contrasting growth habitats and their size and nutrient composition were recorded. The 8 populations of E. Helleborine were different in seed and embryo volumes, but there were no significant differences in seed width. The species from the genus Ganoderma are known to be extremely important macrofungi in fundamental biological, medicinal, and socioeconomic aspects. The present communication describes the brief morphological description, macro- and microscopic details, and chemical constituents of the representatives of five species of Ganoderma mushroom collected from different sites in Vietnamese National Parks. These species were Ganoderma colossus, G. Neojaponicum, G. Cattienensis, G. Lucidum, and G. Applanatum. This study reports twelve species of cladoniicolous fungi from Turkey. Nine of these taxa, i.e. Abrothallus cladoniae R.Sant. And D.Hawksw., Epicladonia stenospora (Harm.) D.Hawksw., Lichenosticta alcicornaria (Linds.) D.Hawksw., Lichenoconium aeruginosum Diederich, M.Brand, van den Boom and Lawrey, Phoma foliaceiphila Diederich, Kocourk. And Etayo, Scutula cladoniicola Alstrup and D.Hawksw., Sphaerellothecium cladoniicola E.S. Hansen and Alstrup, Syzygospora bachmannii Diederich and M.S.Christ., and Taeniolella beschiana Diederich, are new records for Turkey. A key to these 12 species of lichenicolous fungi on Cladonia species is provided.

Inocybe Kohistanensis, A New Species From Swat, Pakistan, Sana Jabeen, Ishtiaq Ahmad, Abdur Rashid, Abdul Khalid

Turkish Journal of Botany

Inocybe kohistanensis, a new species, is described from Swat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, on the basis of morphological characters as well as molecular phylogenetic analyses. The new species is characterized by a fibrillose reddish brown pileus, pruinose stipe with a prominent marginate bulb, and nodular spores. Sequences from the internal transcribed spacer region suggest that I. Kohistanensis is distinct from all other Inocybe species sampled.
