Supramolecular Assembly In Short Peptide Systems For Selective Metabolite Recognition And Drug Nanoencapsulation, Maithreyi Ramakrishnan Jun 2026

Supramolecular Assembly In Short Peptide Systems For Selective Metabolite Recognition And Drug Nanoencapsulation, Maithreyi Ramakrishnan

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Short peptides can form adaptive supramolecular assemblies, and understanding how minimal sequences organize around neurometabolites or hydrophobic cancer drugs enables the rational design of functional materials. This thesis combines molecular dynamics with experimental validation to establish design rules linking peptide sequence to emergent structure and function. Chapter 1 outlines the molecular determinants governing peptide assembly. Chapter 2 reviews computational workflows that reveal sequence-dependent conformations and supramolecular organization. Chapter 3 applies these principles to Dynamic Peptide Libraries which identify tetrapeptides that selectively interact with neurometabolites. Chapter 4 extends the same interaction-driven framework to design tryptophan-rich pentapeptides that co-assemble with kinase inhibitors …

Stereospecific Cross-Coupling Reactions Of Enantioenriched Secondary Alkyltricyclohexyltin Nucleophiles, Meruyert Binayeva Feb 2024

Stereospecific Cross-Coupling Reactions Of Enantioenriched Secondary Alkyltricyclohexyltin Nucleophiles, Meruyert Binayeva

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Transition metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions have evolved into a remarkable instrument for the formation of new bonds, and have significantly impacted how we approach to access complex organic molecules. Palladium is currently one of the most popular elements for catalytic applications due to its ability to facilitate powerful carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom couplings. Traditional Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions have primarily concentrated on C(sp2)-C(sp2) cross-couplings, yielding planar products. Considering the use of C(sp3) nucleophiles would offer a viable control of the three dimensional arrangement in molecules. Herein, the first chapter details the history and development of Pd-catalyzed Stille cross-coupling reactions. The use of configurationally …

The Microscopical Evidence Traces Analysis Of Household Dust And Its Statistical Significance As A Definitive Identification Technique, Stephanie Polifroni Sep 2022

The Microscopical Evidence Traces Analysis Of Household Dust And Its Statistical Significance As A Definitive Identification Technique, Stephanie Polifroni

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Evidence found at crime scenes is used to assist in creating a link the suspect, the victim, and the scene. As stated by the Locard’s Principle, every contact leaves a trace, that evidence can be used to link together an investigation. Traces are collected in hopes that they can be identified and associated to an individual or individuals to help solve that particular crime. However, the strongest conclusion for evidence traces is an association to a source, and unless a physical match of some kind is found, an individualization cannot be established even when known sample is available. However, having …

Approach To Dual Base And Sugar Modification Of Adenosine, Cross-Dehydrogenative Coupling Reactions Of Quinazolinones, And A Novel Entry To Carbazolones And Indolones, Dellamol Sebastian Jun 2022

Approach To Dual Base And Sugar Modification Of Adenosine, Cross-Dehydrogenative Coupling Reactions Of Quinazolinones, And A Novel Entry To Carbazolones And Indolones, Dellamol Sebastian

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Analogues of purine nucleosides are of interest due to their antiviral, antibacterial, and anticancer properties. Although there are large number of reports on C6-modification of 6-chloropurine nucleosides with alkyl amines via the SNAr reaction pathway, there are fewer reports on comparable reactions with aryl amines. Notably, SNAr reactions of 6-chloropurine nucleosides with electron-deficient aryl amines is a relatively understudied area. A simple method has been developed for the SNAr reactions of 6-chloropurine ribonucleosides with electron-deficient-, electron-rich-, and electronically neutral aryl amines. Under the developed conditions, SNAr reactions of 2’,3’,5’-O-(tert …

Water-Responsive, Peptide-Based Crystals, Roxana Piotrowska Jun 2021

Water-Responsive, Peptide-Based Crystals, Roxana Piotrowska

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Water-responsive (WR) materials  that exert significant forces in response to changing hydration levels are receiving growing interest due to their potential applications, including use as actuators for energy harvesting devices, artificial muscles, and soft robotics. Reported examples include biological and synthetic materials with abilities to efficiently convert the chemical potential of water into mechanical actuations. However, these systems are typically complex, and consequently, their WR mechanisms are not well-understood thus preventing rational design and optimization. This thesis demonstrates the design and development of WR peptide crystals that mimic and enhance understanding of natural WR systems. The peptide crystals, with intrinsic …

Creating Content For A Healthy New Life, Valeria C. Borja Lopez Jun 2020

Creating Content For A Healthy New Life, Valeria C. Borja Lopez

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Creating Content for a Healthy New Life is a project consisting of the development of a web page to connect holistic practitioners to people. This page will also allow for the promotion and sale of Ayurvedic Skincare products and services. For the capstone project, I developed a business model for the enterprise. This model offers an educational component by educating our customers to understand the importance of using holistic approaches rather than traditional ones. For this, two videos were developed to educate customers about Ayurveda and the science behind the proposed products and services. I am an experienced Holistic Practitioner, …

Beyond The Obvious: Emerging Contaminants And Biogeochemistry As A Cause And Solution For Nitrogen Pollution, Stephanie L. Devries Feb 2017

Beyond The Obvious: Emerging Contaminants And Biogeochemistry As A Cause And Solution For Nitrogen Pollution, Stephanie L. Devries

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Following a comprehensive review of the occurrence and impacts of antibiotics and related pharmaceutical compounds on the terrestrial N-cycle, three experiments were performed to explore the topic of biogeochemistry as a source or a sink for N-pollution. The first of these experiments addresses the question of whether environmentally relevant concentrations of antibiotics (µg·kg-1) have a significant effect on denitrification or N2O production, a question that has not been well addressed in previous studies. Having determined that there is a significant shift, the second study aims to comprehensively follow changes to soil N pools and N2 …
