Effects Of Bovine Maternal Nutrient Restriction On Offspring Microrna And Mrna Expression And Muscle Fiber Type, Nikole E. Ineck May 2020

Effects Of Bovine Maternal Nutrient Restriction On Offspring Microrna And Mrna Expression And Muscle Fiber Type, Nikole E. Ineck

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

For producers in more temperate areas, such as the Intermountain West, poor nutrition during the second trimester of gestation is common due to seasonal changes in forage and nutrient availability. The majority of muscle fibers are formed and adipogenesis is initiated in the second trimester, making it a critical time for skeletal muscle and adipose development in beef cattle. However, the extent to which these changes persist in the offspring postnatally is unknown. In this study, maternal nutrition was restricted during the second trimester in order to analyze the effects of maternal nutrient restriction on offspring skeletal muscle growth. Offspring …

Identification Of Non-Nuclear Receptors For 1,25-Dihydroxyvitamin D3 In Chick Kidney And Brain, Zhiheng Jia May 1998

Identification Of Non-Nuclear Receptors For 1,25-Dihydroxyvitamin D3 In Chick Kidney And Brain, Zhiheng Jia

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25(OH)2D3) has been shown to mediate the rapid, non-nuclear stimulation of calcium and phosphate transport in chick intestine through binding to a receptor localized in the basal lateral membrane. By using an antibody to the N-terminus of the membrane receptor, studies were undertaken to determine whether a comparable protein exists in kidney and brain, and whether it is present in a particular subcellular fraction.

The first step was to establish fractionation protocols to separate subcellular organelles as judged by marker enzyme analyses. Differential centrifugation and Percoll gradient fractions were prepared from chick kidney …

Range Nutrition In An Arid Region, Lorin E. Harris

Faculty Honor Lectures

On the mountains, in the valleys, on the foothills and on the deserts of the Intermountain West grow millions of tons of vegetation. The chemical energy stored bv these plants is a potential source of useful energy for man. Some of the plant material has been used for fuel, other has been used as a source of lumber, chemicals, and paper, but the major part of this vast reservO'ir is useful to man because it is utilized by livestock. This native vegetation is grazed by livestock and they convert the plant energy to' high quality, desirable food energy for man.
