Rearing Orphan Kangaroos, G L. Ward
Rearing Orphan Kangaroos, G L. Ward
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
LICENCES are required in Western Australia if certain kangaroos and all species of wallabies are kept in captivity, but orphaned young joeys often need care and hand feeding before they can be released to fend for themselves.
Emergency Chlorination Of Farm Water Supplies, H C. Hughes
Emergency Chlorination Of Farm Water Supplies, H C. Hughes
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
TOWARDS the end of summer (and especially in a drought) the risk of water in dams, soaks, wells or tanks becoming polluted is increased.
Bore water is much less likely to be affected unless the bore is poorly sited near a farm building, such as a shearing or milking shed, a pig pen, or a septic tank system.
The Changing Fertiliser Industry, Edgar Noel Fitzpatrick
The Changing Fertiliser Industry, Edgar Noel Fitzpatrick
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Background to current developments in the Australian fertiliser industry.
FOR many years superphosphate was the basic fertiliser used by most farmers in Western Australia.
During the 1950's some farmers began to use sulphate of ammonia, and recently urea and anhydrous ammonia have become important.
W.A. Dairying : Progress In 42 Years, Maurice C. Cullity
W.A. Dairying : Progress In 42 Years, Maurice C. Cullity
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
From hardship and elementary standards, West Australian dairying has developed into a consolidated industry with larger herds, increased output and high quality production.
The changes he has seen are reviewed by Mr. M. Cullity who retired last month from the position of Chief of the Division of Dairying, after 42 years of service to the industry.
THE history of Western Australia's dairying industry has been a story of struggle against hardship, marketing problems and adverse criticism.
In spite of this the industry has steadily grown and greatly improved its efficiency.
Rearing Dairy Calves, R A. Bettenay
Rearing Dairy Calves, R A. Bettenay
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
ON Western Australian dairy farms the wastage rate of dairy cows is probably more than 20 per cent, and this, coupled with the tendency towards bigger herds, means that well over half of the heifer calves born should be reared for herd replacements.
Piglet Anaemia : An Iron Deficiency Disease, F C. Wilkinson
Piglet Anaemia : An Iron Deficiency Disease, F C. Wilkinson
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
PIGLETS are born usually with only about 40 mg. of iron in their bodies and the sow's milk only supplies about 1 mg. of the 7 mg. needed each day by the piglets.
This means that if the piglets do not get additional iron, the body stores soon become depleted and anaemia occurs at about one to three weeks of age.
Silage Making In The Lower South-West, A L. Hamilton
Silage Making In The Lower South-West, A L. Hamilton
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
The history of silage making in the South-West of Western Australia is typified by periods of relatively intense activity followed by periods when the activity virtually ceases.
The recent rise in popularity has followed the introduction of machinery or methods which tend to make the job easier to handle, or which improve the quality of the silage.

Iron Deficiency Of Oats In The Lower South West, Edgar Noel Fitzpatrick, R. Sprivulis
Iron Deficiency Of Oats In The Lower South West, Edgar Noel Fitzpatrick, R. Sprivulis
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Oats grown on the acid peaty sands of the West and South Coastal areas of Western Australia develop iron deficiency.
This deficiency can be cured by spraying with iron sulphate. A 2 to 4 per cent, solution can be applied through a low volume spray without damage to the plants. The spray should be repeated when deficiency symptoms reappear.
Growing oats on these soils is not recommended.

Cobalt : Its Use To Control Wasting Disease, Laurence C. Snook
Cobalt : Its Use To Control Wasting Disease, Laurence C. Snook
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
FOR many years it was assumed that in Western Australia cobalt deficient areas were restricted to a coastal fringe which rarely extended more than 20 miles inland.
This has proved a costly false assumption. During recent years cobalt deficiency has been diagnosed over extensive areas of inland country.

The Open Range System Of Pig Farming, S R. Dunstan
The Open Range System Of Pig Farming, S R. Dunstan
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THERE are several satisfactory systems which can be employed in planning a piggery, but under West Australian conditions, the paddock system has much to commend it.
Grazing admits an animal to the healthy influences of sunlight and stimulates exercise. The digestive processes of the pig are also stimulated and this helps to bring about more efficient utilisation of the feed.
Selecting A Herd Sire, R A. Bettenay
Selecting A Herd Sire, R A. Bettenay
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THERE is now ample evidence that most of the differences in production between herds are determined by feeding and management, with differences in genetic merit playing a relatively minor role.
It seems that the quickest way to increase production is by improved feeding, whilst in some herds much production is being lost by faulty milking techniques.
Pickled Wheat Is Safe For Sheep : Feeding Trial, J Craig, H. P. Dwyer
Pickled Wheat Is Safe For Sheep : Feeding Trial, J Craig, H. P. Dwyer
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
FARMERS are often left with a surplus of pickled grain from seed wheat supplies. Many would like to feed this to their stock, but do not do so because they think there may be a risk of poisoning.
This trial was designed to investigate the effects of feeding such grain to sheep.
Saving Labour In Feeding Calves, R A. Bettenay
Saving Labour In Feeding Calves, R A. Bettenay
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
PRESENT day values are such that no farmer can afford not to dispose of his calves to the best advantage.
With the lighter breeds this might still mean vealing all bull calves within a week of birth, but with heavier breeds it is now more economical to keep all calves until they are at least six to eight months old.
Foster-Mothering Of Calves, Maurice C. Cullity, K. W. Simes
Foster-Mothering Of Calves, Maurice C. Cullity, K. W. Simes
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
"SAVE those calves" is a slogan which has been used frequently in propaganda to reduce the slaughter of heifers when it is thought that the supply of replacement animals to our dairy herds might be unduly low.
Although there is no fear of this at present, the wastage of calves both heifers and bulls, in Western Australia is unduly large.
