Some Aspects Of Vitamin E And Collagen Relationships, Robert Glenn Brown Aug 1964

Some Aspects Of Vitamin E And Collagen Relationships, Robert Glenn Brown

Doctoral Dissertations

(From the Introduction)

Several clinical workers in the later 1930's reported that vitamin E was of positive therapeutic value in the treatment of primary fibrositis. At that time a role for vitamin E in connective tissue metabolism was proposed. This role was never substantiated because of the failure of other groups to repeat the original work. It was subseqently realized that the original experiments were very poorly controlled and there was no real way of knowing whether or not the results obtained were due only to chance. Since that time the idea of a vitamin E, collagen relationship …

Nutrition Field Observations And Experiences In The State Of Indiana, Willena Stone Beagle

Masters Theses

This report is based upon the student's experiences and observations during a seven weeks' period of field training with the Indiana State Board of Health. The Division of Nutrition provided. the guidance for the field experiences. Approximately five weeks and two days were spent in the central office, four days in the Northeastern Branch Office, one day in the Northwestern Branch Office, and three days with the local nutritionist in Marian County. It was impossible to learn the entire health program in a limited period of time; therefore, an attempt is made to describe the program as it appeared during …

A Report Of Nutrition Field Observations And Experiences In The Commonwealth Of Pennsylvania, Jo Ann Bond

Masters Theses

(From the Introduction)

The purpose of the field experience was to supplement the student's on-campus academic education in nutrition and to broaden her concept of public health work at the state and local levels. The specific objectives of the student were: (1) to study the organization, administration, and functions of an official public health agency, (2) to determine how nutrition programs are planned and executed, (3) to learn how nutrition is integrated into the overall public health program, and (4) to develop an appreciation for the programs and services of other disciplines in the public health agency.

A Pilot Study Of The Relation Of Selected Nutritional Factors To Skeletal Age Of Galactosemic Children, Jessie Merle Harper Jun 1964

A Pilot Study Of The Relation Of Selected Nutritional Factors To Skeletal Age Of Galactosemic Children, Jessie Merle Harper

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A pilot study was conducted in which twelve children with galactosemia were selected to determine if a correlation existed between the dietary intake of calories, protein, calcium and vitamin D, and the skeletal age of each child. The selected nutrients were compared with the Recommended Daily allowances as revised in 1963. The skeletal ages were determined by the standards as established by Greulich and Pyle (36).

The medical records of these twelve galactosemic children were studied for previous data pertinent to their growth and development. The data which were especially emphasized were: nutritional information and skeletal radiological reports. To receive …

A Study Of The Effect Of Varying Serum Phenylalanine Levels On Changes In Intelligence Quotient, Darlene Imai Manullang Jun 1964

A Study Of The Effect Of Varying Serum Phenylalanine Levels On Changes In Intelligence Quotient, Darlene Imai Manullang

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Data from thirty medical records of phenylketonuric children under treatment were investigated to determine at which serum phenylalanine level (0-3.9 mg. %, 4-7.9 mg %, 8-11.9 mg. %, greater than 12 mg. %) there would be the greatest increase in intelligence. The children involved in the study were divided into the following groups according to the age dietary treatment was initiated: 0 through 5 months, 6 through 11 months, 12 through 23 months, and over 2 years of age.

Among 6 patients who were placed on the diet during the first 5 months of life, it appears that the optimal …

A Workshop Plan For Food Service Supervisors In Seventh-Day Adventist Institutions In Mexico, Marian Anne Fedak Jun 1964

A Workshop Plan For Food Service Supervisors In Seventh-Day Adventist Institutions In Mexico, Marian Anne Fedak

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

It is desirable in any dietary service to produce high quality and nutritious food within reasonable cost. Any training which the food service supervisor may receive in administration, nutrition and food preparation will aid in achieving this goal. No training program for food service supervisors in Seventh-day Adventist institutions in Mexico has been available. The plan for a two week workshop for food service supervisors was thus developed as a step toward meeting this need.

Principles on techniques of conducting workshops have been discussed.

An investigation was made into Mexican agricultural trends, food habits and nutritional status to present information …

A Study Of Certain Convenience Foods With Reference To Purchaser, Cost, And Nutritive Value, Naomi Jensen May 1964

A Study Of Certain Convenience Foods With Reference To Purchaser, Cost, And Nutritive Value, Naomi Jensen

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The various activities associated with the provision of food for feeding of the family traditionally have been functions of the home . One of the major enterprises of the homemaker in past years was to plan , produce or purchase , preserve , and prepare food daily for the family. The role of the homemaker today has changed from one of producer to one of purchaser. Hence, at least weekly, the selection of food at the market place involves not only the best use of her time but wise expenditure of her food budget. The market is changing so rapidly …

Weight Reduction Problems As Shown By A Review Of Literature And A Survey Of Weight Reduction Groups, Naomi Jensen May 1964

Weight Reduction Problems As Shown By A Review Of Literature And A Survey Of Weight Reduction Groups, Naomi Jensen

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

America has been known throughout its history as a land of plenty . Enough food to feed a rapidly increasing population has been produced continuously . Scientific progress has made it possible for fewer farm workers to produce larger amounts of food both from increased acreage and increased yield per acre . With today's nationwide network of distribution , these foods have been made available throughout all sections of the country . Modern science and industry have taken over many of the processing duties of the homemaker and have done it on a less expensive and a much safer scale. …

Neutral 17-Ketosteroids And 17, 21-Dihydroxy-20-Ketosteroids In Urine Of University Students, Shon-Hua Yu May 1964

Neutral 17-Ketosteroids And 17, 21-Dihydroxy-20-Ketosteroids In Urine Of University Students, Shon-Hua Yu

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Degenerative disease of old age such as atherosclerosis and cerebral hemorrhage appear to be related to abnormal lipid metabolism. Many investigators have studied the role of steroid hormones on lipid and cholesterol metabolism in rats and chickens. The results have consistantly indicated that both corticosteroids and sex hormones play an important role in the regulation of lipid and cholesterol metabolism, in vivo. Serum cholesterol values in humans have been decreased by estrogens, while androgen administration tends to increase circulating cholesterol. Estrogens have been shown to decrease circulating cholesterol and prevent cholesterol-induced coronary atherosclerosis in chickens. A study of the …

Studies On The Relationship Of Serum Lipids And Dietary Intake Of Fat In Senior Citizens, Lina Wu May 1964

Studies On The Relationship Of Serum Lipids And Dietary Intake Of Fat In Senior Citizens, Lina Wu

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A number of research studies have shown that aging is a continuous and cumulative process of biological changes which frequently result in cardiovascular diseases in the older age group. Degenerative diseases of old age such as atherosclerosis and coronary artery diseases appear to be related to abnormal lipid metabolism. The findings which indicate serum cholesterol values rise with age are by no means unanimous. The combined evidence in the literature points out that serum cholesterol of newborn infants is low, then rises steadily with age in both sexes from adolescence through middle age with a higher value in males than …

A Comparative Gas Chromatographic Study Of Venison And Beef Flavors, K. Prakash Reddy May 1964

A Comparative Gas Chromatographic Study Of Venison And Beef Flavors, K. Prakash Reddy

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Venison is an important food item in the diet of the people of the United States. Deer is hunted both as sport and for food. Annually, nearly 180,000 hunters go afield in Utah in search of deer. Over 130,000 animals are killed which amounts to an annual harvest of over 15,000,000 pounds of dressed venison. This contributes about 10 1/2 million dollars to the economy of the state from licenses, lodgings, transportation, and other expenses of hunting.

Weaning Lambs Under Pastoral Conditions, H Suijdendorp, L. Parsons Jan 1964

Weaning Lambs Under Pastoral Conditions, H Suijdendorp, L. Parsons

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

IN the summer rainfall region of the pastoral areas lambs are too often born too late to ensure their survival.

In good seasons with a fair measure of winter rain more late lambs will survive, but losses are still serious. The only solution to this problem is to make sure lambs drop in May-June.

But the presence of late and often unmarked lambs at mating time is a disturbing influence, which makes it hard to advance the established mating pattern.

Silage Making In The Lower South-West, A L. Hamilton Jan 1964

Silage Making In The Lower South-West, A L. Hamilton

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The history of silage making in the South-West of Western Australia is typified by periods of relatively intense activity followed by periods when the activity virtually ceases.

The recent rise in popularity has followed the introduction of machinery or methods which tend to make the job easier to handle, or which improve the quality of the silage.

Piglet Anaemia : An Iron Deficiency Disease, F C. Wilkinson Jan 1964

Piglet Anaemia : An Iron Deficiency Disease, F C. Wilkinson

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

PIGLETS are born usually with only about 40 mg. of iron in their bodies and the sow's milk only supplies about 1 mg. of the 7 mg. needed each day by the piglets.

This means that if the piglets do not get additional iron, the body stores soon become depleted and anaemia occurs at about one to three weeks of age.

Pigs Have A Place In The Dairying Areas, P Mcnamara Jan 1964

Pigs Have A Place In The Dairying Areas, P Mcnamara

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Pig-keeping could become a much more important feature on South-West dairy farms in the future with the enterprise as a definite farm-unit having a considerable effect on income.

There are indications also that the collection of bulk skim milk and whey for pig feeding will increase in the future. This could make way for the efficient specialist operating large pig raising units close to the source of supply.

In this article. Pig Husbandry Adviser P. McNamara, B.A. (Cantab.) examines pig-keeping in the South-West and makes suggestions on the part that pigs can play on the modem dairy farm.

The Importance Of Milk Production In Beef Cattle, W J O Wilkie Jan 1964

The Importance Of Milk Production In Beef Cattle, W J O Wilkie

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

IN recent years there has been a great deal of comment on the need for "dairy blood" in the State's beef industry.

There seems to have been some confused thinking on this matter. There is no doubt at all that a beef dam should be able to produce enough milk to do its calf well.

But there is nothing to gain and a great deal to lose if too much emphasis is placed on milking qualities without reference to beef qualities.

Range Feeding Of Cotton By-Products In The Kimberleys, John Hubert Auty Jan 1964

Range Feeding Of Cotton By-Products In The Kimberleys, John Hubert Auty

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Commercial cotton production has started in the Ord River area and by-products of the industry will soon be available for stock feeding in the surrounding pastoral areas.

Cotton seed and cotton seed meal will cause digestive upsets if fed in any quantity to horses, poultry or pigs.

Ruminants have no trouble in handling the material and the Kununurra ginnery could supply a useful protein supplement for Kimberley cattle.

First Three Year Average Report For The West Australian Random Sample Laying Test Covering The 4th, 5th And 6th Tests, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia Jan 1964

First Three Year Average Report For The West Australian Random Sample Laying Test Covering The 4th, 5th And 6th Tests, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

FIRST THREE-YEAR-AVERAGE REPORT FOR THE WEST AUSTRALIAN RANDOM SAMPLE LAYING TEST COVERING THE 4th, 5th AND 6th TESTS

Despite every effort made to provide all entries in individual tests with a uniform environment it is still possible for a particular entry's performance not to be a true indication of its inherent ability.

Random Sample Test results should therefore be viewed on a long term, annual, consecutive basis. If the yearly results for a given hatchery are grouped together and averaged over a period of several years irregularities in performance due to factors other than genetic worth are minimised and a …
