Masters Theses

This report is based upon observations and experiences during a seven weeks' period of field training with the Division of Nutrition in the Wisconsin State Board of Health in Madison, Wisconsin.

The purpose of the field training was to supplement the on-campus academic education in Public Health Nutrition with practical nutrition experiences and observation. More specifically, the purpose was to help the student-nutritionist gain an understanding of the function of a state nutrition staff that works through a decentralized, district organization.

A varied program was planned by the Director of the Division of Nutrition to help the student accomplish these …

Interrelationships Between Sulfate Metabolism And Tocopherols In The Weanling Rat, Young Ping Chin Dec 1961

Interrelationships Between Sulfate Metabolism And Tocopherols In The Weanling Rat, Young Ping Chin

Masters Theses

There have been numerous investigations in which reported observations point toward the existence of metabolic interrelationships between tocopherols, the sulfur-containing amino acids, and inorganic sulfur. In previous work, this laboratory has used mixtures partially composed of oxidized casein and casein to produce a protein source having a low methionine content and lending variation with respect to inorganic sulfate. Alpha protein, a purified soybean protein, is characteristically similar to oxidized casein in that both substances have a low sulfur amino acid content. Due to the expenses involved in the laboratory use of oxidized casein, the present investigation was undertaken to determine …

The Interrelationship Of Tocopherols And Sulfur Metabolism, Betty June Pendergrass Aug 1961

The Interrelationship Of Tocopherols And Sulfur Metabolism, Betty June Pendergrass

Masters Theses

The metabolic effects of the tocopherols and or sulfur have been inadvertently linked through research findings. Although not initially postulated, a relationship between vitamin B and sulfur has turned up in such phenomena as prevention of dietary hepatic necrosis, muscular dystrophy, erythrocyte hemolysis; and structural alteration of mucopolysaccharides, proteins, and lipoproteins. The relationship between vitamin E and sulfur remains ill-defined at present; the available information has been obtained as a by-product of research efforts oriented toward other goals. However, an increasing body of evidence indicates that significant behavioral interactions may occur. The present investigation was designed to evaluate possible interrelationships …

Effect Of Isocaloric Unsaturated Fats On Serum Cholesterol Of Patients Treated With Hypocholesterolemic Agents, Yvonne Marie Hatley Jun 1961

Effect Of Isocaloric Unsaturated Fats On Serum Cholesterol Of Patients Treated With Hypocholesterolemic Agents, Yvonne Marie Hatley

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The effect of a high unsaturated-low saturated fat diet on serum cholesterol levels were studied. Subjects were clinic patients receiving the following hypocholesterolmeic agents: triparanol (MER-29), diildothyroacetic acid (Diac), dextrothyroxine (d-T4) and 3-methoxy-16, alpha-methyl-1,3,5, (10)-estratriene-16 beta, 17 beta-diol (Manvene or Anvene).

Fifteen hypercholesterolemic patients, eleven of whom were diabetic, were placed on diets with prescribed amounts of unsaturated fat. The caloric distribution was 40 per cent carbohydrate, 20 per cent protein, and 40 per cent fat. The level of unsaturated fat was 70 per cent of the total fat.

Seventy-one per cent of the patients on the hypocholesterolemic …

A Study Of Diets Low In Phenylalanine And Tyrosine For Collagen Disease, Eva H. Crites Jun 1961

A Study Of Diets Low In Phenylalanine And Tyrosine For Collagen Disease, Eva H. Crites

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In 1957, Nishimura 74 made a startling proposition that linked collagen disease with hereditary metabolic defects. This defect was stated to be in the metabolism of tyrosine. Based on this report, a pilot study was conducted in which six rheumatoid arthritis patients and one scleroderma case were treated with a low phenylalanine and tyrosine diet.

The diets supplied approximately 1500 calories and 36 grams of protein. No more than 1500 mg. combined phenylalanine and tyrosine were given in any one day. Lofenalac was used as the principle source of protein.

During the six week test period laboratory studies were carried …

A Review Of Drug Addiction And A Study Of Its Relation To Carbohydrate Metabolism, Eppie Chung Hartsuiker Jun 1961

A Review Of Drug Addiction And A Study Of Its Relation To Carbohydrate Metabolism, Eppie Chung Hartsuiker

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The specter of addiction eventually involves everyone of the community. It is a three-fold problem of socio-economic, psychological, and physiological factors. The least understood is the physiological or biochemical aspect of addiction.

It has been postulated that an upset in carbohydrate metabolism may be a biochemical cause of addiction. Several avenues were employed to investigate this possible cause of addiction.

  1. A diet survey was conducted and revealed a greater consumption of refined carbohydrates, confections and alcoholic beverages in addicts.

  2. Five-hour oral glucose tolerance tests were performed on 7 addicts and 12 non-addicts. These tests revealed that there were decreased glucose …

Studies On Venison Quality: Flavor Studies; Effect Of Methods Of Thawing, Kind And Level Of Fat, And Degree Of Doneness, Grace J. Smith May 1961

Studies On Venison Quality: Flavor Studies; Effect Of Methods Of Thawing, Kind And Level Of Fat, And Degree Of Doneness, Grace J. Smith

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Venison represents an important resource in this area. The average number of deer killed in Utah during hunting season of the ten-year period, 1940 to 1950, was over 50,000 animals annually according to the Utah State Fish and Game Department. For the period from 1950 to 1960 this figure has increased to over 100,000 animals. In terms of dressed weight, 100,000 animals would yield an estimated 8,000,000 pounds of meat. Neighboring states also produce large numbers of deer. This pictures venison not only as an important resource but as one rapidly increasing in importance.

Before the recent advent of locker …

Essential Amino Acid Composition Of A Balanced Chick Diet, Donald Christensen Dobson May 1961

Essential Amino Acid Composition Of A Balanced Chick Diet, Donald Christensen Dobson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The scientific balancing of diets has resulted in a series of studies to determine a standard for amino acid adequacy of a chick ration. These studies have shown that some amino acids are required in a chick diet more than others; they are termed "essential amino acids". Proteins used in formulating rations vary widely in essential amino acid content. Because of this variation, it can no longer be said that a diet with so much protein (N x 6.25) is adequate to meet the chick's need for optimum performance. Many papers have been published showing the results of experiments for …

The Influence Of Nitrogen And Phosphorus Supplements On The Composition Of The Ruminal Ingesta Of Sheep Grazing Desert Range Forage, James G. Morris May 1961

The Influence Of Nitrogen And Phosphorus Supplements On The Composition Of The Ruminal Ingesta Of Sheep Grazing Desert Range Forage, James G. Morris

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Approximately 46 million acres or 88 per cent of the land area of the state of Utah has been classified by Reuss and Blanch (1951) as "range land open for grazing." Although some of this area cannot be grazed because of inaccessibility, lack of water, poison plants, and similar factors, it is estimated that some 40 million acres or 78 per cent of the total land area is available for grazing. Most of this grazing land is federally owned (73 per cent), while only 22 per cent is privately held, and 5 per cent is state owned.

Pickled Wheat Is Safe For Sheep : Feeding Trial, J Craig, H. P. Dwyer

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

FARMERS are often left with a surplus of pickled grain from seed wheat supplies. Many would like to feed this to their stock, but do not do so because they think there may be a risk of poisoning.

This trial was designed to investigate the effects of feeding such grain to sheep.

Why Poor Prices For Pigs?, P C. Beck Jan 1961

Why Poor Prices For Pigs?, P C. Beck

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

A rapid increase in pig numbers and an unfavourable export situation have precipitated the present depression in the pig industry. Concentration on quality production and a gradual reduction in numbers should bring back a more stable situation, says Dairy Division pig specialist P. Beck. Big fluctuations in the pig population—the basic cause of cycles of boom and depression in the industry—would be avoided if more farmers adopted a fixed farm level policy towards the industry.

Can Worms Be Controlled By Correct Feeding?, Laurence C. Snook Jan 1961

Can Worms Be Controlled By Correct Feeding?, Laurence C. Snook

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THE extensive losses which result from the ravages of internal parasites are a matter of serious concern.

Livestock owners realise this all too well and welcome advice concerning control measures which can be adopted. Unfortunately, it is not possible to give clear cut advice on the subject.

Much publicity is given to the use of drugs which will expel the worms. Various systems of strategic drenching have been developed.

It is well to remember, however, that drenching is only one of many methods which can be used to control worm infestation.

In this talk attention will be concentrated on experimental …

The list of fertilisers registered for the year commencing November 1, 1960, is set out herewith in tabular form.

Selecting A Herd Sire, R A. Bettenay Jan 1961

Selecting A Herd Sire, R A. Bettenay

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THERE is now ample evidence that most of the differences in production between herds are determined by feeding and management, with differences in genetic merit playing a relatively minor role.

It seems that the quickest way to increase production is by improved feeding, whilst in some herds much production is being lost by faulty milking techniques.

List Of Registered Stock Foods And Stock Licks 1960-61, H G. Cariss Jan 1961

ONE of the biggest costs in pig-meat production is feeding, and it is of vital importance for the farmer to understand what presents a balanced and economic ration, in order that he can take steps to achieve maximum efficiency.

Saving Labour In Feeding Calves, R A. Bettenay Jan 1961

Saving Labour In Feeding Calves, R A. Bettenay

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

PRESENT day values are such that no farmer can afford not to dispose of his calves to the best advantage.

With the lighter breeds this might still mean vealing all bull calves within a week of birth, but with heavier breeds it is now more economical to keep all calves until they are at least six to eight months old.
