Reel Into Fishing!: Providing A Recreational Fishing Education Program For Youth, Amelia Valente, Douglas R. Zemeckis, Lisa Morse, Gene Nigro

New Jersey is known as the Garden State, but with over 130 miles of Atlantic coastline, it also has very productive marine ecosystems that offer numerous opportunities for recreational marine fishing. The International Game Fish Association, a nonprofit organization committed to the conservation of game fish and the promotion of responsible, ethical angling practices, collaborated with Rutgers Cooperative Extension to host a youth educational program entitled Reel Into Fishing! The objective is to educate participants through hands-on engagement on ethical fishing practices and marine science to help develop the next generation of responsible anglers.

The intertidal zone of California’s Pacific coast is home to the marine snail known as Aplysia californica, an organism that has found use as a model in experiments focused on understanding the basis of learning and memory. Its simple nervous system consisting of easily identifiable neurons, its life span of a year, and a readily-accessed aquacultured source from the National Resource for Aplysia make it an excellent model for ontogenetic, neural, and behavioral studies. Phytoplankton are the autotrophic foundation of almost all marine ecosystems.
The flow of energy through an ecosystem is largely dependent how productivity moves through organisms of various sizes. For this reason, numerous studies have set out to quantify the respective contributions of these size-fractions to biomass and rates of primary production. This is done through field measurements of production or through mathematic models that infer production contributions from the easier field measured contributions to biomass. However, the accuracy of this method has been called into question. Can contributions to biomass really be used to accurately interpret contributions to production?
