In the report, we tried to go through concepts and organization of the database to provide an understanding of the system. Details of operation of the INMAGIC program itself have been left to the instruction manual which accompanies the software. The report includes information on getting started using the INMAGIC program with the literature database, on organization of the database, and on print formats useful with the reference data. The species list and subject lists are those that we now use for work on the database. Note that this is a very comprehensive database management system that permits sorting, searching, …

The 20-Hz Signals Of Finback Whales (Balaenoptera Physalus), William Watkins, Peter Tyack, Karen Moore, James Bird Dec 1986

The 20-Hz Signals Of Finback Whales (Balaenoptera Physalus), William Watkins, Peter Tyack, Karen Moore, James Bird

James E Bird

The 20-Hz signals of finback whales (Balaenoptera physalus) were analyzed from more than 25 years of recordings at a variety of geographic locations on near-surface hydrophones close to whales and on deep hydrophone systems. These signals were composed of 1-s pulses of sinusoidal waveform with downward sweeping frequency from approximately 23 to 18 Hz at variable source levels up to 186 dB (re: 1 microPa at 1 m), usually with slightly lower levels for the pulses at the beginning and end of sequences. These "20-Hz" pulses were produced in signal bouts (separated by more than 2 h) lasting as long …

Investigations Of The Potential Effects Of Underwater Noise From Petroleum Industry Activities On Feeding Humpback Whale Behavior, Charles Malme, Paul Miles, Peter Tyack, Christopher Clark, James Bird Dec 1984

Investigations Of The Potential Effects Of Underwater Noise From Petroleum Industry Activities On Feeding Humpback Whale Behavior, Charles Malme, Paul Miles, Peter Tyack, Christopher Clark, James Bird

James E Bird

This report presents the results of an investigation of the potential effects of underwater noise from petroleum industry activities on the behavior of feeding humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae). The objective of the study was to determine the nature and degree of any observed behavioral response to controlled sound exposure levels from industrial noise sources. The noise sources used were a single 100 cu. in. air gun and playback of sounds from selected petroleum industry activities. The playback sounds were obtained from tape recordings of drillship, drilling platform, production platform, semi-submersible drilling rig, and helicopter overflight noise. The work was performed …

Investigations Of The Potential Effects Of Underwater Noise From Petroleum Industry Activities On Migrating Gray Whale Behavior. Phase Ii: January 1984 Migration, Charles Malme, Paul Miles, Christopher Clark, Peter Tyack, James Bird Dec 1983

Investigations Of The Potential Effects Of Underwater Noise From Petroleum Industry Activities On Migrating Gray Whale Behavior. Phase Ii: January 1984 Migration, Charles Malme, Paul Miles, Christopher Clark, Peter Tyack, James Bird

James E Bird

The applied research discussed in detail in this report supplements the work performed during the 1983 southbound and northbound migrations of the gray whale, Eschrichtius robustus, in the Monterey, California region. The objective of both phases has been to determine the degree of behavioral response of migrating gray whales to acoustic stimuli associated with oil and gas exploration and development activities. The results of that earlier work were presented in Bolt Beranek and Newman Inc. Report No. 5366* This companion document extends the 1983 research effort, adding to the statistical data base through measurements of behavioral response of the January …

The California Gray Whale (Eschrichtius Robustus): A Review Of The Literature On Migratory And Behavioral Characteristics, James Bird Dec 1982

The California Gray Whale (Eschrichtius Robustus): A Review Of The Literature On Migratory And Behavioral Characteristics, James Bird

James E Bird

The literature search presented in Appendix A was performed to characterize the normal migratory behavior of the gray whale and to determine if introduced sound from a variety of sources, including offshore oil and gas development, would have an observable effect on that behavior. Because of the limited data on behavioral reaction of gray whales to noise and disturbance, we have also included in this literature review information on the behavioral reaction of other baleen whale species.
