Assessing The Relationship Between The Degree Of Static And Dynamic Quadricep Angle And Kinetic Asymmetry Index % In Females During The Follicular Phase Of Menstruation, Madeline Grace Poirier
Assessing The Relationship Between The Degree Of Static And Dynamic Quadricep Angle And Kinetic Asymmetry Index % In Females During The Follicular Phase Of Menstruation, Madeline Grace Poirier
All NMU Master's Theses
The quadriceps angle (q-angle) quantifies lateral pull on the knee. Females have greater static and dynamic q-angles due to anatomical factors including a wider pelvis and more lateral tibial tuberosity, which may influence ACL injury risk. The kinetic asymmetry index (KAI %) measures limb-to-limb differences in ground reaction force (GRF) impulses during dynamic tasks including countermovement jumps (CMJs), with values > 10% linked to injury risk. During the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle, fluctuating hormones increase joint laxity, further heightening biomechanical vulnerability in females.
This cross-sectional study examined the relationship between static and dynamic q-angle and KAI % in active, …

Kinematic Analysis Of Defensive Forms And Simple Riposte In Foil Fencing And Their Relationship To Target Accuracy, Hashem Adnan Alkilani Dr, Leena Adnan Husain Dr
Journal Articles
This study analyzed kinematic variables of defensive forms and simple riposte in foil fencing and their impact on target accuracy. Eight Jordanian national team fencers (four males, four females, mean age 16.87 ± 2.53 years) participated. Motion analysis was conducted using Contemplas software and Vicon Motus 10 software, with fencing touches recorded electronically. Descriptive statistics, Spearman’s correlation, and repeated measures ANOVA were applied. Results showed the fastest defensive reaction was diagonal defense (0.30s), while horizontal defense achieved the quickest successful touch (0.30s). Increased wrist velocity in the simple riposte after semi-circular defense improved accuracy. The study recommends competition-based training, sensory-cognitive …
The Effect Of Step Rate Training On Running Economy And Biomechanics, Nahir Negron-Fernandez
The Effect Of Step Rate Training On Running Economy And Biomechanics, Nahir Negron-Fernandez
All NMU Master's Theses
It is known that running economy is a determinant of running performance. Increased step rate has been correlated with improved running economy, but it is unknown whether these improvements can be maintained with chronic training. The purpose of this study was to determine if a step rate training intervention improves running economy and improves lower body kinetic factors in distance runners. Nine participants were randomly assigned to either an intervention group (n = 7) undergoing a 6-week supplemental training program, or a non-training control group (n = 2). The intervention group trained three times a week, running at a higher …
Transcutaneous Electrical Stimulation Does Not Decrease Torque Loss Over High Intensity Repetitions, Ian Koskinen
Transcutaneous Electrical Stimulation Does Not Decrease Torque Loss Over High Intensity Repetitions, Ian Koskinen
All NMU Master's Theses
Transcutaneous Electrical Stimulation, TENS, has been used widely as an analgesic and ergogenic aid for many years. Compared to other modalities of electrical stimulation, TENS has been shown to provide some benefits in exercise performance by reducing pain and increasing endurance in low intensity applications, such as time trial cycling or isometric endurance. While TENS has been shown to have a significant effect on exercise induced pain in individuals performing endurance activities, to my knowledge it has not been examined in high intensity contractions. 18 active young adults (age: 23.11 years ± 2.08, resistance training experience: 7.08 years ± 3.79, …

The Effects Of Exogenous Virilizing Testosterone On Strength Training And Self-Compassion In Transgender Nonbinary Individuals, Nadine Sikora
All NMU Master's Theses
Previous exercise science research has excluded transgender nonbinary individuals from their studies. Exercise has been shown to improve symptoms of depression and anxiety as well as improve body composition. Purpose: Identify the impacts of exogenous testosterone on relative strength and levels of self-compassion in transgender nonbinary individuals. Methods: Eighteen untrained individuals (6 transgender nonbinary, 6 ciswomen, and 6 cismen, mean age of 23.7 ± 3.5 years) were recruited and randomly assigned to an 8-week resistance training group or a non-exercise control group. Participants completed a 12-question survey of self-compassion followed by, assessment of strength for chest and leg …
Coordination Variability And Injury Risk In Experienced Collegiate Dancers, Emily Klinkman
Coordination Variability And Injury Risk In Experienced Collegiate Dancers, Emily Klinkman
All NMU Master's Theses
Dance is a sport that places a number of physical demands upon the human body, and injuries are a common occurrence in the sport. While it has not yet been linked to dance-related injury, coordination variability (CV) is a measure of how much movement strategy changes between repetitions of a task and low levels of CV have been linked to injury in other sports. This study aimed to determine the relationship between CV and dance injury in collegiate dancers. Eight (8) undergraduate student subjects were recruited from the dance major and minor, BFA major and minor, and recreational dancers who …
Resistance Training Recommendations For Cross Country Skiers To Improve Performance: A Systematic Review, Leo Hipp
All NMU Master's Theses
Cross country skiing is an endurance sport that requires complex physiological and biomechanical capabilities. In recent years, resistance training has become an essential requirement for success in cross country skiing due to the evolution of the sport. Although important for success in skiing, resistance training recommendations are not well defined within the literature. The purpose of this study was to provide resistance training recommendations for cross country skiers by performing a systematic review on the current literature related to cross country skiing performance and resistance training. Four electronic databases were searched systematically to obtain original articles in peer-reviewed journals addressing …

Changes In Balance And Joint Position Sense During A 12-Day High Altitude Trek: The British Services Dhaulagiri Medical Research Expedition, Sarah B. Clarke
Datasets
Postural control and joint position sense are essential for safely undertaking leisure and professional activities, particularly at high altitude. We tested whether exposure to a 12-day trek with a gradual ascent to high altitude impairs postural control and joint position sense. This was a repeated measures observational study of 12 military service personnel (28±4 years). Postural control (sway velocity measured by a portable force platform) during standing balance, a Sharpened Romberg Test and knee joint position sense were measured, in England (113m), and at 3 research camps (3619m, 4600m and 5140m) on a 12-day high altitude trek in the Dhaulagiri …

Rhabdomyolysis is the breakdown of muscle tissue causing myoglobin, creatine kinase, and other intracellular proteins and electrolytes to leak into circulation, disrupting cell homeostasis. Exertional rhabdomyolysis (ER) occurs after extremely rigorous physical training that could include high amounts of strenuous eccentric exercise. There has been an increase in reports for mild to severe ER as well as other musculoskeletal injuries as the popularity of extreme conditioning programs (e.g., CrossFit®) increases. Therefore, the main purposes of this investigation were to identify: primary risk factors associated with ER during CrossFit®, CrossFit® workouts that might induce a higher risk for the development of …
