Comparison Of Black And White Elderly Women On Muscle Mass Bone Mineral Density And Balance., Tyanez Jones

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Few studies have compared balance between aging black (BW) and white women (WW) and examined its relationship to muscle mass and bone mineral density (BMD). Nineteen BW and 56 WW between 60-91 years participated. Upper and lower body strength, body composition, BMD, volitional and non-volitional control of dynamic balance, and physical activity ratings were assessed. There were no differences in strength between the groups. A trend was reported for total body BMD (p=0.07). WW exhibited better control of rapid volitional movements, in the limits of stability and rhythmic weight shift tests. The relationships of strength and muscle mass to BMD …

The Cardiovascular Effects Of Resistance Exercise Training On Orthostatic Intolerance In Elderly Individuals., Lynn P. Rhea May 2001

The Cardiovascular Effects Of Resistance Exercise Training On Orthostatic Intolerance In Elderly Individuals., Lynn P. Rhea

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One of the age-related changes associated with normal aging is the inability to maintain normal blood pressure homeostasis, a common clinical condition known as orthostatic intolerance. There are little data on the effects of strength training in healthy adults and orthostatic intolerance, and only one study on strength training and elderly adults diagnosed with orthostatic intolerance. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effects of resistance training on the cardiovascular respones of elderly individuals during an orthostatic challenge.

Thirteen subjects were assigned to either a resistance (RES; n=7; 66±5 yrs.) or a control (CON; n=6; 71±6 …

Isokinetic Dynamometer Versus A Multi-Axial Stability Platform In The Proprioception And Strength Training Of The Peroneal Muscle Group, Eric Johnson

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Ankle injuries are the most common and frequent occurring injuries in sports today (Feuerbach, Grabiner & Koh, 1994). Ankle sprains usually occur in athletes that are participating in running or jumping activities. Injuries to the ankle joint represent about 20% of all sports related injuries, and 15% of all time lost injuries (Payne, Berg, & Latin, 1997). The majority of the sprains to the ankle occur to the lateral ligamentous structures due to the forcefully plantar flexion and inversion of the talocrural joint. This inversion mechanism accounts for 85% of all ankle sprains (Kinzey, Ingersoll, & Knight, 1997). Often after …

Influence Of Short-Term Endurance Exercise Training On Heart Rate Variability, Clarence Matthew Lee Jan 2001

Influence Of Short-Term Endurance Exercise Training On Heart Rate Variability, Clarence Matthew Lee

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this investigation was to determine if 8 exercise endurance training (ET) sessions over 2 weeks significantly alters cardiac autonomic modulation, as measured by heart rate variability (HRV). Twenty-four college-aged males were recruited for this study and were randomized into either an exercise group (EX; n=12) or a control group (CT; n=12). EX underwent 2 weeks of ET on a cycle-ergometer (frequency: four times/week; duration: 40 minutes; intensity 80-85% HRreserve), whereas CT was instructed not to alter their previous level of physical activity. Five-minute ECG tracings were collected for HRV under the following conditions: 5 minutes of paced …

Investigation Of The Differences Between Inertial And Cadence Effects On Neuromuscular Coordination During Cycling, Brian Svercauski Baum Jan 2001

Investigation Of The Differences Between Inertial And Cadence Effects On Neuromuscular Coordination During Cycling, Brian Svercauski Baum

LSU Master's Theses

Muscular activity and coordination may be influenced by movement speed and the inertial properties of the limbs. Some observed effects from investigations using cycling have been attributed to inertia, especially at greater pedaling speeds (cadences); however, in these investigations, movement speed and inertia were coupled. Therefore, the purpose of this experiment was to investigate and distinguish between the effects of cadence and inertial influences on lower extremity neuromuscular coordination during cycling. This was achieved by subjects cycling at different cadences and with different loads attached to the distal ends of their thighs. Electromyographic (EMG) data of seven lower extremity muscles …

The Time-Course Of Vascular Adaptations Following Localized Short Term Exercise Training, Jason David Allen

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This is a series of 3 experiments in the area of vasoreactivity. The first study investigated the stability and reproducibility of brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (BAFMD). Twenty-six healthy volunteers underwent 3 scans on 2 days, performed by 2 ultrasonographers, and analyzed by 2 readers. All subjects were tested between 7 and 11am after refraining from food and exercise. Average baseline diameter was 3.48±0.53mm, which increased to 3.71±0.57mm (6.58±4.15%) at peak dilation. ICCC's for days, testers and readers were 0.9188, 0.9394, and 0.8982 respectively. To detect a difference in vasoreactivity of 60% (two-tailed), e.g. 5% vasodilation versus 8% vasodilation, at 90% …

The Relationship Between Jealousy And Self-Esteem In Collegiate Athletes, Paula M. Parker Jan 2001

The Relationship Between Jealousy And Self-Esteem In Collegiate Athletes, Paula M. Parker

Legacy ETDs

Previous research has found contradictory results when examining the possible relationship between jealousy and self-esteem (Guerrero & Afifi, 1998, Mathes & Severa, 1981; Mikulincer, Bizman, & Aizenberg, 1989, Peretti & Pudowski, 1997; Stewart & Beatty, 1985; White, 1981). Jealousy has been most often researched in romantic relationships (Peretti & Pudowski, 1997; Salovey & Rodin, 1986) and social comparison situations (Bers & Rodin, 1984, Mikulincer, Bizman, & .Aizenberg, 1989). Few studies have examined jealousy in an athletic setting. Sport jealousy has received little attention because until recently, there was no reliable instrument to measure jealousy in sport. Pease (1987) investigated the …

Determining The Termination Percentage Of Heart Rate Maximum For Submaximal Testing, Julia A. Valentour Jan 2001

Determining The Termination Percentage Of Heart Rate Maximum For Submaximal Testing, Julia A. Valentour

Legacy ETDs

BACKGROUND: In the Fourth Edition of the American College of Sports Medicine's Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription (1991). the protocol for the ACSM's submaximal bike test was to terminate the test at 65-70% of the age predicted maximal heart rate. In the Fifth Edition, this was changed to 85% of the age-predicted maximal heart rate.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to find out, by using the ACSM submaximal cycle ergometer test (see Appendix A) if the 85% heart rate maximum termination provides a more accurate estimate of maximal aerobic capacity than the 70% heart rate maximum termination. …
