The Effectiveness Of Using Video Modeling Techniques To Improve Motor Skills For Preschool Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Atya Abdullah Hadadi Dec 2018

The Effectiveness Of Using Video Modeling Techniques To Improve Motor Skills For Preschool Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Atya Abdullah Hadadi

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Beside the main syndromes of socialization and communication for individuals with autism spectrum disorders, they also have impairments in motor skills, such as ball skills (catching and throwing) and postural stability (standing and walking balance). The main objective of this dissertation is to improve motor skills for preschooler children with ASD through use of video-modeling techniques. A secondary objective of this research was to find a correlation between the development and improvement of ball skills and balance tasks. Twenty-six children with ASD were divided into two groups. Twenty-six children with ASD from 3-5 years old participated in two groups: one …

Effects Of Compex As A Warm Up For Glenohumeral Range Of Motion, Melissa Ericson, Elizabeth R. Neil, Kenneth E. Games Sep 2018

Effects Of Compex As A Warm Up For Glenohumeral Range Of Motion, Melissa Ericson, Elizabeth R. Neil, Kenneth E. Games

Journal of Sports Medicine and Allied Health Sciences: Official Journal of the Ohio Athletic Trainers Association

Purpose: Research regarding proper upper extremity warm-up protocols remains inconclusive, especially for electrical stimulation methods like the Compex Sport Elite® unit. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the acute effects of a single treatment of the Compex® using the pre-warm-up protocol on glenohumeral range of motion compared to a standardized upper body ergometer (UBE) warm-up protocol. Methods: Thirty-five healthy, young adults completed the study (19 men, 16 women; age=22±2y; height=172.1±9.4cm; mass=71.3±16.1kg; right-hand dominant=28; left-hand dominant=7). Participants came to the research laboratory on two occasions, at least 48 hours apart. Participants were randomly assigned the order to …

Effect Of Ankle Taping On Dynamic Balance And Perception Of Stability, William S. Gear, Megan J. Lundstrom Sep 2018

Effect Of Ankle Taping On Dynamic Balance And Perception Of Stability, William S. Gear, Megan J. Lundstrom

Journal of Sports Medicine and Allied Health Sciences: Official Journal of the Ohio Athletic Trainers Association

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the actual and perceived effect of taping on dynamic stability. Methods: 21 physically active subjects [12 females (age = 20.33 ± 1.44 years, height = 165 ± 0.05 cm, mass = 68.76 ± 12.69 kg), and 9 males (age = 21.33 ± 1.66 years, height = 180 ± 0.10 cm, mass = 86.54 ± 9.46 kg)] participated in this study. Dynamic stability and perception of stability were assessed barefoot and with the ankle taped. The taped ankle condition used a standard preventive tape application including two anchors, three stirrups, close …

Operant Conditioning Of Human Upper-Limb Stretch Reflexes, Ehsan Abolhasani Sep 2018

Operant Conditioning Of Human Upper-Limb Stretch Reflexes, Ehsan Abolhasani

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Operant conditioning of short-latency reflex (SLR) and H-reflex have been investigated in animals and humans. We modified previously established protocols for conditioning lower limb H-reflexes to up-condition the SLR in brachioradialis muscle and to investigate the effect of such conditioning on the long-latency response (LLR) of synergistic muscles. Our study included 12 healthy participants. Each participant took part in 3 baseline and 27 conditioning sessions in 6 weeks, followed by two additional sessions one month and two months after the last conditioning session. We found an increase in SLR magnitude in 50% of participants (by 15%±2.50). However, there was no …

The Immediate Influence Of Whole Body Vibration On Proprioceptive Precision, Sean Madill Aug 2018

The Immediate Influence Of Whole Body Vibration On Proprioceptive Precision, Sean Madill

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

As our bodies are exposed to whole-body vibration inertial and strain sensitive sensory receptors throughout our body are activated. The information relayed from these receptors to the central nervous system and brain is used to analyze our environment and coordinate movement. The aim of this study was to investigate whether extended duration whole-body vibration influences sensory adaptation and coordinated movement, specifically our joint position acuity immediately following vibration exposure. Twenty-five adults completed a between ankle joint matching task before and immediately following a 20-minute whole-body vibration session and a control session of 20 minutes of standing near, but not on …

Control Of Redundant Pointing Movements Involving The Wrist And Forearm, Garrett R. Dorman, Kevin C. Davis, Allan W. Peaden, Steven K. Charles Jun 2018

Control Of Redundant Pointing Movements Involving The Wrist And Forearm, Garrett R. Dorman, Kevin C. Davis, Allan W. Peaden, Steven K. Charles

Faculty Publications

The musculoskeletal system can move in more ways than are strictly necessary, allowing many tasks to be accomplished with a variety of limb configurations. Why some configurations are preferred has been a focus of motor control research, but most studies have focused on shoulder-elbow or whole-arm movements. This study focuses on movements involving forearm pronation-supination (PS), wrist flexion-extension (FE), and wrist radial-ulnar deviation (RUD), and elucidates how these three degrees of freedom (DOF) combine to perform the common task of pointing, which only requires two DOF. Although pointing is more sensitive to FE and RUD than to PS and could …

Onward And Upward: Optimizing Motor Performance, Lee-Kuen Chua, Gabriele Wulf, Rebecca Lewthwaite May 2018

Onward And Upward: Optimizing Motor Performance, Lee-Kuen Chua, Gabriele Wulf, Rebecca Lewthwaite

Kinesiology and Nutrition Sciences Faculty Publications

In the OPTIMAL theory of motor learning (Wulf & Lewthwaite, 2016), three factors are postulated to facilitate motor performance and learning: Enhanced expectancies (EE) for performance, autonomy support (AS), and an external focus (EF) of attention. We examined whether EE, AS, and EF would have immediate performance benefits and whether implementing these factors consecutively would lead to incremental performance increases. Participants were assigned to the optimized or control groups and performed a maximal jump. After the first trial block (baseline), optimized group participants were provided different conditions on each of the following 3 blocks: (a) Positive social-comparative feedback (EE); (b) …
